Class 2.8 of the PDC++ + ¿How do we evaluate our designs? Design is a continuous process, so being able to see whether a project is moving in the right direction & accurately evaluating progress, being able & ready to re-direct resources & efforts in order to respond creatively to surrounding co-designs & changing circumstances ... is an essential part of the whole. In this class we look at how to develop these crucial skills & explore some of the tools we use for creating flexibly with complex & ever- changing Life forces.

Class 2.8 of the PDC+++¿How do we evaluate our designs?Design is a continuous process, so being able to see whether a project is moving in the right direction & accurately evaluating progress, being able & ready to re-direct resources & efforts in order to respond creatively to surrounding co-designs & changing circumstances ... is an essential part of the whole.

In this class we look at how to develop these crucial skills & explore some of the tools we use for creating flexibly with complex & ever-changing Life forces.

¿How do we evaluate our designs?

Is it Sustainable?Are we closer to the Vision?Does it express who I am?Does it meet the Objectives?Does it meet the Criteria?

Why is evaluation even harder than observation?

Page 4: PDC+++ Module 2 Class 8

How do you evaluate the results? Have we achieved the objectives? Have we fulfilled the criteria? Does it express who / what I want to

be? It gets me closer or further away of

my vision? (Design motivation) This is why it is a good idea to have

your vision, objectives and criteria very clear from the beginning

Sustainable development is that which satisfies the needs of the present without affecting the capacity of future generations to satisfy their

needs.

It has two key concepts:a) the concept of "needs", in particular the basic needs of the world's poor, to which we

have to give priority &

b) The idea of “limits" imposed by the state of the technology & social organization over the

capacity of the environment

to satisfy the needs of the present & the future.

•How will my design affect future generations?•Am I satisfying needs or wants?•Am I respecting limits?

Page 7: PDC+++ Module 2 Class 8

4. Bill Mollison, Designers' Manual

A system is sustainable

when it creates / stores

more energy / matter in its lifetime

than that which it needs

to create & maintain it.

A sustainable system produces all the energy & resource it needs for its maintenance & growth. What is left over is "the yield".

•How much energy / resource did this design cost?•How much is my system really producing ?

Sustainable?

Think how it will affect the next 7

generations(200 yrs)

Deep Green Resistance, 2011DeepGreenResistance.org

Those who come after, who inherit whatever's left of the world once this culture has been stopped - whether through peak oil, economic collapse, ecological collapse, or the efforts of brave women & men resisting in alliance with the natural world - are going to judge us by the health of the landbase, by what we leave behind.

They're not going to care how you or I lived our lives. They're not going to care how hard we tried. They're not going to care whether we were nice people. They're not going to care whether we were nonviolent or violent. They're not going to care whether we grieved the murder of the planet. They're not going to care whether we were enlightened or not. They're not going to care what sort of excuses we had to not act (eg. "I'm too stressed to think about it, " or "It's too big & scary, " or "I'm too busy, " or "But those in power will kill us if we effectively act against them," or "If we fight back, we run the risk of becoming like they are," or "But I recycled," or any of a thousand other excuses we've all heard too many times).

They're not going to care how simply we lived. They're not going to care how pure we were in thought or action. They're not going to care if we became the change we wished to see. They're not going to care whether we had "compassion" for the CEOs & politicians running this deathly economy.

They're going to care whether they can breathe the air & drink the water.

We can fantasize all we want about some great turning, but if the people (including the nonhuman people) can't breathe, it doesn't matter.

Robert Fritz

The Path of creativity

feet on ground!

The Big VisionThere is a profound difference between problem solving and

creating.

Problem solving is taking action to have something go away-

the problem.

Creating is taking action to have

something come into being – the creation.

Page 15: PDC+++ Module 2 Class 8

The Problem

Action to solve the problem

Less intensity in the problem

Less action to solve the problem

The problem remains

A necessary approach when faced with an

emergency

That helps us to gain time

Time to focus on what we want to create

Page 16: PDC+++ Module 2 Class 8

thereforeIt is very important

you have your vision as clear as possible

¿Who are you?

Be creative and proactive! here its particularly important: You are your own masterpiece!

(if you need divine approval for this freedom read "Conversations with God")

Philosophy is asking that since the dawn of time

A good example of a question in which it is useful to note our consumerist patterns (there are many people 'in search' of themselves)

Without a name; an unseen faceand knowing not your time nor placeTomorrow’s Child, though yet unborn,I met you first last Tuesday morn.

A wise friend introduced us two,and through his sobering point of viewI saw a day that you would see;a day for you, but not for me

Knowing you has changed my thinking,for I never had an inklingThat perhaps the things I domight someday, somehow, threaten you

Tomorrow’s Child, my daughter-sonI’m afraid I’ve just begunTo think of you and of your good,Though always having known I should.

Begin I will to weigh the costof what I squander; what is lostIf ever I forget that youwill someday come to live here too.
