CENTER VALLEY, Pa. A resurgence for one of the top programs in the Pa- triot League and outstanding perfor- mances from three individuals head- lined the 2012 football season. Colgate won its rst League Ɵtle since 2008, and seventh overall, by recover- ing from a 1-3 start with a seven-game winning streak that included an un- beaten run through the Patriot League. The Raiders were led by junior quar- terback Gavin McCarney, who nished Ōh in the Walter Payton Award voƟng and earned All-America honors. McCarney wasn’t the only name to remember, as Georgetown linebacker Robert McCabe and Fordham place- kicker/punter Patrick Murray turned in outstanding senior seasons. CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — A resurgence for one of the top programs in the Pa-triot League and outstanding perfor-mances from three individuals head-lined the 2012 football season.

Colgate won its fi rst League tle since 2008, and seventh overall, by recover-ing from a 1-3 start with a seven-game winning streak that included an un-beaten run through the Patriot League. The Raiders were led by junior quar-terback Gavin McCarney, who fi nished fi h in the Walter Payton Award vo ng and earned All-America honors.

McCarney wasn’t the only name to remember, as Georgetown linebacker Robert McCabe and Fordham place-kicker/punter Patrick Murray turned in outstanding senior seasons. McCabe was a fi rst-team All-American from three organiza ons and placed fourth for the Buck Buchanan Award, while Murray earned consensus fi rst-team All-America status.

Lehigh also enjoyed an outstanding year with its third-straight 10-win sea-son, though the Mountain Hawks were le out of the FCS postseason. Lehigh fi nished at No. 14/16 in the na onal poll, while Colgate came in at No. 25 to give the Patriot League mul ple teams in the fi nal rankings for the fi rst me since 2009.

Patriot League Notebook COLGATE RUNS ITS WAY TO THE PATRIOT LEAGUE TITLEColgate sat with a 1-3 record through four games, but the Raiders turned it on from there to win their fi nal seven contests and capture the 2012 Patriot League Football championship. It was Colgate’s seventh League tle, and fi rst since 2008. Col-gate fi nished in the top fi ve na onally in rushing, total and scoring off ense, and scored 35 points or more in nine consecu ve contests entering the postseason.

LEHIGH, COLGATE RANKED IN FINAL FCS TOP 25For the fi rst me since 2009, mul ple Patriot League teams were ranked in the fi nal Football Championship Subdivision polls as Lehigh came in the top 20 in both na onal rankings and Colgate was the No. 25 team in The Sports Network poll. The Mountain Hawks earned the No. 14 ranking in the FCS Coaches Poll, and No. 16 in The Sports Network top 25. Lehigh fi nishes in the polls for the third straight season a er going 10-1 for the year. The Mountain Hawks were le out of the postseason despite their 10-1 fi nish. The Raiders were ranked in the fi nal poll for the fi rst me since 2009, when Holy Cross fi nished at No. 14 in both na onal rankings while Colgate was at No. 20/21 and Lafaye e was No. 24/25. A Patriot League team has now fi nished in the top 15 of at least one na onal poll in four consecu ve seasons.

McCARNEY, McCABE AND MURRAY THE NAMES TO REMEMBER FROM 2012It was a good season to have an “M” at the start of your last name in the Patriot League as Colgate quarterback Gavin McCarney, Georgetown linebacker Robert McCabe and Fordham placekicker/punter Patrick Murray had memorable years. McCarney fi nished fi h in the Walter Payton Award vo ng and earned second-team All-America honors from The Sports Network and third-team from the Associated Press. McCabe was the fourth-place fi nisher for the Buck Buchanan Award, the ECAC Defensive Player of the Year and a fi rst-team All-American from The Sports Network, AP and American Football Coaches Associa on. Murray was the 10th Patriot Leaguer to earn consensus All-America honors as he was a fi rst-team pick by all four major awarding organiza ons, adding the Walter Camp to the Sports Network, AP and AFCA. He was also named the Fred Mitchell Award winner as the top placekicker outside the Football Bowl Subdivision.

