50, 60, 70 YearDear WSA:

I wish to express my appreciation forrecognizing and honoring me with a checkand certificate of my 60 years of member-ship. Also for the two tickets to the 2007WSA Awards Banquet.

I was born in Kemmerer, WyomingSeptember 10, 1929 to a Coal Miner’sfamily. At 12 years of age I worked at

menial jobs to earn a few quarters,progressing to work as a nurs-

es aide during high school inthe local hospital. With the hospital experience I enterednursing school in 1947 and received a nursing diploma in

1950.February 23, 1951 I married Benjamin H. Synon who hailed

from Wisconsin. We were introduced by a mutual friend of myfamily in the snow banks in the Wyoming winter of 1948-49.

I worked in several hospitals in the West and PacificNorthwest as my husband worked for Union Pacific Railroad and wemoved a lot with his job as foreman and signal maintenance. Since1955 we have resided in The Dalles, Oregon permanently and our cur-rent home on Mill Creek for forty-six years.

In our 56 years of marriage February 23, 2007 we had four children,twelve grandchildren, and two greatgrandchildren. Our first child wasstillborn. Second child, a daughter Cheryl is a registered nurse andmarried to Mitchell Rice. They have six children and two grandchil-dren. Our third child Benjamin M. has an agri-business degree fromOSU and manages our cherry orchards along with his own. He marriedSusan Wilson and they have two children. Chrystie our fourth has adegree in Accounting from OSU and also is a CPA. She married RandyHenderson and they have four children whom she is home schooling.

I participated in my children's 4-H and FFA activities which helpedthem to earn college money. I am a Eucharistic Minister in St. PeterCatholic Church.

I was an avid gardener growing fruits and vegetables, sharing themwith the local Senior Center, neighbors and friends.We have 50 acresof cherry orchard which my son currently operates and I help mainlywith the book work. During cherry harvest I basically do all the paperwork for the pickers.

We have done some travelling overseas. The most memorable tripwas to Israel where we visited the place where they proclaim Jesus wasborn and we followed the path that Jesus walked thousand of yearsago.

With a closing note I have friendships of 70+ years that I have treas-ured. My children are all members of WSA.

Thank you for the check and certificate honoring my 60 years as a member ofWSA.

I was born in Prospect Heights, Canon City, Colorado to Ignatz and MariaBlatnick in December 1929. I attended schools in Canon City. In the followingyears, I worked for Southwestern Transportation Co. The Royal Gorge CoalMine, and Calahan Lead and Zinc Co.

In 1951, I was inducted into the U.S.Army, serving in the Korean Conflict.After two years I was honorably discharged. I went to work at The Allen Mine inWeston, CO.

I married Joy Lou Beach on November 27, 1953. We lived in Stonewall, COfor three months. At this time the coal mine cut back work to one day a week, sowe moved to Florence, CO.

Soon, I went to work for Southwestern Transportation Co inCanon City. The company was sold to Verl Harvey and Don Ward& Co. The latter bought out Verl Harvey. I worked for Don Wardand Co, until 1973. I hauled cement all over Colorado, New Mexicoand Wyoming.

In March 1973, I was hired by the US Postal Service as custodianfor the Post Office in Florence. I worked there for 25 years, retiringin 1995.

My wife and I purchased our present home in 1955. Our son,Tim, was born February 7, 1967. We enjoyed spending time withhim, attending school activities, watching him play softball and tak-ing part in his Boy Scout projects. We also had fun hunting, fishingand camping together in our pickup and camper.

I am a Lifetime Member of the VFW Post #4061 in Canon City. Ienjoy attending meetings, bartending for Family Nights and playingpoker with other members. My wife and I liked to dance and belongto the Southern Colorado Family Polka Club in Pueblo, CO. Weboth have leg and feet problems.

After retiring, my son and I did odd jobs, mainly cutting lawnsand trimming trees.

Our grandson was born in 1994. We love him and are helping ourson raise him. We enjoy attending his school activities, sportsevents and taking part in his Boy Scout projects.

My wife and I enjoy trips to Cripple Creek, CO, playing the slotsin the many casinos and having fabulous meals there.

I keep busy working in my yard, cutting wood and tending to myfireplace. Also am always busy repairing things, helping withhousework and many, many “Honey Do’s.”

Thank you again for the check and certificate. I will treasurethem always. I received congratulations from the mayor andFlorence City Council. I also received a congratulatory card fromSenator Ken Kester of Colorado and copies the the newspaper arti-cle (see right) from 3 banks.

Many peoplebelong to organ-izations andhave insurancepolicies but notmany can saythey have

belonged to an organization, or have hadan insurance policy for 60 years.

One Florence man, John Blatnick, canmake this claim. When Blatnick was 17his mother signed him up for WSAFraternal Life, a fraternal benefit society.

WSA Fraternal Life was established in1908 and was first known as TheZapadna Slovanska Veza, or The WesternSlavonic Association, according to theorganization’s web site. Before the organ-ization was established, commercialinsurers took advantage of Europeanimmigrants. When a mineworker waskilled or disabled other mine workerswould pass a hat to collect money to helpthe mineworker’s family and from thispractice the association was formed.

Blatnick married Joy Lou Beach andtogether they have a son, Tim, and agrandson, Jeremy.

ing my 60 years of membership. It was a very pleasant sur-prise!

