Important Club Notices

Historic Registration Note

Financial members of the F.O.C.C. are reminded, of the following requirements as per The New Code Of Practice, effective 1st July 2012, when presenting their logbook(s) for resigning and/ or the issuing of a new logbook.

Members have until 31st December 2014 to ensure that their Historic Registration remains active for the next clubs financial year. In order to avoid any un-necessary delays, as experienced last year - when almost everyone wanted their logbooks attended to on the same night - it would be appreciated if this exercise were spread over the next three club meetings.

Mandatory Requirements

1. New F.O.C.C. membership renewal receipt

2. Logbook(s)

3. Current registration papers

4. Statutory declaration (Unless you are a new member on Historic

Registration)

5. Left Hand Drive vehicles - Certificate of Exemption

Remember, it is your responsibility to ensure that the correct paperwork presented, or your logbook, will not be signed by any of the Authorized Officers. The Statutory Declaration must be completed, in full and in a legible manner. Any lines not used should be “Zed” off. Multiple vehicles can be used on the one form.

If the Statutory Declaration form is not completed correctly, it will not be accepted and your logbook will not be signed. Do not send the Statutory Declaration to the club. It must be presented when upgrading your logbook.

Remember, if you do not have your logbook signed by 31st December 2014, then you will be driving illegally - i.e. unregistered and uninsured. There are very heavy penalties imposed if you are caught.

4 REPORT FROM THE PRESIDENT

Whilst Camtorque every two months was good for me having to produce “words” every two months it was not good for the FOCC overall when it came to getting information to the members. As result I am now producing another “words” for the coming Camtorque.

The first steam engine to do any useful work was put in action over 300 years ago and really was the start of the “Industrial Revolution” in the U.K. It lead to an expansion of the U.K. influence in to all parts of the world and the maps of the time showed a lot of the land mass in “British Pink”. A lot of it has since been hived off as democratic states which have turned into dictatorships with low standards of living for the masses.

The dictators and hangers on do pretty well however.

To get back to steam. On the week end of 15 and 16 November the Mannum Museum is to have a celebration of steam. The steam driven paddle steamer “Marion” is based at the Museum and there will be the normal Museum stationary steam engines on display and a few visiting stationary steam engines as well, a couple of them about 300 mm long. The Marion will be going for one hour cruises during the two days that the event is open and will be taking paying passengers. I might eventually get the ride I tried to organise for the FOCC some time back.

I recently met a young man with a 1948 two door Anglia Sedan that was even more different power wise than my Anglia Tourer. I had been involved with the small English Fords since the early 1970’s and was able to buy some interesting hot up gear that was available for the cars in the 1940’s and 1950’s most of which ended up on the Tourer. These days’ things can be done differently and as a result the young man has found that clutches can slip, gearboxes can jump out of second gear and if you put smaller wheels on the small Fords you need to run a lot more revs to get anywhere. I no longer need the “no jumping out of second gear” gearbox out of the Tourer so I will sell the gearbox to the young man. As part of the deal he also gets a 100E driven plate with springs in it to give a smooth take up when the clutch is released. The original driven plate was a solid one because it was cheap and easy to make and differential repairs were cheap. The revs bit can be overcome with a different diff ratio and that is not so easy to do these days although because of the Ford Ten specials built in the U.K. in the 1940’s and 1950’s other ratio’s were easy to come by, just spend money. So what is so different about this Sedan, it has a Nissan Pulsar turbo very neatly fitted under the bonnet. It is all the young man’s work and looks like a professional job.

The key man in the footy clubrooms is a bit hard to get onto but the FOCC will go ahead with the change to the second Tuesday of the month from the 13 th of January 2015. It will entail some payment by the FOCC but that will give us rights to the night and we will not be pushed out by the darts people or some group that wants to hold a birthday party in the hall.

There will be a Christmas in the Park on the 7th of December for the FOCC to be organised by Gloria Howe see the details in this edition of Camtorque.

5MANCAVE SPECIAL

PAUL'S PERFECTPARADISE

It took almost 40 years to assemble my man cave.

In my teen years, my brother and I would dismantle (“wreck”) cars as an aside to my father’s sideline of engine reconditioning and marine conversions.

He would buy suitable donor vehicles including many Customline Y blocks and Barge Fairlanes through to the compact 289 V8’s. We learnt the easier ways to remove the engines and drivetrains and salvage the “good bits” and how to chop up the remainder to fit on a trailer to be taken to the scrap dealers. Some of these vehicles had number plates or badges which I kept since that time.

The first number plates I was gifted were from a neighbor whose son in law had been killed whilst serving overseas. Maj. Peter Badcoe V.C. was killed in action in Vietnam in 1967.

Prior to this he had been stationed for some time in Malaysia where he purchased a Borgward Isabella. That vehicle was returned to my neighbor as next of kin and it was then registered locally. The Malaysian number plates were probably the first “collectables” that I really noticed.