LOONEY LEADS PATRIOT LEAGUERS HONORED FOR WORK IN THE CLASSROOMColgate’s Chris Looney was named the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and con nued to receive praise for his success on the fi eld and classroom as a fi rst-team Capital One Academic All-American and one of six fi nalists for two post-graduate scholarships given out by the FCS Athle c Directors Associa on. Looney was one of fi ve Patriot Leaguer named FCS ADA Academic All-Stars along with Lafaye e’s Mark Ross and Brad Bormann, Fordham’s Patrick Murray and Lehigh’s Zach Barket, who also joined Looney as a Capital One Academic All-American with a third-team pick. Looney, Ross and Barket were named to the College Sports Journal All-Academic Team along with Lehigh’s Ryan Spadola and Lafaye e’s Greg Kessel.

MORE POSTSEASON HONORSColgate’s Jordan McCord and Ryan Risch concluded their senior seasons as All-Americans, receiving third-team praise from The Sports Network. Ten Patriot Leaguers received All-Star selec ons from the ECAC, with Murray, McCarney, McCabe and McCord on the list along with Lehigh off ensive lineman Mike Vuono, defensive lineman Sajjad Chagani and linebacker Billy Bokyo, Georgetown defensive back Jeremy Moore, Bucknell defensive lineman Samuel Oyekoya and Holy Cross return spe-cialist Kalif Raymond. Murray was honored as both the placekicker and punter by the ECAC.

SPADOLA, McCABE AIM TO CONTINUE CAREERS PROFESSIONALLYLehigh’s Ryan Spadola and Georgetown’s Robert McCabe have opportuni es to impress scouts ahead of April’s NFL Dra . Spadola will play in the Texas vs. The Na on game on Feb. 2 and compete in the NFL combine later in the month, while McCabe will compete in the East-West Shrine Game on Saturday. Spadola fi nished second in Patriot League history in both recep ons and receiving yards, while McCabe stands fi h all- me in tackles.

PATRIOT LEAGUERS FINISH HIGH IN FCS STATISTICSMul ple Patriot Leaguers fi nished at or near the top of FCS sta s cs. Fordham’s Patrick Murray was fi rst in fi eld goals made per game, and second in the na on in pun ng average. Georgetown’s Robert McCabe easily fi nished at the top spot in tackles per game, while Colgate’s Gavin McCarney tops the charts in scoring just ahead of teammate Jordan McCord.. Fordham’s Michael Mar n and Georgetown’s Jeremy Moore were ed for the FCS lead in fumbles forced and recovered, respec vely.

2012 Patriot League Major Awards O P YGAVIN McCARNEY, COLGATE Jr., QBMcCarney fi nished the year comple ng 159-of-256 passes for 2,372 yards with 16 touchdowns and eight intercep ons and rushing 193 mes for 1,406 yards and 23 touchdowns. He led the na on in scoring with 11.67 points per game and was fourth in the FCS in points responsible for, eighth in passing effi ciency, ninth in total off ense and 12th in rushing. McCarney set a Patriot League single-season record for rushing yards by a quarterback, with his 288-yard performance against Lafaye e on Nov. 3 standing as the second-best rushing day by any player in Patriot League history. He led Colgate to a top-fi ve mark na onally in rushing, total and scoring off ense, and the Raiders averaged 49.3 points and 576.8 yards of total off ense per game during Patriot League play. McCarney fi nished fi h in the vo ng for the Walter Payton Award.

D P YROBERT McCABE, GEORGETOWN Sr., LBMcCabe was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year and a fi rst-team All-Patriot League selec on at line-backer a er leading the na on in tackles with 159, fi nishing the regular season with 28 more than any other FCS player. He fi nished fourth in the vo ng for the Buck Buchanan Award. McCabe also added 14.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks for the season to wrap up one of the top careers for a defensive player in Patriot League history. He concludes his me at George-town with a school-record 407 tackles, placing him ed for fi h in Patriot League history with the top mark for any player since 1997. His 159 tackles this season also stand ed for fourth in League annals and mark the highest total for any player since 1995. McCabe had 19 consecu ve games with double-digit tackles to fi nish his career.

