Winterpock is the very best place to learn Children just love the reading points earned.

From A, B, C to 295 divided by 3 Winterpock taught us to the best of our ability.

Teachers so swell they teach us well.

So, no wonder people always talk about the lovely Winterpock.

A Silly Story About a Piece of Bubble Gum That Feels Guilty

By: Bella Baumhover , 5th grade

The Lake By: Daryn Duffus , 5th grade

The quite mornings at the lake, no one on the freshly raked beach or on the warm, summer water. The water is smooth, with only small waves coming up to the shore. Little

turtles swimming free, because later they will have to hide in fright when the boats fly by. Minnows speed by when someone steps in the water. Big fish try to seek food near the

sandbars. The docks rock back and forth. Dogs on walks soaking in the summer sun at the lake. By 12 o’clock, there are hundreds of boats speeding by. People in inner tubes racing behind their boats, screaming so loudly. Jet skis zooming past the docks, squirting people with their water. Fishermen in coves trying to catch a decent fish for dinner. Little kids jumping off their boats in a calm area. Families out in the sand bar. Children running down their docks then leaping off. Parents tanning while their kids play in the water. At night the lake is quiet again, no one on the calm water. The water looks like thin ice. No waves at all. The only noise is the parties on the shore. Kids are laughing and playing, while adults are dancing on the beach.

Chapter 1

My Favorite Food

Soft chicken on a bed of noodles.

Steaming hot vegetables and heavenly sauce.

General Tsao’s chicken.

“Oops, ‘scuse me, coming through!” I yelled as I pushed my way through the crowded streets of Beijing, China. The smell of spices and delicious Chow Mein noodles lingered in the air. Street side vendors pulled out beau-tiful colored silks and lovely paper lanterns to tempt eager customers. In a few words- Cho’s Shopping Plaza.

Up ahead was my destination- Ming Zhao Po’s Amazing Chinese Cuisine. The smells seemed more and more enticing as I entered the threshold of the little shop.

When I reached the smooth granite counter-top, the store owner, Ming, was already look-ing down at me with a warm and welcoming smile. “Do you need a little help?” she whis-pered. I gave her my tiny clawed hand and she lifted me onto the counter. After all, what’s a Southwestern Chinese pygmy flight-less dragon supposed to do? FLY?

“The usual?” Ming queried as she poured me a cup of hot green tea. “How did you know?” I joked. Soon “The Usual” was on a plate and sitting in front of me- a plate of General Tsao’s Chicken.

The Note

If it is a clue

If it smells of mystery

It needs a watchful eye

And a clever, caring, mind.

We talked and watched the busy market-place as the sun melted into the sky behind us. “I’ll be back again for breakfast tomor-row” I promised, leaping off the granite. I wandered back into the crowd. Ming waved goodbye to me with a single hand as she opened the door to her apartments behind the shop.

The next morning, I re-entered the plaza. The mall was as alive as ever, with sunlight streaming through the windows of every single shop. When I reached Ming’s stall, she was nowhere to be found, so I used my stub-by arms to pull myself up over the counter-top and into the back rooms. “Ming?” I called. There was no answer except the remnants of my voice echoing back at me. “I came for b-b-b-breakfast!”Now I was scared. As I slowly tiptoed down from the counter to investi-

gate, Ming’s shop was plunged into darkness.

As soon as the lights turned off, I fell to the ground, then staggered back up to my feet and felt the wall for a light switch. When my hand touched something small and knobby, I turned it, and light was restored to the room.

Ming’s apartments had been blown apart. Chairs were strewn around the room. Broken crockery outlined the walls. Stray molding and paintings from Ming’s walls were flung around the room.

Upon closer inspection I found a piece of purple fabric, which did not strike me as unusual. But after looking under every nook and cranny, the piece of fabric did deserve a little bit of attention. Hmmm, I thought, boring through the fabric with my eyes. Tiny lettering was etched onto one side of it!

Thinking

My hand beside my face,

Thinking

Like the rest of me

And

Quiet buzzing in my head

What in the world? I thought. This note had to be a clue, but seriously, why couldn’t it make a little more sense? I blew my breath out hard, flung the fabric down on the floor, and buried my snout in my hands.

I tried my hardest to break the code and make more sense of it, but it took me a while before I even got a clue about what it meant.

