Nobody should feel like they have to deal with digital harassment and online drama alone. Don’t just be a bystander, waiting on the side-lines. Here are tips on how to be an upstand-er:

•Be a wingman. If your friend’s dealing with harassment from classmates, strangers, or a crush, show your friend that you’re someone to depend on. Listen without making judg-ments — especially because your friend may feel powerless and unable to get away from the harassment.•Play nice/Think twice. Let’s face it. You’re going to be mad at people who harass your friends. But feeding into the drama will only make things worse. Find ways to help your friend take action without taking revenge. •Show concern. If you’re worried that your friend is in an abusive romantic relationship, say so. Remember that your friend might not feel manipulated, even if you think it’s obvi-ous. Offer to help your friend end the relation-ship safely. Click here to learn more.•Recruit backup. Help your friend identify oth-er people who will be supportive. Remember that different people might be able to help in different ways.

Be an upstander!

Elementary School CornerMRS. SUSAN C. SCHEELER, PRINCIPAL

DEPARTMENT DOINGSThe elementary Social Studies Department under the guidance of Mrs. Jeanette Amershek celebrated Harriet Tubman Day (March 10) with a song on the morning announcements writ-ten and sung by Jonathan Sprout. We also turned the Elemen-tary School green by sending home a poem requesting everyone wear a green shirt on St. Patrick’s Day. Elementary Science chairperson Mrs. Janelle Blozousky an-nounced that the fourth grade has started the Science and En-ergy Club. Mr. Gary MacCready, Energy Industry Partnership Program Manager and Director of Youth Programs from the ReDCo Group comes into her classroom during the enrichment period on Day 2’s to provide the instruction. The twenty stu-dents participating were chosen based on having the highest average for the first two marking periods in science. Along with learning about science, technology, and energy occupations, the students will be building their very own solar car. The elementary English Language Arts Department under the guidance of Mrs. Natalie Zawada planned an educational and fun celebration for “Read Across America Day” on March 3rd. Students were asked to wear jeans and a red shirt and were giv-en accessories to identify them as “Thing One” or “Thing Two” from the “Cat in the Hat”. During the reading classes, student partners read together choosing the different titles of Dr. Seuss books. At our assembly, students took the reader’s oath and then listened to the “Cat in the Hat” as read by Mrs. Scheeler and then watched the animated movie to compare and contrast both. There was also a PowerPoint that taught students about Dr. Seuss and his books. Students participated as a group in a quiz game show at the end. After the presentation, students en-joyed a treat in their classroom. Special thanks to Mrs. Michelle Wells for her help in this endeavor. The elementary Math department under the guidance of Mrs. Megan Tomko planned activities to celebrate our 100th day of school. Every classroom was divided into two groups with each receiving 100 cups each. Through cooperative efforts each group had to build the highest and soundest structure possible.EDUCATIONALLY SPEAKINGDuring February, each classroom participated in the Prevention Education Program which dealt with the differences between good touching and bad touching.Classrooms also participated in the PA Tracks program whose theme was “Eat Smart to Play Hard.”Newspaper in Education Week was celebrated in conjunction with the Republican Herald during the week of March 3-7. Spe-cial thanks to Mrs. Connie Jarrard for coordinating the activities involved. HELPING OTHERSThe elementary school raised a total of $3,287.18 for the Ameri-can Heart Association through “Jump Rope for Heart”. Our top fundraiser, Miss Kaziah Streisel, raised $352.50 by herself. Thanks to Ms. Kelly Wolfe for coordinating this worthy event! Our staff and students also participated in “Red-Out Day” which

was sponsored by the high school to raise money for the Ameri-can Heart Association. Students celebrated “Hoodie Hoo Day” in the gymnasium on February 20th. Students paid $1.00 to wear a crazy hat to wel-come in spring. Proceeds were donated to Pennies for Patients. Mrs. Dobeck’s class raised the most money in the elementary school for the Pennies for Patients campaign. They will be treated to a pizza party towards the end of the year.First grade students made a charitable donation during their Valentine’s Party this year. The students donated $83.00 to the MA Bears and Friends Relay for Life Team. The MA Bears and Friends Relay for Life team under the direc-tion of Amy Dobeck have currently raised $2,529.12 this school year. On the February 28th In-Service Day teachers and staff held a relay luncheon in which many teachers prepared a lun-cheon food item and all donated $5 each to eat. This luncheon alone raised $360.00. BLOOMSBURG THEATRE ENSEMBLEThe Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble presented “The Amazing Mr. Franklin (or Ben There, Done That)” on Monday, March 10th in the gymnasium. True stories of the life and times of this famous American were presented in a funny and moving show by a professional actor. This program served both as a tool for curriculum enhancement and a unique opportunity for students to discover the world from other perspectives.LUNCH WITH THE PRINCIPALForty-eight (48) elementary students with perfect attendance during the first 100 days of school joined Mrs. Scheeler for lunch at McDonald’s in Frackville on February 26th. Students were treated to a Happy Meal and a chocolate chip cookie. The luncheon was a lot of fun and students were well-behaved. Spe-cial thanks to Mrs. Melissa Honus and Mrs. Gloria Dudash for attending as chaperones. STUDENT APPRECIATION MONTHStudent appreciation month was celebrated during February. Our theme, as always, was student pride and self-esteem. We kicked off the month with a Ronald McDonald assembly with this theme entitled “On the Inside”. All students filled out a personal student profile highlighting special things about them-selves. Throughout the month, students were chosen as students of the day both in the classroom and school-wide. School-wide recipients read their profiles over the morning announcements. On March 3rd the concluding assembly was held to celebrate student accomplishments from the first half of the year. Each school-wide “student of the day” was given a certificate with their picture on it. Special thanks to Ms. Dawn Renn for taking the pictures and creating the certificates. As part of our monthly celebration students in K-4 kicked up their heels at the elementary dance that was held in the gym-nasium on February 27th! Students were excited to join in on dances such as the “Chicken Dance”, “Electric Slide”, and “What Does the Fox Say”. Many dressed up for the occasion. Special thanks to Ms. Kelly Wolfe for coordinating the event and the staff for participating!

Chorus Performs at State CapitolOn Wednesday, March 26th, members of the 7th and 8th Grade and High School Choruses traveled to the State Capitol in Harrisburg. Both groups were invited as performers for Music Advocacy Day in conjunction with Music in Our Schools Month. On this day, music teachers, retired teachers, parents, students and any others who support the impor-tance of music in public education are invited to the Capitol to speak to legislators and show support for this cause. The chorus students were treated to a tour of the Capitol, set up by Representative Neal Goodman; and following a large press confer-ence, the groups performed on the Rotunda steps. The groups sang full choral selections as well as featured soloists. This was truly an honor for Ma-hanoy Area as only three musical ensembles were selected to perform this day and only two groups from Schuylkill County were selected to perform during the entire Music in Our Schools Month.