C YDICK BIDDLE, COLGATEBiddle wins his fi h Patriot League Coach of the Year award, more than any other coach in League history. It came as the 17th year head coach led Colgate to its seventh Patriot League tle during his tenure. Colgate got off to a 1-3 start, but the Raiders entered the postseason on a seven-game win streak and scored 35 points or more in nine consecu ve contests. Colgate fi nished in the top fi ve na onally in rushing, total and scoring off ense as the Raiders rolled to points and yards all season. Colgate won its Patriot League games in decisive fashion as it took down Holy Cross (51-35), Georgetown (57-36), Bucknell (47-33) and Lafaye e (65-41) before winning at Lehigh (35-24) to secure the League tle and an undefeated Patriot League campaign on Nov. 10. The Raiders completed an undefeated run against Patriot League opponents with a 41-39 victory at Fordham on Saturday. It was Colgate’s fi rst Patriot League tle and fi rst undefeated League campaign since 2008.

R YJAMEL SMITH, LAFAYETTE Fr., WR/RSSmith made an impact as a wide receiver and return specialist for Lafaye e. The freshman was the team’s second-leading receiver with 38 recep ons for 291 yards and two touchdowns, and fi nished sixth in the na on in punt return average as he totaled 15 returns for 190 yards (12.7 avg) for the season. Smith came on strong in the fi nal two weeks of the season with 14 recep ons for 118 yards and two touchdowns.

S -A YCHRIS LOONEY, COLGATE Sr., WRLooney helped Colgate to the Patriot League tle and a berth in the NCAA Division I Football Championship by recording 43 recep ons for 776 yards and six touchdowns to play a key role in the team’s off ense which was in the top fi ve na onally in both scoring and total yardage. Looney earned a second-team All-Patriot League selec on. An Interna onal Rela ons & History major, Looney carries a cumula ve grade-point average of 3.90 in his senior year at Colgate. He has received the Colgate University Dean’s Award for Excellence and been placed on the school’s Athle cs Honor Roll four mes apiece. He is a Charles A. Dana Scholar for “superior achievement as well as demonstrated leadership in the college community.” Looney has done plenty of work off the fi eld in his me in Hamilton. He has been part of the Colgate University Leadership Academy for three years and is an Execu ve Board Member for Upli ing Athletes, helping to raise more than $15,000 for Ependymoma Research. He also par cipated in events for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, breast cancer and families of cancer vic ms and served as a mentor for fi h-grade students on the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Looney was also recognized as a fi rst-team Capital One Academic All-American and FCS ADA Academic All-Star, and is up for one of two post-graduate scholarships from the FCS ADA.

Fordham had 11 selec ons to the All-Patriot League team, tying Lehigh for the most in the League...The Rams also shared League honors with seven fi rst-team picks, with Koonce at running back, Wetzel at wide receiver, ght end Dan Light, off ensive lineman Lloyd Morrison, Mar n at linebacker and Murray as both the placekicker and punter...On the second team, Chris Watkins was on the off ensive line, Wetzel at return specialist, Nick Womack made it on the defensive line and Ian Williams was at defensive back...Murray, Light and Brendan Melanophy were all named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team...Murray had one of the best seasons for a fi eld goal kicker in FCS history, and was honored for it with mul ple awards in the off season...He became the 10th consensus All-American in Patriot League history, and eighth with consensus fi rst-team status, as he made the lists from Sports Network, Associated Press, Walter Camp and AFCA... Murray was named the 2012 Fred Mitchell Award winner as the top placekicker from the FCS, Division II, Division III, NAIA or NJCAA and also received the FCS Placekicker of the Year award from College Football Performance Awards...He was named an ECAC All-Star as both a punter and placekicker...He went 25-of-30 to sha er the single-season Patriot League record of 19 made fi eld goals and come within just one of the FCS record...He was also honored as an FCS ADA Academic All-Star.