A long time ago, Ming taught me something she called “Number –code.” It was a way of mixing numbers and letters to create a read-able code that looked almost like the English we are used to reading.

So if I thought in Number-code, the clue would translate to:

HELP FABRIC STORE

UNCLE BAD

“Uncle Bad!” I exclaimed out loud. Ming had told me about Uncle Bad! She said that he was out to capture the entire Chinese food industry. Suddenly, the truth came to me. Uncle Bad was out to kidnap my best friend- and her amazing recipes!

Chapter 4

The Rescue

Hush, Hush

Wind whistling past my face

Thud, Thud

Footsteps slapping the ground

I am running.

I ran like I had never ran before, wind slap-ping against my scales. Customers scattered to and fro as I sped past without a word.

The stall that I needed was right in front of me- Fabrics R us. Bells rang as I slammed open the door and collapsed to the ground, trying to catch my breath.

“Hello, how may I help you?” A man with a harsh glint to his ruby red eyes questioned me. I eyed him from head to toe. His cloak was made from the same purple fabric as Ming’s clue!

I knew what I had to do. With a flying leap and a strangled yell I brought the evil Uncle Bad to the ground. “Take-me-to-Ming!” I shouted breathlessly, pummeling his stout stomach after every word. With a deep moan the man heaved me off of his chest and dragged me into a back room.

“Oh, Ming, he floored me.” Uncle Bad cried. “You can go. Just please, oh please, take him with you.” At the sight of my little body, Ming Zhao Po smiled. She pulled me towards her in a hug, while Uncle Bad wept.

“I just wanted to sample your best dish. I’m sorry. I just wanted to try your General Tsao’s Chicken!” Uncle Bad cried. “There, there, my friend. I will have it ready for you at dinner time.” Ming consoled him.

That night, Ming, Uncle Bad and I sat to-gether in Ming’s apartment (after helping clean it up, of course.) Uncle B. snorted and gulped as he wolfed down every bite of his meal. I didn’t blame him. Ming’s chicken is too delicious for delicate consumption.

Soon Ming walked out of the kitchen with a surprise of her own, a little necklace with a silver ticket hanging from it dangled from her elegant hand. “This is your free pass to my shop,” she told me. “From now on, you can come to my store and have free food every single time!”

So it was meant to be that the story of a heroic dragon, a beautiful damsel in distress (sort of), and an evil uncle turned out all right after all. A sort of happily ever after.

December was one of the most spectacular months in second grade with many jolly fun activities like reading books. My favorite books are “Santa Calls” and “June 29, 1999” and so many more! After reading books we made Oobleck. Oobleck was from a story called

“Bartholomew and the Oobleck”. It was about a King that wanted something else to fall from the sky. Next we did water cycle posters in groups of three and four. The people in my group were Erika, Patrick and Kyle. At the end of December we did par-

ty rotations like snowmen mad out of marshmallow, licorice and lots more candy. We did lots more rotations and they were so fun! As you can see, December was a sparkling month because we did many exciting projects.

glove as everyone laughed at him. He slowly climbed the mountain, and when he reached the top he buried his rainbow glove in the moist ground. Then he heard the voice again, “Come back in one day, but be sure to paint a fox on top of the ground above the glove so the magic can start.” Glove did as he was told and painted the fox.

The next morning Glove came up the mountain and was overwhelmed when he saw a plant growing where he had planted the glove. He knelt down in front of the plant and studied it. Then a wind crossed his face and whispered, “Name it.” He thought long and hard until he came up with one. Everyone could hear he yelled, “The fox glove!”

Long ago in the land of Red Sun, a fairy tale place, they say there lived a fox named Glove. His name was Glove because he loved gloves. One day while Glove was playing around he heard a voice. It said to him, “Go up to the mountain tops and bury one thing special to you.” Glove knew what he must do. He told everyone what he had heard but none of them listened. He set off the next morning with his rainbow

school. One day Mrs. Riley said to come to the carpet. “I am going to teach you how to write a poem.” “A poem is looking at an object in a dif-ferent way” said Mrs. Riley. “Oh that does not seem that hard” I thought to myself. That day I learned that stu-dents learn new things at school everyday. More important is that peo-ple learn by trying new things. Recently I taught my dad how

Many people don’t know that you learn new things everyday, but I have come to realize that they are wrong. Every night I think to myself “what have I learned today?” and I can always think of something. Everyday you learn something new because students learn new things at school, people learn by trying new things, and people learn from others. For example everyday students learn new things at

to play Chocolate Fix. The first lev-els were easy for him , but when he got to level 5 he said it was too hard and he did not get it.. Lastly people also learn new things from others. ‘’Hey guess what it’s Chinese New Year” said my little sister, Emme. “Really “ I said. “I learned it in school today’ said Emme. That night I learned that people learn new things from other people all the time.

