Healthwatch Kingston
Health and Social Care Champion
What is Healthwatch Kingston? • A local body which acts as a watchdog for health and
social care services
• It covers all health and social care, including hospitals, GP
surgeries, adult / children’s services, mental health services,
care homes, dentists and opticians
• It works together with local health and social care providers, the
council, the Kingston CCG and Kingston Hospital to help improve
services for local people
• Works independently from Kingston Council, the CCG and other
health providers
• A social enterprise, limited by guarantee and non-profit making
What is Healthwatch Kingston?
• We have a Board of Directors who set the work priorities, guided by
the input of our affiliates
• The work that we do is scrutinised by our affiliates – local people
who use health and social care services in Kingston
• We have statutory powers, so we are listened to and our
recommendations are taken seriously
• Our operations are managed by Parkwood Healthcare
• We are funded by the Department of Health through a local
contract commissioned by Kingston Council
What does Healthwatch do?
• Gathers information and evidence about health and social care
services from local people through surveys, interviews, public
meetings and feedback
• Passes evidence on to local providers and commissioners to
improve health and social care services in Kingston
• Gives feedback to the Health & Wellbeing Board,
Healthwatch England and the Care Quality Commission
• Carries out visits known as ‘Enter & View’ to investigate
areas of concern
• Focuses on three key areas: Mental Health, Hospital
Services and Primary Care & Community Services
• Provides a comprehensive signposting service
Joint working with Healthwatch
• We are currently in discussions with the council to be the host
organisation for the Learning Disability Parliament.
• We are in discussions to set up a Junior Healthwatch. National charity
The Challenge Network has given us ideas about a programme to
interact with local teenagers in helping us with promotion and surveys.
• Healthwatch is represented on many boards/committees such as the
Joint Strategic Needs Assessment board, Kingston’s Carers Network
Partnership Board, the Health and Wellbeing Board, KCCG governing
board etc.
• Several of our active affiliates are involved with Kingston Hospital, on
various boards such as Patient Led Assessments of the Care Environment
(PLACE) where checks are carried out at the hospital.
Achievements 2013/14
• We have increased our membership by over 25% since April 2013.
• We have raised the profile of concerns around the NHS 111 out of hours
services, and informed all local GP’s on how to make a complaint.
• Played a key role with regard to consultations about The Better Care Fund,
Social Care Directory and Financial Assessment Tool.
• We have over 30 Active/Affiliate members, who carry out a lot of
Healthwatch work plans.
• Healthwatch has conducted 98 activities since April 2013, engaging with 2716
individuals. Presentation delivered to Elders Empowerment Programme, 12
people joined our membership. Supported a person who is from the Korean
community to make a complaint to her local GP surgery.
• We have delivered one Enter & View visit to Kingston Hospital and have two
more planned.

website, social media and volunteer recruitment.
Here’s a snapshot of what we do...
Why should local people get involved?
Healthwatch Kingston shapes and improve the services that we all use
We're an open organisation and want to gather people’s feedback
– we’re easy to talk to
As much as want to know about poor service – we also want to know
about the best
We use evidence to build a true picture of services in the borough of Kingston
Volunteering for Healthwatch
• We work on a tight budget, so volunteers are hugely important to
our organisation – we can’t thank you enough!
• We need people from all walks of life with different skills to help
build a strong team
• We hope that volunteers find their work with us rewarding and that
they take away a sense of satisfaction
• We are always happy to act as referee for a volunteer
