We did it!
Dear Pencil Peeps,
As I write this, we have only 2 days left of what I believe is the most
ambitious chapter event, in our 25 years of existence! The words I re-
ceived from long-time, well established San Diego artists, and beyond:
outstanding, well thought out, a fine balance of what we artists can
achieve in the medium of Colored Pencil!
Katherine Miller kept our “Sitter’s Calendar”- a challenge within it-
self. A huge “Thank You” to all sitters, you went above and beyond!!
Did you notice our 2 “Tools of the Trade” showcases? I must thank
Katherine for what turned out to be a “Showcase” within our showcase
of art, in Gallery 21. Our visitors were stunned at the tools we use.
Our Spanish Village Art Center “Patio Event” and the “Make & Take”
projects – Teresa and Susan who said let’s do “eye” masks - a timely
Halloween project. Manning our 2-Day “Patio Event” tables were: Kathy Lally, Susan Salazar, Teresa Rodriquez-Ross, Lois Adler-
Roussell, Joanne VanKolken, Sundee Ziegler, and yours truly.
My 2 year old “pie-in-the sky” idea of securing Gallery 21 for a month would not have happened without your supportive and hard-working
Board - Lois Adler-Roussell, Connie Grace, Teresa Rodriguez-Ross,
Katherine Miller, Lori Sutherland, Sharon Meng, Susan Salazar, Greg Holtz, “Blade”, Vicky Delong. The hard work of these people, is how
your 25th Anniversary Exhibition happened - each of these dedicated
artists provided a vital element to our success. We need to thank our newest members - Renato Salazar, Trish Bonapace, & Sundee Ziegler .
Did I leave anyone out?
I would be in great remiss if I do not mention the passing of our suppor-tive, long-time, award winning, multi-media artist, and great friend -
Karen Rhiner - she never allowed any “grass to grow under her feet”.
Let us end 2015 with our Annual Holiday
Potluck, and a few surprises too.
Cheers,
Bobbie

I am sure you have all heard that our dear friend and fellow pencil pusher Karen Rhiner has passed. Here are a few words shared by members about this great lady. I also have included some of her “quirky” works. Karen you are missed already!!
“Karen was the person who welcomed me to our CPSA group when I first joined and she remained my CPSA buddy until she could no longer attend our meetings. She was a gifted and creative artist, a warm friend, and a strong woman who handled her illness with grace, courage and humor. I will miss her.” Sharon Meng
“Karen was so good to me. She had me to her house and took the time to show me how to draw glassless drawings and always shared what she could to help other artists grow. I will never forget what a wonderful person she was.” Lois Adler Roussell
“In all the years I have known Karen she always encouraged me and taught me to push forward on my work. she said think about it from a different perspective, break the rules, have fun! Even as I saw her less ,she would visit my studio and send me an email with encouraging words and thoughts about what I was working on. I appreciated her excite-ment for new ideas, experimentation and success for a new concept! Thank you Karen. I will miss your smile.” Deb Gargula
“Karen, a lover of art and words. Always a warm heart and cheery disposition, eager to compliment others on their art. She always sent me an email declaring that I was the best newsletter editor yet, coming from her that was a real compliment and boost! I felt she was very humble about her own work. Such an innovator, Karen was doing art for the pure pleasure of expression and experimentation. Now here is an artist I can look up to and do. Kudos Karen!! You are missed and treasured.” Blade
I loved her demos, especially pulling words out of a paper bag for ideas! Karen had a bag or jar and she would put names of objects on strips of paper to place in bag, like bird, hand, bed. The game was to sketch out as many ideas as pos-sible using these words to create art. Carolyn Kenny
Karen strongly supported our members needs; suggestions on paper sources, inviting members to her studio, giving step by step instructions on how to prop-erly finish off your "frame-less” artwork on cradle boards. Bobbie Bradford

WHEN IS YOUR ART PROJECT DONE?
“Art is never finished, only abandoned.” Leonardo da Vinci
I do not know about you, but I sometimes do not know when my piece is complete. I want it to be done, I feel excited and I am tired of working on it… Let it be done!! I know when my house is completely clean. I know when my dinner is done cooking, so what is it with this art stuff??
Perhaps the creative expression is beyond my hands and mind. It does not seem to matter if it is photo realistic or abstract , that end part is a real call to grow.
I read that for some, art is done when it leaves the studio. For me, once the piece is framed it is done… wrong. Once the piece is professionally photographed it is done… wrong. I have been known to work on something after it is back from the framer and the photographer. Yes, I have taken it out of the frame and have worked on it yet again. The truth is, I could not see what was needed until it was framed and hanging. I often leave my so called finished pieces hanging around at home for at least two or so weeks before framing. It does not matter, for me I must do what I must do to feel complete at any cost.
There does come a time when my inner self says that is it! I am complete with this project. It does help, however, that I attend a weekly art group with other opinionated artists. Also invaluable to me, is belonging to The Colored Pencil Society of America and having the input of other artists using the same medium.
It is comforting to know I am not alone in my challenge. Be happy, Blade♥
