On behalf of all of us at Catholic Charities of Boston, thank you for joining the Catholic Charities Rodman Ride team.

As you work hard to train and fundraise, it is important to remember that your success will stretch far beyond the finish line. Your Ride efforts will continue to have a major impact over the course of the year, making a tangible difference in the lives of the neediest within our communities across Eastern Massachusetts. The money you raise will directly aid local youth of all faiths through our child and youth programs, such as T.E.A.M. (Together Engaging Adolescents through Mentoring) and Youth Tutoring Youth (YTY) in South Boston, Sunset Point Camp in Hull, the Teen Center at St. Peter's in Dorchester, Brigid's Crossing in Lowell, child care, and more.

We are grateful to have you on Team Catholic Charities, raising funds and awareness for our at-risk youth. We wish you the best and look forward to supporting you as you continue on your Ride journey.

Best,

Deborah Kincade Rambo, LICSW

President, Catholic Charities of Boston

ABOUT THE RIDE

Ride Day

HelmetRoadworthy bikeChange of clothes for after the Ride

100 miles - 7:00 a.m.50 miles - 9:00 a.m.25 miles - rolling start begins at 10:15 a.m.

On Saturday, September 23, over 1,500 riders will participate in 25, 50 or 100 mile non-competitive cycling tours throughout southeastern Massachusetts.

A festival atmosphere infuses the day, and all riders are greeted with a cookout, music and fun when they return from their Ride.

Most importantly, every dollar raised on behalf of Catholic Charities Boston goes directly to the youth we serve. The Ride covers 100% of the expenses for the event, and on top of that, they provide a 3% match to Catholic Charities once we reach our organizational goal.

OUR PARTNERSHIP

We’ve been a proud partner of the Rodman Ride for Kids for many years and have seen firsthand how this event brings together not only Riders, but volunteers, affiliated organizations, and supporters.

This year, our Ride teams will work collaboratively to raise over $200,000 in support of our Catholic Charities at-risk youth programs. In the City of Boston and across Eastern Massachusetts, youth are faced with gang violence, drugs and many complex issues. At Catholic Charities, we help young people address these issues through our many youth programs:

South Boston T.E.A.M. (Together Engaging Adolescents through Mentoring)Sunset Point Camp in HullThe Teen Center at St. Peter’s in DorchesterYouth Tutoring Youth (YTY)Child Care programs across Eastern MassachusettsBrigid's Crossing in Lowell

The funds you raise over the course of the following weeks and months, will directly aid local youth active in these programs; if you have joined a regional-specific team, funds you raise will be used to support the programs in that region. Your efforts will help us better support the health, wellness, productivity, leadership development, and education of our children and teens.

How to Customize Your Letter

Dear XXXX,

This September, I will be riding in the 27th annual Rodman Ride for Kids. While I am personally excited to participate in this event, I am riding for a reason greater than my love of the sport. I have chosen to Ride on behalf of the thousands of at-risk youth, of all faiths, supported by Catholic Charities of Boston.

My goal is to raise $X,XXX to support the programs and services offered to at-risk youth throughout the 144 cities and towns across Eastern Massachusetts served by Catholic Charities. The funding provides the necessary resources to:

• Provide nearly 450 under resourced youth a week of summer camp• Enable Catholic Charities to offer mentoring to more than 200 teens at their Teen Center in

Dorchester• Subsidize the cost of childcare for 1,100 infants, toddlers, and preschoolers at our seven child care

centers throughout eastern Massachusetts

These are just some of the ways Catholic Charities will be able to use the $X,XXX I am planning to raise. Today, I ask for your support with a gift of $X,XXX. As an additional incentive, the Rodman Ride not only underwrites the entire event, but also provides a 3% match on every dollar I raise.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

John Smith

Your personal letter/email should include:

• Your personal goal—aim high!• Why your are riding—your personal connection• Some facts about Catholic Charities and the specific program/region you are

connected to• Ask for a specific amount and ask everyone you know—the worst they can say is no• Say “thank you”—whether someone says “yes” or “no”; either acknowledge their

generosity and support, or you can leave the door open for next year

Remember to ask everyone you know. Friends, family, holiday card mailing lists, your doctor’s office - and ask them to pay it forward for you.

