Paul Klee

• Son of musicians; married to a musician– Born in Switzerland; lived and taught in Germany

• Decided to be an artist instead– Loved the use of color– Between 8000 and 9000 paintings in his life– Taught painting in Germany– Friends with Kandinsky (Man on a Horse)– Was eventually forced out of Germany by Nazis in WWII for

creating “substandard” art, and his art was hidden for many years

– Had a very unique style

Art does not have to be “accurate” to be “good”

Expressionism

Expressionism started in Germany in the early 1900’s. Its presents the world from a subjective perspective, distorting it radically for emotional effect in order to evoke moods or ideas. Expressionist artists sought to express meaning or emotional experience rather than physical reality.