Over the years I kept interesting plates from a variety of sources – each plate has a story. My first English plates came off a Ford Anglia that I had purchased.

Other plates came from friends travelling overseas – especially the US.

To complete the “all states of Australia” collection I was again helped by friends who kept a look out for plates from their states. I don’t have a full wall of plates such as I have seen in some museums – I am happy to have just a few plates with plenty of variety and each with a story to tell.

Hubcaps were also collected over the years and when I finally had a shed I lined the walls so that I could hang up this stuff which for years had been sitting in boxes, unseen and unappreciated.

In more recent times I have added some grills – again nearly all have been much appreciated gifts.

One in particular which comes out for display on Anzac Day is an original Ford GPW grill which is often confused with the more common Willys Jeep grill.

Enjoy the accompanying photos.

6 HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR RIDE - CAR BIBLES

HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR RIDEOver the coming month’s you’ll find in-depth articles describing in intricate detail how everything automotive works.

These tips apply to pretty much every car owner, from business fleet owners, to specialists like a limo service, to the weekend hobbyist.

This month, we start with Basic Car Maintenance.

Basic car maintenance really isn’t that hard. There are simple things that you can do on your own like being able to use a silicone lubricant to protect your car from rusting.

TSBs and wiring diagrams

If you’re looking for TSB (Technical Service Bulletins) or wiring diagrams for your vehicle, BBB industries have access to most of them for free. (Almost any decent car shop will have access to this sort of information - as the owner, you should too). BBB’s search page is well worth a look. Major recalls normally result in owners being contacted, but minor ones get done each time a vehicle is taken to a main network dealer. TSBs are the bulletins sent to the dealer networks containing info on known bugs and issues with all makes and models that need to be rectified when the vehicles come in.

Wheels & Tyres

Clean brake dust off regularly

Brake dust contains all sorts of nasty stuff. If you leave it too long, the combination of road grime, moisture and heat from your brakes will bake it on to your wheels . Brake dust normally clings to wheels with static electricity so a damp sponge and clean cold water is the best way to get it off.

Check your tyre pressures

Check your tyre pressures regularly - once a week is ideal. Bad tyre pressures can affect fuel economy, handling and comfort. It’s easy to do and there is no excuse not to. Rotate you tyres! - Every 5,000 miles or 8,000km.

Check your tread depth

Bald, slick tyres might be good for motor racing but they’re no good on the road. Most tyres come with tread wear bars built into them now - find one, examine it and if your tread is too low, replace your tyres. Four new tyres might seem expensive but they’re cheaper than a fine or an accident.

Engine

Check your belts

At the front of your engine there will be a series of rubber drive belts that loop around various pulleys, driving everything from the

alternator to the a/c compressor. Rubber perishes, more so in extreme conditions like those found in an operating engine bay. Get your timing belt and accessory drive belt checked every 25,000 miles, preferably replacing it every 50,000 miles.

Checking your oil level

This is something everyone can do - it’s quick and easy and it’ll tell you if your engine needs oil. If the oil is too high or too low, it can cause trouble for your engine. To check the oil, park on level ground and wait until the engine has cooled down after driving, then locate the dipstick. Pull it out and wipe it clean, then push it all the way back in until the top of it is seated properly in the dip tube again. Wait a moment then pull it out again. Check the level of the oil. If it’s between the high and low marks, you’re fine. (If it’s too low, add a little.) The high and low marks can be denoted by two dots, an “H” and “L” or a shaded area on the dipstick. Why not just read the level first time around? The first time you pull the dipstick out, it will have oil all over it and it will be difficult to tell where the level is. That’s why you need to wipe it on a rag to get a clean dipstick, then dip it back into the oil to get a good reading.

Checking your coolant level

The coolant is the other thing your engine cannot go without. Every engine is different but if you check your handbook you should find where the coolant reservoir is. It will normally be bolted to one side of the engine bay or the other, and be a white semi-transparent bottle. Wait until your engine is cool and take a look at it - the outside should have ‘low’ and ‘high’ markings on it and the level of coolant inside should be between the two.

* Note: Do not take the radiator cap off to check coolant levels. If the coolant system is still hot then it is still under pressure and the pressure release will burn you.

Fuel / Gas

Will higher octane or premium fuel give me better gas mileage and/or more power?

No. Sportier cars have higher compression engines which generate more power and require higher octane fuel to prevent detonation. That’s where the myth of “premium = more power” came from. If your handbook says “regular”, use regular. See octane and power for more information.

Bodywork / Paint

Keeping your paint finish in good condition

Only choose superior car detailing supplies to keep your car’s interior and exterior like new. There are plenty of decent quality waxes and polishes on the market today and if the last time you waxed or polished your car was over a decade ago, things have changed considerably since then.

The wax and polish compounds are far more sophisticated both in terms of protection from fading, the look of the finish, and the ease of application. For example Turtle Wax Ice gets rid of that old problem of white wax residue. Is a clean car a vanity thing? Partly, yes, but if you park under a tree where birds help repaint your car with recycled blueberries, that guck will come off a lot easier if it falls on a waxed paint job.

