Wildcat Words

Greetings Wildcat Families!

Can you believe we are already in the third nine weeks? The

year is flying by and I am so glad to see our students, teachers, and family

members working so diligently to ensure academic success is achieved.

Not only are our students experiencing academic success, but also success

on the basketball court. On Thursday night, our parents, teachers, and

students gathered at the Solomon Calhoun Center to watch our girl’s and

boy’s Wildcat basketball teams take on the Cougars of Crookshank. Both

teams fought for a hard win over a tough competitor. It is wonderful to

witness the pride in everyone as our Wildcats show off their athletic skills

on the court! Way to go to both teams. Keep up the hard work! We are all

AVID News You may have heard your student or their teacher use the term WICOR and

wondered what this acronym meant. WICOR stands for writing, inquiry,

collaboration, organization, and reading. Osceola teachers use WICOR

strategies in the classroom to increase the level of student engagement,

content understanding, and college readiness for all students.

WICOR strategies support student learning in any classroom on campus.

You will notice your students using the WICOR strategies for specific

purposes. Students who write consider audience and purpose, engage in

various writing processes to address specific situations, support their

thinking, and demonstrate understanding. Students who inquire analyze

and synthesize materials or ideas, clarify their own thinking, probe others’

thinking, and work through ambiguity. Students who collaborate work

together toward a common goal, develop positive interdependence, work in

focused study groups, and support the learning of others through inquiry.

Students who organize develop and use processes, procedures, and tools to

study effectively, manage their time through prioritizing and goal-setting,

are prepared for courses, participate during instruction, and interact with

instructors, and self-direct, self-evaluate, self-monitor, and self-advocate.

Students who read understand text structures, apply prior knowledge and

make connections to other texts, self, and the world, make predictions and

ask questions, and create visual images as they read.