ABOUT THE TEEN CENTER AT ST. PETER'S

Your fundraising efforts could help The Teen Center:

• Provide nutritious snacks or a hot dinner for students• Employ a Counselor-in-Training for the summer• Enable us to run three 15-passenger vans to safely

bring teens to and from the Teen Center and home everyday

The positive impact of the St. Peter Teen Center is evident in its outcomes for these children and young adults socially, personally and academically. The teen members have low pregnancy rates, no gang involvement, less than one percent have been arrested, and none have been killed. These results are incredible when we see that Dorchester has Boston’s highest juvenile arrest rate and violent crime rate. The Teen Center’s first focus is academics with a strong after-school tutoring program provided for its members.

LOCATION278 Bowdoin StreetDorchester, MA

www.ccab.org/teencenter

Catholic Charities’ Teen Center at St. Peter serves as a safe haven for adolescents living in Dorchester’s most troubled areas—the Bowdoin Street / Geneva Avenue neighborhood—during after school hours and throughout the summer months.

The Teen Center’s staff, programs, and activities aim to increase teens’ self-esteem while providing the tools needed for academic and personal growth, as well as their success in the community. The Teen Center focuses on adolescents who have been disproportionately exposed to and involved in teen violence in Dorchester. Through critical outreach efforts and extensive, well-structured programming, the Teen Center has been successful in helping to interrupt the rapidly expanding cycle of violence. Each young person who comes through the door receives personal attention, and the tutoring and mentoring they need to succeed, as well as outreach to their families to help in resolving conflicts and in obtaining additional services that may be needed.

ABOUT SUNSET POINT CAMP

Your fundraising efforts could help Sunset Point Camp:

• Provide nutritious snacks or a hot dinner for campers• Employ a Counselor for the summer• Ensure all campers have bathing suits, socks, and

other necessities for their week of fun

Many Sunset Point campers live with the harsh realities of poverty, violence, homelessness, and a host of other challenges, so the opportunity to spend a week at summer camp allows them the chance to relax, learn new skills, build personal confidence and enjoy a vacation free from the worries of everyday life. Providing parents with options like Sunset Point Camp for their children during out of school times can literally be life-saving. We measure the impact of the camp based on the happiness it brings these campers every summer.

LOCATION2 Tenth StreetHull, MA

www.ccab.org/sunset

For nearly 100 years, Sunset Point Camp has provided a dream vacation at the seashore to over 40,000 low-income, at-risk children aged 6-13 from Greater Boston without regard for their race, nationality, or religious affiliation.

Nearly 450 city-based boys and girls travel to Hull, Massachusetts each summer for a one or two week overnight camp experience letting them enjoy the fresh air, learn new talents, receive academic summer support and simply have fun. Campers enjoy swimming, kayaking, paddle boats, arts and crafts, drama and other recreational activities. In addition, they are involved in a variety of programs designed around life-building skills promoting teamwork, sportsmanship, and good health, while cultivating a sense of leadership, self-discipline and self-esteem. For a registration fee of just $25 per camper, a child receives transportation to from camp, three meals a day and snacks, overnight accommodation in the boys or girls bunkhouse, a full spectrum of recreational activities, and bus transportation during the week to Nantasket Beach and other locations.

ABOUT YOUTH TUTORING YOUTH

Your fundraising efforts could help YTY:

• Purchase new supplies and academically enriching activities for after-school sessions

• Employ a Teen Leader• Expose youth to cultural experiences

LOCATION275 West BroadwaySouth Boston, MA

www.ccab.org/YTY

Youth Tutoring Youth (YTY) provides a free after-school program to South Boston students.

Teen Leaders ages 15 to 18 help younger students in grades 3 through 5 with tutoring, homework help, mentoring, exercise, reading, writing, math and confidence in decision making. The program provides a safe place for youth to spend after school hours while instilling a sense of belonging and fostering a heightened level of academic achievement. They participate in monthly field trips and activities like ice skating, museum visiting, and bowling.

100% of YTY parents surveyed felt that their children had improved their academic abilities in math, reading, and writing. YTY has a 1:3 student to teacher ratio and a maximum of 20 students in each class. Through individual attention, small class size, and a balance of structure and choice, parents see a positive change in social skills and ability to resist negative peer pressure.
