Paving The Road To Proficiency:Empowering 21st century learners to develop their cultural understandings,

cross-curricular literacy, and communication

You are invited to join your colleagues at the 2016WAFLT Fall Conference for a wide variety of engagingand exciting professional development opportunitiesdesigned to support you in your quest to teach forproficiency. Here are just a few reasons to attend the2016 WAFLT Fall Conference:

• Thursday Pre-Conference Workshop with ThomasSauer: Are You On The Path To Proficiency? Feelinga little overwhelmed? Journey down the path toproficiency with your colleagues to see how changingthe WHAT in our classes will also change the HOW andcan help you create lesson plans that will help learnersdevelop ownership in a new language.

• Friday Morning Workshops – Whether your focus isperformance assessment, proficiency, technology, orhistory, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to learn andnetwork with colleagues! This year, in conjunction withCESA 6, we are offering PDP Reviewer Training! Seepage 3 for more information on this special offering. Ourkeynote speaker, Thomas Sauer, will also present a 3-hour workshop on Friday focusing on connectingproficiency principles with learning targets.

• Friday and Saturday One-Hour Sessions – This year’sconference includes a plethora of learning opportunitiesacross languages, levels, and various areas of focus.

• Friday and Saturday Technology Workshops – Yourcolleagues are ready to share their high-tech tricks ofthe trade and to help you enhance your instruction withthe latest trends in educational technology.

• Friday Afternoon Keynote Speaker – We are delighted towelcome Thomas Sauer, educational entrepreneur andfounder of LearningShifts, as he presents his keynoteaddress, It's Not What the Teacher Knows, ButWhat the Teacher Does.

Registration opens Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. and theconference will officially begin with the traditional kick-offreception in the Lawrence Room at 8:30 p.m. Theregistration fee includes attendance at any of theone-hour sessions on Friday afternoon & Saturday.Please note that Friday morning workshops, Saturday 90-minute Technology Sessions, and meals not includedin the registration fee are noted by the $ symbol on theConference Overview, page 1.

New teachers and first-time attendees are invited toparticipate in the informal orientation meeting Fridaymorning from 7:45–8:15. Sessions that may be of particularinterest to new teachers are marked with this symbol (�).The Wisconsin Standards for Teacher Development andLicensure addressed in each session or workshop are notedin the brackets following the title of the session. You can finda list of the standards on page 9.

We hope that you will also participate in some of theconference social activities. Please plan to attend theAwards Ceremony, where we will honor the winners of theFrank M. Grittner and the Anthony J. Gradisnik Awards andhear remarks from our 2016 Distinguished LanguageEducator, Linda Havas. This is a wonderful opportunity foryou to celebrate the achievements of your languagecolleagues. The wine and cheese reception and door prizesare all back again! On Saturday morning, join us for acomplimentary continental breakfast and more door prizesat the annual business meeting. Join us, also, for lunch onSaturday, where the Future Language Teacher Award,Recognition of Merit, Certificates of Professional Service,and the Donna Clementi Blue Ribbon Award of Excellencein World Language Programs will be presented. Online registration is the best way to register for theconference. You must have a current email address andcreate a login on the WAFLT website (waflt.org). As youregister, be sure to read instructions carefully and note thesessions that require an additional fee. Remember to register early. Be sure to check deadlines for the conferenceand for hotel reservations. For the latter, contact theRadisson Paper Valley Hotel directly. PDP Reviewer Training at the WAFLT Fall Conference!

WAFLT and CESA 6 are proud to partner in offering PDPReviewer Training. This workshop is for WisconsinProfessional Educators seeking initial training to becomepart of the Department of Public Instruction's ApprovedPDP Reviewer Database. You will become certified toparticipate on PDP teams and review professionaldevelopment plans.

The workshop consists of two parts:

U A two-week online module (approximately 6-12 hoursper participant). IMPORTANT: If the online portion is notcompleted by October 28, the participant will NOT be ableto attend the face-to-face training session. (Thiscoursework will be emailed to you in October.)

U One half-day face-to-face training: 8:00 – 11:30 onFriday, November 4. (Note earlier start time!)

This training is for educators who are NOT currentlycertified PDP reviewers.

There is NO charge for this Friday morning workshop.However, to participate in this workshop, participantsMUST:

C Register for the WAFLT Fall Conference, but NOTregister for any Friday morning workshops (FW-1through FW-13).

C Hold current licensure as a Professional Educator (notInitial Educator) in the State of Wisconsin.

C Complete all of the online coursework before October28, 2016.

C Be present for the entire half-day training: 8:00 a.m. –11:30 a.m. on Friday, November 4 (Note earlier starttime!)

C Bring a fully charged, internet-enabled laptop to useduring the training.

WAFLT Scholarship for

Tomorrow's Teachers

The Executive Board of the Wisconsin Association ForLanguage Teachers is pleased to offer up to 10scholarships available to college-level students preparingto become language teachers. The purpose of thesescholarships is to provide teachers-in-training withfinancial assistance to attend the WAFLT Fall Conference.By attending the conference, teachers-in-training will havethe opportunity to become familiar with WAFLT and thelanguage-specific professional organizations which alsohold meetings during the conference, meet and interactwith teachers already in the profession, become morefamiliar with trends in language education, and learn first-hand the benefits of membership in WAFLT.

Scholarship Requirements

C College/university juniors, seniors, or graduatestudents must be declared language teaching majorsor minors.

C Students who have completed or are currentlyenrolled in a language methods course are eligible.

C Nominators (methods instructor or cooperatingteacher) must be current members of WAFLT, musthave been members for at least the two yearspreceding the nomination, and may only nominate upto 5 students each.

