Sydney Morgan

Researcher

University of British Columbia

Sydney Morgan is a PhD Student at the University of British Columbia Okanagan. She completed her Bachelors Science with Honors

in microbiology from UBC Okanagan in 2014. Her research focuses on identifying the yeasts conducting spontaneous fermentations

of different grape varietals at multiple wineries. The findings of her current research demonstrate that different concentrations of

sulfur dioxide addition at crush result in different Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain compositions during fermentation. Her research

also supports the findings of the Durall lab that commercial strains dominate spontaneous fermentations at commercial wineries,

regardless of the concentration of sulfur dioxide added. Sydney’s research is supported by UBC, the National Science and Engineering

Research Council (NSERC) and the American Society for Enology and Viticulture (ASEV).

Shea Vineyard and Shea Wine Cellars

was soon recognized and sought out by premier winemakers in both Oregon and California. In 1996, the Sheas produced their first

barrel of wine for their own label, Shea Wine Cellars. While 75% of Shea Vineyard fruit is still sold to 20 other wineries, the Sheas

have grown their own production to 6,500 cases of exceptional Pinot noir and 350 cases of elegant Chardonnay, all from fruit grown at

Shea Vineyard.

Associate Professor, Horticultural Entomologist, Department of Horticulture

Oregon State University

Vaughn Walton, Associate Professor of Horticulture Entomologist at Oregon State University works on economically important pests,

with the aim to provide environmentally sustainable and minimal impact pest management strategies for agriculturalists in Oregon and

further afield. Mutiple techniques are used in a whole-system approach to obtain sustainble means of production.

In order to obtain this goal, new knowledge obtained from detailed insect physiological, biological, behavioral, ecological and

their most vulnerable. These control strategies have historically focused on biological control, mating disruption and conventional

synthetic pesticides.

Ken Wright

Owner and Winemaker

Ken Wright Cellars

The seed for a career in wine was planted squarely in Bourbon country of Lexington, Kentucky. While waiting tables to put himself

through school, Ken was exposed to fine wines from regions around the world. The passion became avocation when Ken left the

Bluegrass State to attend enology and viticulture classes at UC Davis. Eight years were spent winemaking in Monterey County of

California’s central coast. Friends from the Willamette Valley piqued Ken’s interest in the region when they would visit and a trip to

the Dundee Hills in 1976 convinced him that this was where the finest Pinot noir in North America was being grown. In 1986, with

family, belongings and 10 barrels in tow, Ken moved to the valley to begin his career in the wine industry.

More than 36 years of winemaking has taught Ken a simple truth: source is everything. Located in rural Carlton, Ken Wright Cellars
