Tips on how to start paying yourself first

Create a monthly budget. Determine your monthly income vs. expenses.

Set a goal for how much you’d like to pay yourself each pay period. Having a monthly budget will help you to estimate how much you can set aside.

Find out if your employer will allow you to devote your goal amount to a separate bank account through payroll deduction.

Automatic contributions

If you choose a health insurance plan that qualifies for an health savings account, consider funding this account through payroll deduction to save on income taxes and build savings to pay for qualified medical expenses.

3

If your employer offers a retirement benefit, find out if there is an employer match. Most employers will offer some type of a matching contribution only if you contribute.

Invest for the long-run by choosing investments that will deliver long-term growth. Don’t focus on the daily financial market changes.