C At least one scholarship will be available for each ofthe languages represented on the WAFLT Board,including: Chinese, French, German, Japanese,Latin, Spanish, and one for Other World Languages.

C Cost of registration for the WAFLT Fall ConferenceC Cost of a Friday Morning Workshop

The scholarship does not include meals or lodging.

Application process: Application instructions andimportant details can be found under “Grants andScholarships” at waflt.org and must be submittedelectronically to [email protected] by September 25.Please follow the specific steps listed (e.g., creating alogin) before submitting application.

IMPORTANT APPLICATION PROCEDURES: Studentapplicants must first go to WAFLT’s website, waflt.org.Please follow the prompts to join WAFLT as a studentmember. Be sure to keep your login and passwordaccessible as you will need them whenever you accessyour information on the website or register for the WAFLTFall Conference. (Do not register for the WAFLT FallConference until you have heard from the scholarshipcommittee!) Students or nominators must submit theapplication electronically, including filling out andattaching the student application form, a one-pagepersonal statement explaining why they wish to attend theWAFLT Fall Conference, and an individualized letter ofrecommendation from a methods instructor or cooperatingteacher. All three documents should be submittedelectronically to [email protected] in one email by eitherthe student or the nominator.

Notification: The WAFLT Grants and ScholarshipsCommittee will process the applications and makerecommendations to the Executive Board. Scholarshipwinners will be notified by email in early October.

Let's journey downthe path to proficiency together to see how changing theWHAT in our classes will also change the HOW and canhelp you create lesson plans that will help learnersdevelop ownership in a new language.

As we continue to focus on our students’ paths toproficiency, join us for the WAFLT ThursdayPre-Conference workshop, featuring Thomas Sauer fromLearningShifts as he guides us on our journeys to createproficiency-based classroom instruction.

About The Presenter

Thomas Sauer, aneducational entrepreneur andfounder of LearningShifts, is avisionary thinker, designer,and change facilitator.Thomas shares his time asthe Director of Design andCommunication for

AdvanceLearning, a newly founded non-profitorganization focused on identifying teacher effectivenessin non-core subject areas and empowering educators tobecome more effective. Previously, Thomas served asWorld Language Specialist for school systems in majorurban areas such as Louisville, Kentucky, where he was

instrumental in guiding teachers to design units of study,and learning resources and to implement articulated,proficiency-based programs and assessments. He worksthroughout the country with school districts, universities,professional organizations, and other educational entitieson curriculum and assessment development, 21st Centuryskills and literacies, effective use of technology tofacilitate learning, and bringing transparency toeducational institutions and organizations.

Previously, Thomas has been a program consultant andprogram director for several successful STARTALKstudent and teacher programs and a multi-year ForeignLanguage Assistance Program (FLAP) grant. He hasserved on the ACTFL Board of Directors, as President ofthe Kentucky World Language Association (KWLA), andon the boards of the National Association of DistrictSupervisors of Foreign Languages (NADSFL) and theCentral States Conference on the Teaching of ForeignLanguages (CSCTFL). Thomas was one of the authors oftwo national framework publications impacting today’sworld language classrooms: the P21 World LanguagesSkills Map (published by the Partnership for 21st CenturySkills) and the Teacher Effectiveness for LanguageLearning (TELL) Project. Named a “Global Visionary” bythe World Affairs Council of Kentucky & Southern Indianain 2010 and the Pearson Supervisor of the Year by theNational Association of District Supervisors of ForeignLanguages in 2011, Thomas has turned his attention tousing a global professional learning network (PLN) inorder to help teachers around the world take charge oftheir own professional learning.

Thomas Sauer shares his timeas the Director of Design andCommunication forAdvanceLearning, a newlyfounded non-profit organizationfocused on identifying teachereffectiveness in non-coresubject areas and empoweringeducators to become moreeffective. Previously, he served

as World Language Specialist for school systems in majorurban areas such as Louisville, Kentucky where he wasinstrumental in guiding teachers to design units of study,learning resources, and to implement articulatedproficiency-based programs and assessments. He hasserved on the ACTFL Board of Directors, as President of theKentucky World Language Association (KWLA), and on theboards of the National Association of District Supervisors ofForeign Languages (NADSFL) and CSCTFL.

Thomas was one of the authors of two national frameworkpublications impacting today’s world languageclassrooms: the P21 World Languages Skills Map(published by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills) andthe Teacher Effectiveness for Language Learning (TELL)Project and was named a "Global Visionary" by the WorldAffairs Council of Kentucky & Southern Indiana in 2010and the Pearson Supervisor of the Year by the NationalAssociation of District Supervisors of Foreign Languagesin 2011.

What is WAFLT’s phone number?

Because our organization is run entirely by volunteers, wedo not have a central office. For registration-specificconcerns, please email us at [email protected].

What if my school district is paying for myregistration and mailing a check?

Start your registration online and print your paymentreceipt. Then, give the receipt to your district to write thecheck. We recommend that you ask your district howmuch time is needed to allow sufficient time forprocessing. To avoid late registration fees, checks mustarrive no later than the Friday before the conference.

Can I attend the conference without registering?

No. All attendees must register for the conference.

I can only attend Friday. Is there a special Friday-onlyoption?

WAFLT registration is available for Friday/Saturday orSaturday only. There is no Friday-only option.

The Friday workshop I wanted to attend is full. Is therea waiting list?

We do not maintain a waiting list, but occasionally takelate cancellations which may make tickets available.Check at the registration table to see if seats in theworkshop you would like to attend have become available.

Is there a Thursday-only option?

Yes. Consult the online registration form for the mostcurrent rate information.

I registered using my personal credit card and need tosubmit a receipt to my district for reimbursement.