7ON A LIGHTER NOTE BY MR GULLIBLE

I must apologise for not having a report in the last few issues but life has got in the way just a little.

Still managed to get a few events organised though, and most turned out ok.

The December ‘End of Year’ get together is shaping up nicely with a few prizes to give out and some ridiculous banter about nothing in particular to be had. I may even regale some Mother in-Law stories if Gordon will let me. There is a Teddy bear theme this year so bring your teddy along (that is the one you carry not the one you wear

Next event in January is another one of those where we drive at a sedate pace and arrive at a location to 1. Display our loved cars, 2. Check out other peoples loved cars, 3. Check out the stalls and amusements as well as have ridiculous banter about nothing in particular.

Car 1, The Galaxie Skyliner

If you recall it had just been painted and it was the reassembly process.

Amazingly, I remembered where most parts are meant to go. But nothing quite fits as it used to. Found a set of new rubber whare in the USA and that should help seal the car up again, but naturally they don’t fit right. All those clips for the stainless trim, I think I counted some 60, needed to be made by modifying whatever could be found. But it is all on and alignment has presented some interesting problems. However it is looking much better than it was.

The chrome, oh the chrome! Oh what have you got yourself into Mr Gullible? I used a company in Edwardstown and the best result from this exercise was elevated blood pressure.

Bits had to go back to be redone and all the threads needed to be re tapped. They even lost a few parts and the job took three times as long as it was meant to. Still have some chrome to do but I will be going elsewhere.

The front seat electrics got sorted. Amazing but they do have electric driven seats back in 59. Ended up I found one broken wire which supplies power to the 4 way switch and the back of the switch falling apart. Also the drives work from 1 motor and two clutches that determine if it would shift vertically or horizontally. One of the clutches was jammed up with carpet fluff so all sorted and working.

The door trim that I had said is exactly that. The vinyl part is standard and locally available but the silver is mylar and no longer made but …. However, through an acquaintance with a mate who has a mate who knows a guy in Wisconsin I may be on to some. Not holding out much hope for this task.

Truck 1, F700

No time to do anything so status quo. Well actually worse. The Clutch fluid has leaked out from just sitting, the brake pedal goes to the floor and she is being a bit reluctant to fire up. There may be some time to work on it between December 3rd 2am to December 3rd 2:30 am.

Truck 2, 1942 Jail Bar

I could do some work on this truck if I finish early on the F700.

9LIGHTING UP CHRISTMAS

LIGHTING UP CHRISTMAS

Fourteen years ago around December 2000, after visiting many displays around Adelaide with my wife Jude, on a warm, balmy and still night, I sat at the top of our neighbours elevated driveway overlooking our place and realized that our characteristic home could be transformed into a wonderland of Christmas Lights that I had not seen during our visits to other peoples homes. It was there when I formulated a vision of how I wanted the display to look and become my Christmas Lights Wonderland.

The creativity, design and erection of all of the displays is generally conducted by myself with a little help from family and neighbours who assist in the placement of some of the high and difficult locations. (Eg trees)

My wife Jude offers moral support and helps with handling some of the longer light sets that need to be positioned in high and difficult locations. Generally I perform all of the tasks myself ensuring that all of the testing and placement is done correctly.

Dismantling the display generally takes about the same amount of time as setting up. This is due to each display being cleaned of dirt and spider webs before being carefully placed into the numbered box or bag for

the next year. I have found that this procedure gives longer life to the displays, which after all are expensive to purchase.

From the time the display is switched on for the public, a variety of sweets and lollies are provided for the children and adults. Selected Christmas Carols is also provided from numerous artists that I think the public will enjoy, via an external speaker system that has been rigged up for maximum effect resonating the garden area and setting the scene of Christmas. This year we have also had the added pleasure of two of our neighbour musicians, Samantha and Alec, who volunteered their services on occasion, playing a variety of Christmas Carols using a violin and guitar to the bemusement of the crowds.

By being outside every night and talking to literally thousands of people who visited our display, one can conclude that what has attracted peoples attention to our Wonderland of lights is, it’s creativity, maintaining the Christmas spirit (feeling of peace and tranquillity), having a complete Nativity Scene including the Angel Gabrielle and the Star of Bethlehem, being allowed to meander through the garden area and ask questions and the professionalism and attention to detail of the whole display layout. In short, I have presented a Wonderland of Christmas Lights with the WOW factor.

Providing a Wonderland of Christmas Lights, which is appreciated by the community, has brought about an incredible feeling of achievement and satisfaction for the family and me. The success of our display has resonated around South Australia and particularly O’Halloran Hill. When so many people hear about and travel long distances just to see and experience our wonderland of lights, one feels very humble and proud that your creation can give so much pleasure, the feeling of peace and tranquillity and maintaining the true value and spirit of Christmas.