I would have to say with regret, our traveling days areover. In our younger days we did quite a bit of traveling hereand abroad. I visited aunts, uncles and many cousins inSlovenia, at least five times, and of course, other Europeancountries and in the states here. I did go to Slovenia oncewith my husband who is of English and Irish descent. It was

quite an experience for him.Again, many thanks for your remembrance of my 60

monetary gift and certificate ofrecognition.

Raising six children and workingas an RN off and on for 40 yearsmade life interesting as well as chal-lenging.

We live in the country and havehad beef cattle, pigs, chickens andsled dogs, plus a few house pets,through our 45 years at this address.We now are down to dogsitting fam-ily pets. Keeping busy has madethese 15 years of retirement fly by.Some projects left for retirement,still need to be completed. However,visiting with friends and spendingtime with family, now we even havegreat grandchildren, puts projects onthe back burner. My husband and Ifeel blessed to still have each otherthrough 53 years of marriage. Godhas been good to us.

Dear WSA:Thank you for the 50 year certificate and check. It came

as a surprise. My father enrolled me as a member when Iwas a teen and I never realized that so much time had goneby.

My dad, John Lunka, was a very active member of WSA.He was an officer of Washington Lodge #32 in Clevelandfor many years and often was a delegate to the NationalConvention. A Colorado native, he loved to go “home” tomeet old friends and especially to see his three brothers,Anton, Frank and Joe.

Dad also enrolled our two daughters in WSA when theywere born and both of them were four-year recipients ofvery much appreciated WSA scholarships. Each graduatedsumma cum laud, Mary Louise from Franciscan Universityof Steubenville in 1998, and Ann Marie from Case WesternReserve University in 1999.

I taught school for many years before becoming a full-time mom and part-time writer of English workbooks forelementary and junior high students. More recently I havehelped write workbooks for adult ESL students.

My husband, Mike, is a retired computer programmer.We are very active in our church, especially in PerpetualAdoration. We travel some - mostly to visit our daughterwho lives in England. We have just become grandparentsand intend to spend a great deal of time with our newgrandson, Joseph.

tion of my fifty year membership in WSA. It broughtback memories from the 50’s when my aunt and uncle,Caroline & Frank Likar brought me down to Coloradofor the conventions.

I’ve spent 44 years of my adult life working in thestock brokerage business, thirty four of those years liv-ing in San Francisco. I moved back to my home stateof Minnesota in 1999 to be back with family and a lessstressful life. I just turned 65 in August and plan tocontinue working. I just love my job and can't imaginebeing away from this industry. I’ve even managed tomake a few wise investments for myself which willallow me to make my musical trips to New York andperformances at the Metropolitan Opera. My parents,dad (93) and mother (88), are still alive and we’vespent a lot of quality time together. I also have my sis-ter and her wonderful family in Minneapolis.

Life has been very good and I feel blessed to havetraveled and met so many interesting people. I hope allmembers of WSA can feel the same way.

Dear WSA:Your kindness and generosity in the past years have

helped the growth and expansion of the SlovenianLibrary beyond our belief. What a tribute it is to thefounding fathers, Alan L. Gornick and John A.Gornick, for having the wisdom and creativity tofound it. I have read in some of their historical articlesthat it was their desire that generations to come wouldbenefit from it. We, who are in the middle of it, arefeeling pride that the generations they spoke about arenow beginning to reap the benefits of their dream.

Reading the EVENTS DIARY (check us out on theweb at www.slovenianheritage.com) will give you anidea that their hopes are coming to fruition. The year2006 has been quite beneficial for the library ingrowth, but especially in awareness. On the days thatthe library is open we have more visitors than we canserve on an individual basis. That is good! The expo-sure has brought awareness to the point that we nowbenefit more by appointments and our researchavenues are needing expansion to accommodate them.What a good feeling that is.

Bob Blazich continues to be the Director ofResearch, assisted by Lou Skoff, Sharren (Miklich)Tilley and Charles (Pugel) Keen. Retiree, Florence(Mulholland) Snider helps with keeping files up todate and helps me with library organization. I continueto take care of communication and keep the calendarand the Accounts Receivable and Payable functional.

As a group, we hope that the Gornicks and dearAunt Mamie are looking down on us with a smile, andkeep US in THEIR prayers as we do THEM in OURS.

Everyone had a great time from up on the hills todown in the warming hut.

Chairman John Kogovsek called the meeting of the Board to order.Eight of nine Directors were present. Guests Honorary DirectorMehelich, Senior Systems Administrator Richard Perry, Vice-President of Operations Tina Scribner, Controller Tammy Kanaryand Asset Administrator Jack Hall were also present.

The Board performed the following actions:

• Approved the minutes of the meeting of the Board of Directors held July 8, 2006.

• Approved the 2006 third Quarter Statement of WSA.

• Approved the minutes of the Finance Committee and ratified the actions of the Finance Committee since the prior Board meeting.

• Approved the 2006 budget as amended.

• Approved the 2007 budget as presented.

• Approved, for the 2007 calendar year, that dividends on all non-1980 CSO life products shall be paid using the current scale of 3.5% of statutory reserves as of 12/31/06, and shall be calculated on the net certificate reserve value. Dividends shall be suspended for post-1980 CSO products forthe 2007 calendar year. The cash values of the affected certificates will continue to grow as per the contract guarantees.

• Approved the 2007 LAFP allocation per lodge based on a $15 per member per month allocationbased on the average attendance in 2006. (Additionally, subsidies for events shall not exceed $25/per member in any given month for any given lodge.)

• Approved the renewal of the LAIP for 2007, with a maximum budget of $6500 and with the qualifications and parameters as outlined in the lodge reference manual.
