Petroleum Engineering
A petroleum engineer is involved in nearly all of the stages of oil and gas
field evaluation, development and production. The aim of their work is to
maximize hydrocarbon recovery at minimum cost while maintaining a
strong emphasis on reducing environmental impact.
Description
Petroleum engineers are divided into several groups
who find hydrocarbons by analyzing subsurface structures with geological and geophysical
methods.
Petroleum Geologists
who work to optimize production of oil and gas via proper well placement, production levels and enhanced oil
recovery techniques. They use computer simulations to assist in the identification
of risks and to make forecasts on reservoir potential.
Reservoir engineers
who manage the interface between the reservoir and the well through such tasks as perforations, sand control,
artificial lift, down hole flow control and down hole monitoring equipment. They
also select surface equipment that separates the produced fluids.
Production engineers
who manage the technical aspects of drilling both production and injection wells. They work in multidisciplinary
teams alongside other engineers, scientists, drilling teams and
contractors.

Texas Tech University was created by legislative action in 1923 and has the distinction of being the largest comprehensive higher education institution in the western two-thirds of the state of Texas. The university is the major institution of higher education in a region larger than 46 of the nation’s 50 states and is the only campus in Texas that is home to a major university, law school and medical school.
