The role of the Alzheimer’s Association as

a catalyst for breakthrough dementia research

is exemplified by our commitment to

funding world-class research and providing

knowledge-sharing forums for leading

dementia researchers around the globe.

Since 1982, the Alzheimer’s Association has invested over

$350 million in more than 2,300 scientific investigations.

Through the International Research Grant Program, the

Alzheimer’s Association is the world’s largest nonprofit funder

of Alzheimer’s research. Currently, the Association’s active

investments of over $80 million are enabling more than 350

investigations in twenty-one countries. The Alzheimer’s

Association was recently recognized as global leader in

Alzheimer’s research. Thomson Reuters Web of Science

measures the Association as having the highest Alzheimer’s

research impact of all nonprofits globally and the third-

highest impact overall, behind only the United States and

Chinese governments.

Research on Alzheimer’s disease prevention and prevalence

took center stage at the Alzheimer’s Association International

Conference‰ (AAIC‰), held July 19-23, 2015 in Washington,

D.C. The world’s largest gathering of Alzheimer’s and dementia

professionals, AAIC drew more than 4,500 researchers, physi-

cians, and other health care professionals from 68 countries.

Participants had hundreds of sessions from which to choose

over the five-day conference, including nearly 500 oral presen-

tations and more than 1,200 poster presentations, plus two full

days of pre-conference sessions and educational workshops.

AAIC shined a spotlight on many new research findings during

its five days of presentations, meetings and informal discus-

sion. Topics included the latest results from clinical trials of

potential new therapeutic agents, gender-based differences

in Alzheimer’s risk and prevalence, the effects of education

on dementia risk and multi-pronged approaches to treatment

including medications as well as lifestyle changes.

The 2016 Alzheimer’s Association International Conference‰

(AAIC‰) will be held July 24-28, 2016 in Toronto, Canada.

The latest Alzheimer’s Association Research Roundtable

(AARR) meeting took place in Washington, D.C. in April 2015.

The AARR is unique in that it brings together scientists from

the pharmaceutical industry, academia, the National Institutes

of Health, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the European

Medicines Agency and the Alzheimer’s Association to discuss

the latest topics in Alzheimer’s research. The Spring 2015

meeting focused on neuroinflammation as a central player

in the development of Alzheimer’s disease and as a potential

target for therapy. Although neuroinflammation has been

recognized as a characteristic feature of Alzheimer’s disease,

it is still debated as to whether interventions that increase

versus decrease the brain’s immune response may be most

effective in treating the disease. The AARR provided an

opportunity for experts to examine what is currently known,

where research gaps need to be filled, potential opportunities

for novel therapeutics, and barriers and challenges to the

clinical development of Alzheimer’s treatments. The next

AARR meeting is set to take place in October 2015.

The Alzheimer‘s Association leads the World-Wide

Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (WW-ADNI),

which unites international investigators in a common effort

to help predict and monitor the onset and progression of

Alzheimer’s disease; establish globally recognized standards to

identify and diagnose Alzheimer’s disease; document changes

in thinking, reasoning and memory linked to physical changes

in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s; and share data across

the international Alzheimer’s research community. The overall

goals of WW-ADNI are to help define the rate of progression

of Alzheimer’s disease from the earliest stages, possibly even

before an individual is experiencing the clinical symptoms of

Alzheimer’s, and to develop improved methods for identifying

the appropriate individuals to participate in clinical trials.

WW-ADNI also aims to standardize the methods used for

brain imaging (including PET and MRI) and gathering and

testing biological fluid samples (such as cerebrospinal fluid,

blood, and plasma) so data can be compared globally. ADNI is

unique in that most of the clinical, neuropsychological, imaging

and biological data is quickly made freely available to the

scientific community so researchers can use the information

in designing and evaluating their own research. Over the past

decade, ADNI data have been used in over 600 publications

that have spanned numerous scientific areas and have influ-

enced the field in dramatic ways. Participants in WW-ADNI

include sites in North America, Europe, Australia, Japan,

Taiwan, Korea, China, and Argentina. Efforts are also under

way in Brazil and India.

