Starting over really takes courage. It
takes courage to believe that
tomorrow is a new day. To risk the
comfort of what we know and step out
into something new requires great
strength.
I often marvel at those who come to
workshops or participate in our skills
training programs. It is a new world.
They are doing and learning new
things that they have never attempted
before.
Learning and growing stretch us. And
just like physical exercise there can be
healthy pain. We all reach a point
where we must crash through our
quitting point. That is the moment
when we literally break free of the
bonds that have held us back. We
realize in that moment that our
yesterdays do not define our
tomorrows.
Often the journey is a struggle and
sometimes falling down is part of it.
But getting up again to once again
embark, to set sail is the essence of
courage.
Each day we celebrate those who apply
for new jobs, and walk into an
interview or face the first day in a new
job. There is a palpable fear of the
unknown but their courage inspires us.

n December 2015 I completed mystudies at Algoma University, thenquickly moved back to live with myfamily here in London. I wasstruggling, sending my resumeseverywhere in Canada looking forjobs, and there was no feedback,no interview or even phone calls.
During school my family’s mainsource of income was an OSAP loan. Then we moved onto OntarioWorks. With a high level ofpersonal and school debts, it wasvery painful that the governmentassistance was not enough to coverour cost of living.
I
SAMUEL
I was referred to Pathways by myOntario Works Case Worker. But Ialso found out about Pathways onthe internet when I was alwaysconstantly searching for jobs andemployment agencies in the Londonarea.
I will never forget the level ofencouragement and caring that Ireceived from the Pathwaysprofessionals, both junior andsenior staff. I took my trainingcourses and sessions seriously –without missing any days going tothe training centre. It wasincredibly amazing to have such aprofessional agency.
"During my trainingsessions, I developeda sense of confidenceand more and more Iknew that I was at theright place at theright time.”
During my training sessions, Ideveloped a sense of confidenceand more and more I knew that Iwas at the right place at the righttime, and I was also very thankfulthat Ontario Works had such aconnection with PathwaysEmployment Agency. I was gettingenormous coaching from allcounsellors, but Bob and Sandiwere outstanding.

CURRENT ROLE
Workshop Attendee& EmploymentPlacement Participant
Last December Samuel didn 't have a job - today he works for 3M. "This Christmas all ofour kids will get gifts , and I am also certain that everyone will smile now"
My job at 3M is huge and means a lot to my family. It ishard to explain to kids when parents aren’t working,or when a parent keeps saying “no” when a child asksfor his/ her favourite toy or place to go. It goes toshow how easily families can be transformed andhappier when there are jobs in the area.
We are so blessed that I have found a job within aclose distance and that is very wonderful, because itkeeps us close and secure every day. Daddy is havingdinner with everyone everyday – what a joy forchildren and their mom!
SAMUEL'S STORY FEATURE CONTINUED
What is Different this Christmas?
"It is hard to explain to kids whenparents aren't working..."
There is always goingto be a brighter futureif you keep going.
– Remember there must beanother young family like yoursgoing through an enormousamount of difficulties and stresslooking for a job. My humble wish isthat employment opportunities inthe local area improve so thatyoung people and young familiescan follow their dreams.
Today Samuel Works at 3M
Well for sure all of our kids will get gifts, and I am alsocertain that everyone will smile now. They havealready gotten one thing they had asked me for – aSummer Vacation with their Grandma and cousins inAtlanta Georgia. Lots of places were visited and lotsof pictures were sent back to me in Canada.
To my Wife Viola...
My wife Viola is a rock and the solid back bone gluingmy family together. I could have never done things theway I envision for my family without her taking care ofour three adorable children: Chiengkuach, Yom andAleer. I owe her a big thank you and our success in life.
My Takeaway
Christmas 2016!
After I got my job, I always think ofhow young families struggle whenthere is scarcity of jobs in the area.Student debt is another challengingfactor .
This year Samuel and Viola will be able to give their childrenseveral of the gifts they asked for!
"This Christmas all of our kids will get gifts... "
"I greatly appreciate how youare helping me ACHIEVEwhat I actually want toachieve in life. "