G The Hoyas missed fi nishing over .500 for the second year in a row by one game, but their season will be most remembered for the play of senior linebacker Robert McCabe...McCabe was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year and ECAC Defensive Player of the Year and fi nished fourth in the vo ng for the Buck Buchanan Award as the Top Defensive Player in the FCS...He was named a fi rst-team All-American by The Sports Network and Associated Press as well as the AFCA...McCabe fi nished the year with 159 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks....The 159 tackles were 28 more than any other FCS player at the end of the regular season, and edfor fourth in League history as the top mark for any player in a single season since 1995...He fi nishes his career with 407 tackles, becoming the fi rst Hoya to break 400 career tackles and the fi rst Patriot Leaguer to do it since 1997...McCabe will play in the East-West Shrine Game on Saturday...McCabe was one of three Hoyas on the fi rst-team All-Patriot League de-fense along with linebacker Dus n Wharton and defensive back Jeremy Moore, who made the team for the third year in a row...On the second team, running back Nick Campanella, wide receiver Kevin Macari and off ensive lineman James Spaly all represented the Hoyas....Senior Donald Rhodes made the Academic All-Patriot League squad.

H C A tough season ended on a posi ve note with a 24-0 victory at Georgetown on Nov. 17..Holy Cross fi nished 2-9, though fi ve of the losses came by four points or less on a scoregiven up in the fi nal minutes...Holy Cross had eight All-Patriot League selec ons, including freshman return specialist Kalif Raymond on the fi rst team...Second-team picks included wide receiver Gerald Mistre a, ght end Alex Schneider, off ensive lineman Sean Whited, defensive lineman Gary Acquah, defensive back Tom Mannix and John Macomber as both the punter and placekicker...Mannix, Macomber and Sam Jones each made the Academic All-Patriot League Team...Raymond was later named as the return specialist on the ECAC All-Star Team.

L The Leopards dropped the fi nal four games of the season to fi nish the year at 5-6...Wide receiver Mark Ross had an outstanding junior season with 75 recep ons for 1,030 yards and 10 touchdowns to earn fi rst-team All-Patriot League honors, and was also recognized for his work in the classroom as an Academic All-Patriot League pick and FCS ADA Academic All-Star...Rick Lyster joined Ross as a fi rst-team All-Patriot League pick, while Jamel Smithreceived the Patriot League Rookie of the Year award for his play at wide receiver and in the return game....Lafaye e’s second-team All-Patriot League selec ons included Ross Scheuerman at running back, Luke Chiarolanziao on the off ensive line and Kyni Sco , Darius Saff ord and Jared Roberts in the defensive backfi eld...Ross, Brad Bormann and Greg Kessel were named to the Academic All-Patriot League Team, with Bormann also joining Ross as an FCS Academic All-Star.

L Despite fi nishing with a 10-1 record, Lehigh was le out of the NCAA Division I FootballChampionship...The Mountain Hawks were the highest-ranked team to miss the fi eld, and ended theyear ranked at No. 14 in the FCS Coaches Poll and No. 16 in The Sports Network top 25...Lehigh endsthe season ranked for a 31st consecu ve me, and was one of two one-loss teams in the countryalong with na onal champion North Dakota State... They fi nished a third consecu ve season with at least 10 victories and a top-15 ranking... The Mountain Hawks had a League-high 11 student-athletes named to the All-Patriot League Team including fi rst-team selec ons for wide receiver Ryan Spadola, of-fensive lineman Mike Vuono, defensive linemen Tom Bianchi and Sajjad Chagani, linebacker Billy Boyko and defensive backs Billy O’Brien and Gabe Johnson..Quarterback Mike Colvin, off ensive lineman Ned Daryoush and linebackers Sam Loughery and Nigel Muhammad made the second team...Vuono, Chagani and Boyko followed those selec ons with spots on the ECAC All-Star Team...Academic All-Patriot League team honors went to Spadola and running back Zach Barket, who was also named a third-team Capital One Academic All-American and FCS Academic All-Star...Spadola concluded his outstand-ing career in second place in Patriot League history in recep ons and receiving yardage, and will aim for a goal of playing professionally as he competes at the Texas vs. The Na on game and NFL Combine next month.
