ACY has reinforced its support of the Martin County artificial reef program with the donation of BIG AL – a 69-foot steel tugboat deployed on February 24th as Martin County’s newest artificial reef. American Custom Yachts made a big splash during the 2010 Miami International Boat Show, thrilling anglers of all ages with its virtual fishing machine, while Bausch-American Towers and IMS American Marine Electronics impressed the big boys with the latest in tower technology and marine electronics. At the Billfish Expo, held at the Biscayne Bay Marriott, ACY President Dominick LaCombe joined a panel of experts representing the “who’s who” in custom boat building and fielded questions regarding yacht design and construction.

American Custom Yachts and its affiliates would like to thank everyone who took a turn on our virtual fishing machine during the show. For every angler who battled a virtual fish, The American Family of Companies made a donation to The Billfish Foundation to protect real fish around the world.

WENCH Undergoes Extreme Makeover at ACYRenamed and ready for adventure, the WENCH, a 73’ Donzi, enclosed-bridge sportfisherman, received an extreme makeover at ACY with the help of affiliates IMS American Marine Electronics, Bausch-American Towers and TCR American Custom Canvas – all under the watchful eye of Captain Dan Coffman. This extensive project involved refits from the tower down, including numerous interior modifications to accommodate upgraded appliances and electronics.

The bridge helm was completely reconstructed to accommodate new navigation components, including a Furuno™ 3-D black box system with a 25 kW radar, a 3 kW DFF3 digital sounder and a Class B AIS system. Additional components include twin 15” KEP™ monitors, a KEP™ Leviathan computer outfitted with Nobeltec™ navigation software, a KVH TB150 TracPhone™ and a Garmin™ 5215 touch screen back-up GPS chartplotter. The bridge refit included removing a built-in wine cooler and outfitting the cabinet with a pop-up 40” Samsung™ 8000 LCD TV. The bridge staircase

handrail was re-shaped to allow unobstructed viewing of the new TV. A new bridge headliner was also installed by TCR American.

In the salon, the existing tube TV was removed and the TV cabinet was modified to accommodate a pop-up 46” Samsung™ LCD TV and extra storage. New carpet was installed, and TCR American reupholstered the sofa and seating. ACY redesigned the galley to accommodate a new Gaggenau™ grill cooktop and replaced the existing dishwasher with a wine cooler. The galley counter was removed and refitted with custom slots for cutlery. Upgrades continued into the master stateroom where the cabinets were modified to fit a Sony Bravia™ LCD TV.

IMS outfitted the WENCH with Blu-ray Disc™ players and Denon™ 1910 receivers in both the bridge and salon and JL Audio™ speakers throughout the boat. IMS and ACY teamed up to design a pair of unique custom bow-facing speaker boxes mounted on the deckhouse.

Exterior upgrades included a custom–molded BAT buggy top to accommodate a new satellite dome, and a new tower standing platform with molded spreader lights. ACY modified the cockpit covering

boards, installed a new cockpit sole, upgraded the LED lights on the mezzanine and aft deck, and installed new underwater lights and a new bow thruster. The vessel also received a full transom paint and lettering.

While some might question whether the name WENCH suits a boat this pretty, all would agree that the transformation is truly a work of art.

ACY created an innovative new exhaust system on the 66’ Hines Farley TRIPLE CROWN. Instead of dropping the exhaust at the transom, this unique system takes the exhaust through the hull just aft of the engines with built-in bypasses at the waterline for low speed operation and generator exhaust.

ACY provided bottom maintenance and relocated the waterline on FREEDOM, a classic 104’ Trumpy motoryacht sporting a familiar name.

BEYOND CAPRICORN, a 76’ Nordhavn long-range expedition yacht, took a break in its busy travel itinerary for engine and generator service, an engine room ventilation system upgrade, and inspection and maintenance of the fire safety system, life rafts and electronics. ACY also performed a full bottom job and a number of minor warranty service repairs. It was a pleasure having Captain Todd and Maree Rapley as our guests. We wish them the best of luck on their next far-flung adventure.

The ACY65 BLACK GOLD came home for a complete bottom strip, prime and paint, along with routine service and maintenance. Work included modifying the automatic salon door operation and re-insulating the chill water system.

ACY performed a complete refit of both gray water and black water sanitary systems aboard the NIKITA, a 71’ custom motoryacht designed by naval architect Chuck Paine and built in New Zealand by Diverse Projects. ACY also outfitted the boat with a new fire suppression system, new cutlass bearings and a full bottom job.

Q: I am in the process of gearing up my boat for long-range travel to exotic fishing grounds well off the beaten path. Due to my limited fuel capacity, I am considering either going with a yacht transport company or trying to hook up with a mother ship. Are there any special features you recommend to outfit my boat?

YD: You can ship your boat via a yacht transport company to many distant ports of call within proximity to great fishing. Once there, you will, of course, need to make sure your tanks are completely filled and your boat is fully provisioned to maximize your fishing time. You can also take advantage of portable fuel tanks or bladders that can be stored in the cockpit or fit in empty fish boxes to extend your fuel capacity; however, your range will still be limited by the amount of fuel you can carry. Another option is to coordinate your plans with a mother ship that can tow your vessel to the fishing grounds and provide fuel, water and other accommodations once you are there. For this plan to work successfully, your boat should be outfitted with a towing eye, usually affixed directly to your boat’s stem and reinforced to handle the stress from constant wave action. Contact boat yards in your area to see who is best equipped to handle the job and ensure they have the experience to do it correctly.
