Continuing Education

The mission of Piedmont Community College’s Continuing Education division is to serve as a catalyst for economic

development by providing citizens within the College’s service area with quality programming that identifies and delivers educational programs and training to meet the educational needs for professional and personal development and to provide training for area businesses, industries, and governmental agencies.

Piedmont Community College (PCC) provides educational opportunities that can assist you with improving your earning potential. For example, a high school dropout can expect to earn a starting salary of $23,176 per year, while a person with a high school diploma or equivalency can expect to earn a starting salary of $31,075 per year. A person with training beyond high school, but with less than a two-year college degree can expect to earn a starting salary of $36,381 per year. This shows the importance of continuing one’s education. More education opens up more opportunities. PCC is here to help!

Industry recognized credentials are another important means of increasing employability options. The College recently received a Mobilization grant from the NC Rural Center. This allowed the College to implement the Workforce Certification Academy©. The purpose of the Workforce Certification Academy© is to provide training that leads to an industry recognized credential. PCC has been nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs for its Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedics program. For more information, please see page 14.

Workforce Certification Academy©

PCC has been awarded a Rural Community Mobilization Grant, funded through the NC Rural Center, called The Workforce Certification Academy©. This Continuing Education initiative is designed to help participants obtain local jobs, command better wages and achieve greater career success. The grant provides short-term training specifically designed to prepare individuals for local job opportunities in Advanced Manufacturing.

Certified Production TechnicianThis 174-hour course provides national certification in four areas: Safety Awareness, Manufacturing Processes, Quality Practices and Maintenance Awareness and prepares students to obtain employment in advanced manufacturing facilities. For those who meet eligibility requirements, tuition, books and fees are provided at no charge to the student. Students interested in becoming a Certified Production Technician must report to the Workforce Training Center for this required class:

Train as a BioWork Process TechnicianBioWork is a 128-hour introductory course that brings together the basics of manufacturing technology and the fundamentals of science – two essential

needs for competent, entry-level technicians working in biotechnology, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and chemical manufacturing.

The 16-week hybrid course (part classroom instruction and part online) will meet on

Saturdays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. starting Aug. 25 and ending Dec. 15.

Enrollment is limited to 16 students.

Cost: $176.25 (textbooks estimated cost $120)

Welding Principles and ApplicationsThis 240-hour course includes an introduction to welding, safety in welding, and the basics in Stick, Mig and Tig welding processes and

applications. Requirements to pass the American Welding Society (AWS) certificationexamwillbecovered.Studentswillreceivehands-onwelding

training to learn how to make welds that meet a standard.

The $176.25 cost covers registation and accident insurance (textbook estimated cost $140, students are required to provide some supplies - call for details). Registration Fees for Occupational Extension Courses (unless otherwise denoted) are:

Additional fees may be required for certain courses. There is an $8 student liability fee required for nursing and medical services course. Students also have the option of purchasing Student Accident Insurance at a cost of $1.25. No student shall be permitted to register for a new course with an outstanding balance unless payment ofsuchoutstandingbalancehasbeenguaranteedinwritingbyafinanciallyre-sponsible person or organization. Waivers• Piedmont Community College waives tuition for persons 65 years of age

or older who are NC residents for up to 96 contact hours per semester, with one exception. If a senior citizen enrolls in only one course in a givensemesterandthatcourseexceeds96contacthours,he/sheshallreceive the waiver of the registration fee ($175) for this course only. A senior citizen may receive waivers for both curriculum and occupational extension in a given academic semester. If a senior citizen takes a self-supporting class, (s)he must pay for the class.

• Registrationfeewaiversapplytovolunteerandcounty/municipalfiredepartments, rescue squads, EMS agencies and law enforcement depart-ments as long as the course is applicable to the training needs of the agency/department.

Refund and Course Repeat Policies

RefundsRefunds for Continuing Education courses are made as follows: 100% if requested before course begins or if the course is cancelled, 75% if requested after a course begins but before 10% of the total course meetings. No refund if after this date. In ordertoreceivearefund,thestudentmustofficiallywithdrawfromtheclass.

Course RepeatsState regulations require that students who take an occupational extension course morethantwicewithinafive-yearperiodshallpaytheircostforthecoursebasedonself-supportrates.Forjob-relatedcoursetakenmorethantwiceinafive-yearperiod, students must pay additional charges for the course at the self-support rate,unlessthestudentisrequiredtorepeatthecourseforcertificationorlicenserenewal.
