AFRICAN ELEPHANTS COULD BE EXTINCT
IN 15 YEARS
The population – currently 600,000 – is diminishing by 38,000 each year.
These figures, calculated using the annual number of illegal tusk seizures, significantly exceed elephant birth rates meaning the species could face extinction entirely within 15 years, says Samuel Wasser of the Scientific American Journal.
LIFE TO SHARE
33 The Telegraph
The worldwide illegal trade in
wildlife is valued at tens of billions
of American dollars (£12.5billion) and is believed
to have the same significance now as the blood-diamond trade
during the peak of the African civil wars.
In 2006, 11 metric tonnes of illegal ivory were seized from ships bound for Taiwan and Japan.
The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) says immediate action needs to be taken. The group calls for EU and CITES members (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) to stop supporting legal ivory sales. Instead, they urge members to back Kenya’s proposal to extend the current “resting period” on elephant and ivory sales from nine to 20 years at the next CITES meeting in March 2010.
This alarming level of illegal hunting could drive the African elephant to extinction across much of Africa in just 15 years,” said Robbie Marsland, director of IFAW UK.
He added: “Most people will be shocked to hear that, 20 years on from a ban on international ivory trade, elephants in Africa are still threatened by commercial poaching. The ivory trade must be banned once again, and comprehensively, if we want to prevent the extinction of elephants.
“Sadly, the truth is that ivory trade anywhere is a threat to elephants everywhere.”
Chad’s Zakouma National Park had 3,885 elephants in 2005 but by 2009 the figure had plummeted to just 617. At least 11 rangers were killed by poachers there over the same period.
Elephants are not alone in the illegal trafficking of wildlife parts. In the last few years, 55,000 reptile skins from India, 19,000 big-eye thresher shark fins in Ecuador and 23 metric tonnes of pangolin in Asia have all been seized.
African elephants could be extinct within 15 years because of the illegal ivory trade, conservation experts have warned.

1 LETTERMANIA
It seems hardly a week goes by lately without some interesting new development in online typography. For years there has been a constant grumble from many that the web needs more typefaces available to designers to create great online typography, and there’s been a consistent, and entirely correct (but perhaps rather hardline) response from others that great typography doesn’t come from having lots of typefaces. Perhaps you can tell from that which side I come down on, and yes, it is rather hardline, and I freely and happily admit that as a response to the problem it rather misses the point.
You can, of course, create great typography using only one or two typefaces for your entire working career as a designer. I’ve met a few designers who seem to want to do just that, and indeed, I heard a story of a creative director so obsessed with Bembo that he wouldn’t allow any other face to be used on anything, so that none of the designers who worked with him could ever bear
INTRODUCTIONto use it ever again. Most of us, like those very designers, would quite reasonably get bored to death with using the same faces all the time. No matter how beautiful, how perfect, how utterly balanced the typeface was, you can have too much of a good thing, eventually - and if the faces you have available are, shall we say, of mixed quality, then you can feel rather stifled, rather quickly.
The whole push to develop practical ways using typefaces online is inevitable given how many applications are now moving into ‘the cloud’. We’ve word processors and photo editing applications online now, and it’ll only be a matter of time before professional creative tools go online too. We want to be able to access our documents from anywhere, and for them to use the same faces as we created them with, and for these documents, the web core fonts aren’t going to do the job.
With the online subscription model, there is a cautionary note to keep in mind - you don’t have control over what’s available. As Kindle users who thought they’d bought Orwell’s 1984 recently found out, if your service provider doesn’t want you to have it anymore, you have no say in the matter. At least if you have the font file on your own machine or your own server, you can keep using it even if the company you bought it from no longer wants to sell it. We’ll no doubt see both honourable and dis-honourable business practices, some scandals, some interesting legal actions, and probably new primary legislation on the matter, but until then, as ever, caveat emptor.

ABOUT USThe Pioneer Golf Club is the established private golf club and an
important part of the social fabric in the Barrie area.
The Club originated as a nine-hole layout on the grounds now
known as Willow Deer Park. In the late 1960’s, the club purchased
200 acres of land in Vespra Township (now Springwater) and in
1970 the Pioneer Golf Club officially moved to its current home on
the north-eastern edge of Barrie.
The beautiful full-service Clubhouse enjoys spectacular sweeping
views of the golf course complete with all the amenities expected
at a private club. Meeting and banquet facilities are available
to members and non-members. We are a country club that is
committed to quality golf and continuous improvement while
providing members an extensive recreational and social experience
in a friendly and comfortable environment.
OVERVIEWFull of history (since 1929) the course today has a mature
landscape which is both challenging and forgiving. It's only
minutes from the city but you feel away from it all. Not to mention
a clubhouse that befits a private club. It's no wonder the Pioneer
Golf Club is voted best Public Golf Course time and time again.
The relatively level from hole to hole makes power carts optional
and many opt to enjoy the tradition of the game by walking.
Carved out of the pristine forests of the Willow Beach Land, the
18-hole par-72 course is a favourite among both casual golfers
and regulars. However you choose to get around, your time on
our course will be time well spent.
