1.9 Specific Points for the Use of aSpectra Pump
A Spectra pump must be used fo r the pur-pose only fo r w hich it w a s sold.
If you chang e or w ish to cha ng e the process

Pump criteria include:
1. Com pat ibility w ith the med ium
2. Suita bility fo r seal de sign /mat erial,
especia lly the sha ft seal
3. Resista nce to pressure a nd tem pera ture
of t he medium.
Please note tha t Spectra pumps are progres-
sing cavity pumps an d a s such can g enera te
very high pressure.
A blocka g e o r the cha nce closure o f a valve
in the discharg e line ca n cau se a pressure rise
manifold as high as can be tolerated by the
installation. This can result in t he bursting ofpipes, w hich mu st b e a voided especia lly in
the case of da ngerous media .

During maintenance and repair w ork on the
pump please note the fo llow ing:
1. Ensure tha t t he pump drive can notbe turned on without aut horiza t ion.
2. When opening the pump fo llow
the instructions for ha ndling the
medium (eg. protective clothing,
no smo king et c).
3. Before put t ing t he pump back in to
opera t ion ensure tha t a l l gua rds and
ot her safe ty d evices (eg . drivebeltprotection, coupling protection) are

2 Description
The Spectra pum p is a pro g ressing ca vitypump.
The ma in compon ent s wh ich d ete rmine t he
syste m discovered by Prof essor Ren Moinea u
are a rota t ing part , ca l led the roto r and a sta -
tic part , called the sta to r.
The ro to r is a helical screw w ith a n extrem e-

cent re diame te r w ith round cross-section fo r
1/2-g eo me t ry a nd ellipt ica l cro ss-section fo r

resp. 3 start th rea d a nd is do uble or resp. 1.5th e pitch leng th of th e rot or. This provides
space for the medium betw een the roto r and
sta to r. When t he rot or t urns round inside the
sta to r the m edium mo ves cont inuously from
the inlet t o t he outlet .
The universa l Spectra pump system unifies
many positive characteristics of other pump
types:
Like cent rifug a l pumps Spectra pump s ha ve
no suction or pressure valves, but do have asta ble f low ra te in proport ion to the number
of revolutions.
Like p isto n pu mps Spectra pumps ha ve a
suct ion capabi l i ty of up to 8.5 m vacuum
metric.
Like membrane and peristaltic pumps the
Spectra pump can transport every type of
inhom og eno us, ga seous a nd ab rasive media,
as w ell as those tha t are not of a l iq uid con-
siste ncy or cont a in solids and /or f ibrous ma te -
rial.
Like g ea r pumps and screw pumps the
Spectra pump is capa ble of coping w ith h ig h
me dium visco sit ies.
Li ke p i sto n , m e m b r a n e , g ea r o r s cr ew
pumps the Spectra pump can perform d osing
operations.

The Spectra pump is a progressing cavity pump which can producepressures that may cause the bursting of vessels or pipes.
The power transmission train (shaft, coupling rod, joints, rotor)of the pump may be overloaded thus resulting in damageor breakage.
Also the pump housing parts with their connections may beoverloaded and break. There is a table in Section 4 of theseMaintenance and Operating Instructions showing thepressure resistance of the pump housing parts.
Never run the pump against a closed inlet or outlet valve!
Open valves and vents before starting the pump!
Check the direction of rotation by briefly switching on