A Bellybutton By Garrett W. Longest, 3rd grade

(for assignment to write something really gross) When you stick your finger in your bellybutton, you feel something slimy and

green stuff oozes out. Well, maybe green stuff doesn’t ooze out, but you can find bellybutton lint! When you pull your finger out, it is stinky and smelly. You are just about to pass out when you breathe in clean air. A bellybutton is dirty, unclean and unwashed, and when you pull your finger out of one you do not want to lick it. You can wash it, but it will still be smelly, and it gets red when you wash it. I think bellybut-tons are gross, so what’s in yours? Winterpock Poem

When You Have a Little Sister By Abby Frazier,

3rd grade

When you have a little sister you always have someone to play with. Sometimes it can be annoying or painful but the great thing is you always have someone to look after. I love having a little sister because you always have someone to laugh with and play games with! Without my little sister I would always be lonely. Sometimes we have sleepovers in each other’s rooms on the weekends! We also try to be spies and find out what we’re hav-ing for dinner. We have to be extra quiet. We use our cameras and DSIs. We also write stories together. When we were at the beach with Elizabeth, Grandma, and Grandpa we wrote a story about what we did out on the beach that day. That’s why I like having the best little sister in the world!!

Roller coasters by: Caroline Shockley

4th Grade What my little sister Courtney and others need to know is that they should ride roller coasters, because they don’t know what they are missing out on. Roller coasters are so much fun. Some reasons I think people should ride them are, besides being fun, you don’t know what to expect, you feel like you are going to die when you go down a giant hill, they can also go in an unexpected loop or corkscrew. I had wanted to ride the Expedition Everest at the Animal Kingdom in Disney World, so I did. I got into the roller coaster seat and we started moving really fast. All of a sudden the ride stops and it looks like a Yeti had ripped off the track, and I thought the coaster was going to fall off the track. I didn’t know what was going on then we started going backwards and I could feel my stomach go back-wards with the coaster. I started screaming really loud and I told my Dad I did not see that coming at all. Another reason that everyone should ride roller coasters is because you feel like you are going to die when you go down a giant hill. For example, one day around Halloween time our family went to Busch Gardens for Hallowscream. My Dad really wanted me to ride the Apollo’s Chariot over in Italy country, so I got up the nerve and did. I could hear the track go click clack while we went up this huge hill. I felt like we were as high as the clouds and we went straight down almost into the ground. The hill is a 210 foot drop. I felt like I was going to die. I got off the ride and my Dad asked me, “Do you think your sister will like it?” I said, “No!” Maybe this year she will ride them with me.

One more reason that everyone should ride a roller coaster is because they can go in a loop, or in an out of control corkscrew. For example, I decided that I would ride the Rock n Roll roller coaster at Hollywood Studios in Disney World. There was a sign that said hold on tight, so I did and it shot me off like a bullet going from 0-55 mph. I started screaming really loud then we went in a loop then straight off into a corkscrew. I got off the ride and asked my Dad, “Can we do that again?” He said, “Let’s wait a little bit”, so we did. I think the corkscrew got to my Dad!! He said he forgot about the corkscrew.

WHEN I BROKE MY ARM By Parker Stultz

3rd Grade

One day I was on the monkey bars while a football game was going on, then my hand slipped and I fell and broke my arm. We called the ambulance. All the football players rushed over when they heard me crying! They had to pause the game. We went to the hospital in the ambulance. My sister and dad met us there and my mom rode in the ambulance with me. The ambulance crew gave me a teddy bear. At the hospital it took a while to put the cast on. It was not cool! A week later I got a hard cast. After my arm was better the doctor cut the cast off with a special saw! This saw used vibrations to cut the cast but not skin. Once the cast was off my arm was so dry that when I scratched it the dry skin peeled off. It was really itchy but it felt so much better to be out of the cast. Now I can play outside instead of staying inside all the time laying down. Due to my injury the school made a rule that kindergarteners will no longer be allowed to use the monkey bars.