Alzheimer’s & Dementia‰: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s

Association draws readers from around the globe. The peer-

reviewed, monthly journal ranks third of nearly 200 journals

in its category of clinical neurology, according to Thomson

Reuters, a recognized authority in journal evaluation.

Addressing challenges facing researchers, clinicians and

health policymakers alike, the journal offers a forum for

new ideas across diverse areas of Alzheimer’s and dementia

research. Building upon the success of the flagship journal,

two companion open-access journals were recently launched.

In March 2015, Alzheimer’s & Dementia: Diagnosis, Assessment

& Monitoring was released, followed by Alzheimer’s &

Dementia: Translational Research & Clinical Interventions in

June 2015. The online-only, open-access format allows for

faster publication of articles and the articles are available with-

out a subscription, allowing everyone, world-wide to access.

The Alzheimer’s Association International Society to

Advance Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment (ISTAART) is

a scientific society for researchers and practitioners interested

in research on Alzheimer’s and other dementias. The mission

of ISTAART is to bring together scientists and clinicians from

a broad range of fields to accelerate scientific progress and

bring us closer to our vision of a world without Alzheimer’s.

As of September 2015, ISTAART had more than 3,000 members

representing 68 countries. ISTAART provides a forum for

the sharing of cutting edge research advances from diverse

disciplines. The society welcomes members from fields

including biochemistry, genetics, geriatrics, molecular and cell

biology, neurology, neuroscience, pathology, pharmacology,

psychiatry, psychology, radiology and the social sciences. This

unique professional society offers networking opportunities

that facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations that are laying

the groundwork for accelerating advances in the field.

Alzheimer’s Association TrialMatch‰ is a free, easy-to-use

clinical studies matching service that increases the number

of people participating in clinical research. The Alzheimer’s

Association created TrialMatch because recruiting and

retaining participants for clinical studies is one of the

greatest obstacles to developing Alzheimer’s diagnostics and

treatments. The immediate need for advances in diagnosis,

treatment and prevention has led to an unprecedented call

for clinical study participants.

TrialMatch aims to accelerate the recruitment of study partici-

pants by pairing volunteers with clinical studies in their area.

This increases the speed with which new diagnostics and

treatments can be tested and validated as safe and effective,

which in turn speeds the rate with which they are brought to

market and can help those who need them most. Currently,

TrialMatch houses over 260 studies occurring at over 1000

sites across the country. With the help of our volunteer

study participants, TrialMatch is accelerating the pace of

clinical research into the causes and possible treatments of

Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

This is a dedication to a woman of strength, a woman of courage, a woman who lived her life with

compassion. This woman was my mother, Eleanor Maggio Vivona. She fought Alzheimer’s along with

cancer with such dignity until the end, March 17th, 2015. Mom, you are missed every day and heaven

is lucky to have you there. I will continue to support the Alzheimer’s Association to fund research for a

cure to this disease. We love you and Daddy and know that you are both in our hearts always.

THE NEW YORK YANKEES support the Alzheimer’s Association during Alzheimer’s Brain & Awareness Month at Yankee Stadium

The New York Yankees continued their support of the Alzheimer’s

Association on June 22, 2015 during Alzheimer’s Brain & Awareness

Month at Yankee Stadium. The campaign was highly successful

this past season in spreading the word of Alzheimer’s Awareness

throughout Major League Baseball with a total of ten teams working

with the national office to run awareness initiatives of their own.

In addition to the efforts of Alzheimer’s Association chapters, a total

of 16 MLB clubs worked with the Association to raise awareness.

The Alzheimer’s Association is so grateful for the support and lead-

ership of the New York Yankees. The June 22nd on-field ceremony

featured a PSA by members of the New York Yankees. New York

Yankees Manager, Joe Girardi, joined Princess Yasmin Aga Khan,

Founder and General Chair of the Alzheimer’s Association Rita

Hayworth Gala, Harry Johns, President and CEO of the Alzheimer’s

Association, Dr. Paul Greengard, Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s

Research, and James L. Nederlander, President of The Nederlander

Organization on the field.
