Key Selling Proposition• After having participated in this 2-day

offering, teachers will have gained the foundational knowledge of what the CCSS for ELA is all about and the implications to their teaching. They will also have learned concrete strategies which help them take action right away in their classrooms to implement CCSS.

• Sally Hampton (one of the authors of ELA CCSS, and an America’s Choice Senior Fellow) was involved in the development of these workshops

Target Audience for this Workshop

• Titles: Teachers, Literacy or Reading Coaches, Reading Specialists• The ideal customer will have little background knowledge of the CCSS. If they are purchasing a

program-specific workshop, they should know these workshops are focused on understanding the organization of the CCSS and ways the program addresses the standards.

• Many states are offering some training on CC either through their DOE or their state-sanctioned PD agency. The quantity and quality of this training can vary widely, with some being limited to just 1 or 2 hours. Some district leaders may be led into thinking that such training is sufficient.

Probing Questions:How much training in CCSS ELA have your teachers received thus far?

If “none,” then this workshop will be perfect for them!If “some” or “a lot,” probe about how many hours have been devoted to training and what topics

have been covered. Signs of sufficient foundational training:

Teachers have completed at least 6 hours of trainingTeachers are able to describe the following terms and explain their role in the CCSS ELA

Standards: Anchor Standards, CCSS ELA Strands, Text Complexity, College and Career Readiness

If your customer’s answers indicate that teachers already have a sound foundational knowledge of CCSS ELA, then recommend a more in-depth workshop such as Digging into the Reading Standards, Digging into the Writing Standards, Speaking and Listening and Language Standards, or Performance-based Assessment for ELA.

Are you getting training from the state or the regional PD service agencies? If “yes,” how in-depth is that training? If “no,” how are they managing to provide it in their district?

Capacity Builder + is a new train-the-trainer service which Pearson is now offering specifically for Common Core training. Pearson provides in-depth training to district personnel on the Pearson CCSS workshop(s) of their choice and then licenses our materials to them so that they can train others. The benefits to the district are that CB+ saves them the time of building their own material and the money that would otherwise be required if we were to provide all the training. CB+ has been successfully at districts in Arizona and Delaware. For more information, contact Jeff Ikler or Claire Hollenbeck.

Many administrators have yet to make the connection between Race to the Top’s Teacher Effectiveness initiative and the Common Core. These are not separate issues, but rather closely related aspects of a larger strategy to change teacher practice so as to impact student performance. Ask the question: Does your current evaluation system account for the types of classroom instructional changes that will have to happen as a result of implementing the Common Core? Weave Teacher Compass into the conversation as a means of helping busy administrators to gather and organize data around teacher observations, and provide targeted PD to their teachers as they implement the CCSS. We are making videos for Teacher Compass which are specifically about CCSS.