ART By: Carter Peterson, 4th grade

Many people don’t realize it, but I think it’s important that we need longer art. Art is super, super important! We should have longer art because we have long art projects to complete. For example, one time we had a lot of steps for one project. We had to sew, glue, paint, and color. Our project took us more than four weeks to finish. We should have longer art because we do not have a lot of time to work. One time, I worked for fifteen minutes on my candlestick. I was super mad that time was up, and we didn’t get to work on it for a longer period of time. Lastly, we need longer art because it is very interesting. For example, one time I was very interested in Picasso’s art and so was the rest of the class. But Mrs. Ri-ley showed up at the door and Art was over. Other people should care about this because Art is fun and awesome. Also in Art, you learn new things every day!

The Harry Potter Series By Theodore Micah Darden

4th grade

Have you ever wondered what one of the best book series is? I have found that the Harry Potter series has great detail and has won multiple book awards. The books in the series are hard and long, but if you enjoy reading, this can be a whole new adventure for you.

Everyone should read Harry Potter books because the author tells interesting facts about the story. For ex-ample, when I read Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, close to the end I was sucked in so much I felt I like I was right there with Harry. I even felt the pain when Harry was in a life-threatening situation.

Another reason is I noticed J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, is good at telling a story. When Harry was near a dragon, I covered my face and moved my head simultaneously. When I read the part of the story when Harry was attacked by a dragon and he dodged the flames I could feel the heat from the pages. The great de-tail in the story proved to be entertaining and realistic.

If you don’t want to read and you want to write your own book, you are in the right place. The first book in the series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, had amazing detail. It helped me understand the story (and the books to come) more and is a great model for future authors.

Another reason is that I get most of my ideas from these books, especially at the end of the book when it is most interesting. One time I got an idea from a mystical animal called a Griffon in the third book of the Harry Pot-ter series. I could just imagine the Griffon flying away with Sirius Black, who was a wanted prisoner. I will use that image to help me make my own story that will become as good as the Harry Potter series. I realize that when I read Harry Potter books I feel mes-merized by the story. I hope you will feel the same and en-joy these books as much as I did.

Making Friends is Harder than Cutting Cake By: Hannah Adams, 4th grade

Did you ever wonder if making friends was as easy as cutting cake? Well, I have found out that it is harder than cutting cake.

When my family moved here 2 ½ years ago from another part of Virginia, it was hard to fit in with a new crowd and a new school. Everyone had already made their friends and I felt left out. On my first day of school, I had asked a couple of people if they would sit with me at lunch, but they did-n’t even answer my question which really hurt my feelings. Maybe they don’t realize how scary it is to move away from everyone you know and try to start new?

Another example is that I thought I had made a friend and we started a dog walking business. We had walked a couple of dogs together and everything seemed to be going well. Then one day she started walking the dogs by herself and stopped talking to me and I never knew why.

Since those 2 examples have happened, I have made some really good friends and we al-ways have great times together. But I will always remember the way I felt when they didn’t want to be friends with me.

It takes hard work and guts to get out there and make new friends. You just have to be your-self, and maybe someday making friends will be easier than cutting cake!

One Christmas Night By Erika Forsen

2nd grade

When I was at Christmas Night, my cats sleep in peace. It was as cold in my house as a snow storm. My hamster ran on his wheel like a racecar. Then I hear the wind blow and then I fall asleep. When I am asleep, I hear reindeers feet. They trip and they hop and then they stop. I heard a "Shhh!' down the chimney And when he's gone. I tiptoed downstairs and look. Pink presents, purple presents, all sorts of presents. Notes in the Christmas tree. Our cookies are gone. The milk is spilled. Now it's school and I am still happy to learn!

BASKETBALL By: Alyssa Miller, 4th grade

Have you ever wondered witch sport gives you the most exercise? I have found out that whenever I jog off the court I’m covered in sweat and I’m tired. Basketball gives you exercise while dribbling the ball, receiving a pass, and blocking a person. Basketball gives you exercise when you’re drib-bling the ball. For example, one time I had the ball and was heading down court. Then suddenly I lost control and I was dribbling all over the court. Another reason basketball gives you exercise is when you’re receiving a pass. For example, once I saw the ball shooting toward me but it hit the ground and started rolling. I knew the other team could get the ball, so I ran with all my might. Then I finally got the ball. That was a lot of work I murmured to myself. Last, basketball gives you exercise when you’re blocking your person. One time I was outside about to play a game of basketball. “I’ll block Alyssa” a voice said from the distance. So I looked, and it was my brother Corey. He was the best basketball player there. We started the game. Corey moved around a lot. “Basketball takes a lot of exercise,” I said. “Yeah,” Corey said back. This makes me think that basketball gives me exercise in a lot of different ways.

