4. These are they whose hearts were riven, / Sore with woe and anguish tried, Who in pray’r full oft have striven / With the God they glorified; Now, their painful conflict o’er, / God has bid them weep no more.

5. These, like priests, have watched and waited, / Off’ring up to Christ their will; Soul and body consecrated, / Day and night to serve Him still: Now in God’s most holy place / Blest they stand before His face.

OTESNT HE PAPACY of Francis has been marked by a certain

amount of simplicity, and therein lies the inspiration for this book of hymns. Its contents could not be more

straightforward:

(1) More than two hundred traditional hymns(2) The complete Kyriale and six settings of the Credo

Since these hymns were excerpted from the Vatican II Hymnal, that book’s numbering system has been kept. However, more than forty additional hymns have been added, and many of these came from the St. Edmund Campion Hymnal.

No system of hymn classification could meet with everyone’s approval because hymns are often appropriate for more than one season. For example, “At the LAmb’s high FeAst” could be used outside of Eastertide. Similarly, “Lo! he Comes With CLouds desCending” could be used outside of Advent. Our catalogue system provides suggestions only, designed for inexperienced choirmasters lacking extensive knowledge of hymnody.

Finally, it must be remembered that the hymn tunes chosen are mere possibilities. For example, the organist could play the more familiar version of “At the Cross her stAtion Keeping” and the congregation would have no problem following along.

Many hymnals provide an excessive amount of hymns for Advent and Christmas (which are very brief seasons), but give only a meager amount for Ordinary Time (which is a very long season).

Page 4: Pope Francis Hymn Book - Catholic Liturgy Blog: Views …. Whereas the Pope Francis Hymn Book uses a medium quality binding (allowing for extremely low pricing) the Jogues Missal uses

Furthermore, they frequently ignore feasts like the Baptism of the Lord. The user can judge how successful we were in providing a remedy for this situation.

The “simplicity” of this book extends even to the organ accom-paniments, which normally provide only one harmonization—whereas the Campion Hymnal, for example, gave numerous key transpositions and alternate versions.

Hymnal editors must often make hard choices. For example, “We three Kings” is wildly popular in the United States, but (in our judgment) has little to offer from the point of view of melody, poetry, or theological depth. Moreover, in the Ordinary Form, the Epiphany is an extremely short season, and the hymns we provide are superb: splendid melodies, strong theology, and inspired poetry. Therefore, our omission of “We three Kings” was a conscious decision, not an error, which we hope will be respected, though others might have chosen a different path.

Our publication would not have been possible without 250 Hymns in the Public Domain (ICEL, 1981).

A different book—the St. Isaac Jogues Hymnal—is currently in production and will contain more than 1,000 hymns. Whereas the Pope Francis Hymn Book is “simple” and straightforward, this new production has a different purpose and scope. It is being created by a coalition of “regular” priests and musicians freely sharing their knowledge via the internet. To join these efforts, please visit: C C WAt e r s h e d.o r g/ j o g u e s
