Presidentrsquos Message The year passed us in the blink of an eye It is truly amazing how much has been accomplished in so short a time Thatrsquos what happens when we all work together toward a common goal of providing a quality affordshyable education for our students

Of course the credit is shared From students faculty staff donors community partners and business leaders it takes everyone working together to reach our goals The report touches on many events and accomplishments Let me highlight a few

l Alice Adoga (lsquo11 alumna) returned to the College as keynote speaker for the PTK Honor Society Induction She has a true success story From PDCCC she went on to earn her bachelorrsquos degree from George Mason University and is now seeking a masterrsquos degree while she works full time as a Family Services Specialist

l The College and Foundation worked together to employ Lori Carter (lsquo04) another alumna as our Alumni Relations Associate Her task is to grow the relationship between alumni and their alma mater

l The many gifts and support we received from businesses Foundations and individuals Read more about the recipient of our 2014 Chancellorrsquos Award for Leadership in Philanthropy ndash Smithfield Foods

l Getting an education can change your life in many ways For instance Amanda Douglas and her mother Christine Wells made getting an education a family affair Not only did studying together bring them closer as the first in their family to earn college degrees it has changed the direction of their familiesrsquo future

l Dr Carl Vermeulen Microbiology Professor and several PDCCC students may positively impact global health through their original microbiology research on vaccines Ours were the only community college students to present at a respected statewide microbiology conference in Harrisonburg

So you see an education as well as the process of attaining it can benefit you for a lifetime Although I am retiring July 2015 I am committed to PDCCC and to a smooth transition as we enter the next VCCS Strategic Plan That plan called ldquoComplete 2021rdquo involves tripling the number of credentials we award We can stand proud of our PDCCC family and all that has been accomplished

When you look at Alice Adoga (lsquo11) you see a bright self-confident community leader who is ready to climb any mountain to reach her goals

Alice came to the US from Nigeria in 2007 to join her family A year later she graduated from Franklin High School and chose PDCCC to begin her college career While at the College she took advantage of the student life as a member of the Student Government Association (SGA) Student Support Services and Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society

In two short years Alice earned her associatersquos degree and continued to George

Department of Social Services and is earning her Masterrsquos degree in Human Services Counseling She is passionate about advocating for children and the community We asked Alice two questions and her answers are below

Why did you choose PDCCC PDCCCrsquos financial aid helped keep my education affordable Plus the campus is close to home Attending PDCCC saved time and helped me continue on to a 4-year college

What was special about your experience at PDCCC The College is like a small community It gave me a chance to get to know people well including the professors Because of the smaller class sizes the professors were able to encourage growth by targeting each

Mason University In 2013 studentrsquos strengths and weaknesses Alice reached two more milestones I was able to observe younger and her BA in Psychology and US older generations of students It Citizenship is a very encouraging friendly
