    Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary

    Welcome to Good Shepherd Chapel

Jesus' instructions on how to be ready for the coming judgment continue in the stories and sayings found in today'sGospel. We are not to be like the greedy rich man in last Sunday's Gospel who planned to store his great harvest inbarns rather than share it. We are, rather, to share our wealth with those in need. The antidote for the anxietybrought on by the coming judgment is to relinquish our possessions and provide for the needs of others. Our treas-ure will be in heaven where it will not wear out or be destroyed.

The other major way to be ready for the coming judgment is to be watchful. In Luke's Gospel, Jesus tells a par-able about watchfulness to begin making this point. We must be like servants waiting for the master's return from awedding banquet, which, even now, can last for a few days in the Middle East. We must be watchful so that even ifthe master comes after midnight, we will be ready for him. This is what the coming of the Son of Man will be like.

Peter asks if this parable is meant for the apostles or for the large crowd that has gathered to listen to Jesus.

Without answering Peter's question, Jesus responds with another parable about servants awaiting the return of theirmaster. It begins with a question: Who, then, is the faithful and prudent steward whom the master will put incharge of his servants to distribute the food allowance at the proper time? This parable adds to the theme of watch-fulness; it explains how to wait and reminds us of the reward for the faithful follower at the heavenly banquet afterthe judgment. If it is addressed to the apostles, then it could also be addressed to leadership in the early Church.Either way, the parables reminds us that we should be found doing our jobs when the master arrives. If we are doingour jobs, our reward will be great. But if we relax, neglect our duties, and begin to act like the greedy rich maneating, drinking, and making merrywe will not have a place in the kingdom. Watchfulness means living in such aconsistently moral and obedient way that we are always ready to give an account to God of how we have lived.Retrieved from http://www.loyola.com/sundayconnection.

    Elysium

    By Joseph MulderingCatholic News Service

NEW YORK (CNS) -- Back in2009, South Africa-born writer-director Neill Blomkmade quite a stir in Hollywood with his low-budget,high-box office science fiction film "District 9."Penned in collaboration with Terri Tatchell, the movused its human characters' interaction with an invadirace of unpleasant-looking, insectlike extraterrestriaa prism through which to examine topics like racismcolonialism, apartheid and xenophobia.Similarly serious aims underlie Blomkamp's latest p

ject (this one scripted solo), the dystopian action pic"Elysium" (TriStar). In crafting what might be termethinking person's shoot-'em-up, Blomkamp envisionsfuture society with numerous -- and uncomfortable --

analogous ties to our own.Though obviously well-intentioned --viewers of faith wisympathize with the narrative's point of view on a range subjects -- the resulting parable is also laden with harshvocabulary and visuals. As such, it's suitable only for stawart grown-ups.Considered aesthetically, moreover, caricature and oversplification weaken the impact of the film's implicit messconcerning such contemporary ills as the plight of immigrants, restricted access to health care and the unequal dsion of resources.Familiar social and environmental blights have run rampin the mid-22nd-century world of "Elysium." So much sthat the Los Angeles in which its protagonist, an industrlaborer named Max (Matt Damon), ekes out his existencone vast ruined slum peopled by demoralized and oppredrones.Since similar conditions prevail across the despoiled glothe rich have retreated to the idyllic satellite from whichmovie takes its title. There they live a life of ease -- andenjoy miraculous medical technology not shared with thunderlings on the home planet. After a workplace accident exposes him to a lethal dose radiation, Max is desperate to reach this orbiting world o

privilege where he knows he can be healed. In exchange for passage there, he agrees to undertake a pous spying mission for underground guerilla leader Spid(Wagner Moura). A master of high-tech innovation and dabbler in all sorts of illegal activities, Spider has the nesary resources to smuggle Max aloft.Since the secrets Max is out to steal have the potential toundermine the whole system protecting Elysium's way olife, his assignment brings him into conflict with one of thabitat's top leaders, ruthless Secretary of Defense Delac(Jodie Foster).Up to her neck in high-stakes political intrigue, Delacoualso has personal reasons for wanting to stop Max. And has just the man for the job: a brutal mercenary calledKruger (Sharlto Copley). As Delacourt's long-standing sagent on Earth, Kruger specializes in keeping the downt

den in line -- by any means necessary.Flashbacks to childhood reveal that the orphaned Max w

befriended and nurtured by a deeply sympathetic nu(Yolanda Abbud L.) -- a figure whose portrayal Catmoviegoers in particular will appreciate. She serves as Max's steady moral compass, though not a guide on whom he always relies. But the lackbalance or shading among other representative chaters means that "Elysium" succeeds more as a sus-penseful adventure than as anything of deeper signcance. The film contains much gory violence, some gruesimages, a few uses of profanity, considerable roughcrude language and several obscene gestures. TheCatholic News Service classification is L -- limitedadult audience, films whose problematic content m

adults would find troubling.Retrieved from http://www.catholicnews.com/