Why Winterpock Has the Best Teachers Ever!!

By Anabelle Dow     4th grade

What parents and others need to know is that Winterpock has the best teachers ever! The students here love their teachers because they give us freedom and make school fun.

Most teachers make you stay at your desks, but not at Winterpock. Once during math I was leaning back and forth in my chair trying to see the board while Mrs. Riley was writing math problems for us to copy down. Then she said “Anabelle, if you can’t see you can sit on the carpet.” I was amazed at this because all of the other kids had to sit at their desks and I got to sit on the carpet! I like how she gave me some freedom to move.

Winterpock teachers are also a lot of fun! Not only do they do fun things in class, but they plan special events outside of school, too! During the summer, I was at home lying on my bed reading a magazine when I heard my mom yell my name. “Yes,” I answered from my bedroom still concentrating on my magazine. “Come down here please,” she said. I opened my door and made my way down to the kitchen. “Yes,” I said reaching in the fridge for some or-ange juice. “I wanted to tell you that Mrs. Senger wants the whole class to go bike riding in the bus loop tonight.” “Great,” I said “I’ll go get ready!”

It is things like this that make me realize how lucky I am. This summer when I get a note in the mail telling me what teacher I get to spend the year with, I will be thankful be-cause I know whoever it is they will be wonderful! My school has the best teachers in the whole wide world!

The Paint Brush

By Libby Hellman 3rd Grade

“Ouch!” I just fell down from the jar and landed with a tap on the desk. Hopefully the girl won’t find me be-

hind the water cup. “Yikes!” She’s got me by my bright body! “No…not the dunking machine!” She’s

plopping my bristly head into the cup and then I rise up gasping for air as she scrapes my head on the side of the cup, the excess water dripping down the sides.

Now she’s shoving my head into the colorful slime! After she finishes sliming me, she glides me across a

rough canvas, and then we repeat the excruciating process again and again. The fun part finally comes when she’s

done. I get to take pride in a beautiful painting. The life of a paintbrush isn’t all fun and games, but it pays

off!

“Fish food!” I thought. A er cranking the handle, the food came pouring out of the container. Eagerly wai ng for my turn, I realized that the hot, Mexican air was too much for me. Long minutes passed, then finally, Dus n was ready to jump. Right before he jumped, I threw the fish food over the edge. When the fish saw him coming, they darted away, like children playing tag. Laughing, I pointed at Dus ng, covered in fish food.

Gathering all my courage, I ran up, and jumped off. The wind rushed around me as I plummeted towards the surface. Splash!  As I swam over to the edge, I thought, “I want to do that again!!!”

So, I climbed out of the water onto a cement pla orm and ran across the wooden bridge to the other side.

To be honest, the Mexican air is too much for me, but the water, that’s a different story.

As I Scampered Through the Quiet House

By: Lily Margeson; 3rd grade

As I scampered through the quite house closing windows from the howling wind I could feel cold winds begging to take me with them. They shrieked scary noises that pierced the silent sky. I remembered my parents were gone to eat dinner but the power was out so I couldn’t call them. My sister Maggie was hiding in a fort on the couch and the pillows seemed to cradle her. I climbed on a shelf and lit two candles. I set one on the window-sill and the other on the coffee table near the pillow fort. The cinnamonish smell com-forted us and Maggie poked her head out and handed me a book. It was called Junie B. Jones and the Toothless Christmas. As I read the leaves were leaping and twirling like ballerinas. “See the ballerinas?” I asked. “What ballerinas?” queried Maggie. “No silly. The leaves. See them leap and twirl?” I said. We watched them perform for about one and a half hours until hail fell. The hail was rose petals. The performance was over. The audience of trees threw hail because they liked the performance. The storm soon ended so we decorated the tree. We had finished decorating when our parents got home. The tree was beautiful but after the storm had collapsed nothing was more elegant than the dancers’ performance.
