At the recent Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association Conference, the Parramore Comprehensive Plan won the 2015 Award of Excellence in the Neighborhood Planning Category.

The City of Orlando, in collaboration with VHB, Enhance Central Florida, and Pathways for Parramore, focused the planning process around Healthy Community Design. The plan emphasizes community health, not just physical environment.

The City extends heartfelt thanks for community members and leaders that worked so tirelessly on this project, including District 5 City Commissioner Regina I. Hill for her leadership and support throughout the planning process.

As part of the City’s continued efforts to transform our urban environment and make our City more liveable and sustainable, City Council recently approved a new partnership with Growing Orlando, a new non-profit urban farm initiative, to develop our first urban garden, which will be located in the Parramore neighborhood.

Growing Orlando will use this garden site to grow food that will be made available for purchase to our residents at the Orlando Farmers Market and to local restaurants. Growing Orlando will also host workshops and learning opportunities for residents to learn how to grow for themselves, learn about food and health and how to grow for others.

Local food production, like this urban garden, furthers the City’s sustainability goals by reducing total miles that food needs to travel, decreasing fossil fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, local farms like this use fewer pesticides and have an overall smaller environmental impact from runoff, water usage and production techniques.

Growing Orlando plans to open the urban garden at 626 W. South St. site early 2016. To learn more, visit growingorlando.org.

A Parramore native, Vencina “Vinnie” Cannady never thought of leaving the area she grew up in. Her family owned a business in the neighborhood, and she describes the community as being part of her heritage. Today, after living in Parramore for more than 60 years, Cannady is the Carter Street Neighborhood Association President. The City spoke to Cannady about her commitment to the Carter Street Neighborhood.

What do you love about your neighborhood?I love the history of the neighborhood. There is a lot of sentimental value with the people that live there. It is part of my childhood. It means a lot to live there.

What do you wish other people knew about your neighborhood?Parramore residents have pride. The neighbors are caring and loving. Parramore is more than what you see on the television. There are many lifelong residents. Parramore is also a diverse area. There are all different cultures and races there.

What value does the Carter Street Neighborhood Association add to the neighborhood? The association helps to promote self pride. People are beginning to care about the neighborhood. Other residents are seeing the change for the good and wanting to be part of it. The association has been developing relationships and partnerships with City departments. This is crucial to success.

Why should your neighbors get involved in the Carter Street Neighborhood Association?Getting involved in the association is important because it is their community and they need to care about where they live. The association provides a means to do this.

The Parramore community has several neighborhood associations including Callahan, Terry Avenue Townhomes, Jackson Court, Villas at Carver Park, and the newly reorganized Carter Street Neighborhood Association. These associations know the importance of uniting their neighborhood. For more information on getting involved in your neighborhood association, contact the Office of Communications and Neighborhood Relations at 407.246.2169.

The Dare to Dream project is a collaborative effort between Parramore Kidz Zone (PKZ), University of Central Florida CREATE - Center for Research, and Education in Arts, Technology, and Entertainment (UCF CREATE) and H. J. High Construction. Similar to a project in the Mills 50 District, this community-based initiative focuses on improving six traffic light boxes located in the Parramore neighborhood through art.

Under the theme of “Dare to Dream,” students living in Parramore were asked to dream about what they would like to see in their neighborhood through artwork. Providing artistic direction, UCF CREATE was able to take the art and generate a computer model which is then used as a guide to paint the traffic light boxes.

H.J. High Construction, a Parramore based construction firm, was instrumental in securing the necessary permits to allow painting and has also generously agreed to provide the materials needed to paint the boxes.

The team which includes students from PKZ, along with Art instructors from UCF CREATE and employees from H.J. High Construction have been busy working on cleaning and painting the first traffic light box which is located on the corner of N. Westmoreland Dr. and W. Robinson St. Five additional boxes are scheduled to be painted over the course of the next few months. For more information, contact Glenn Providence at [email protected].

The City of Orlando is committed and focused on revitalizing the historic Parramore neighborhood. Every day, the City strives to make the area more livable for everyone.

Fundamental to the success of Parramore is to ensure affordable housing options for all of our residents.

On Thursday, November 5, the City announced it is seeking a partner to bring a new mixed-income residential project to Parramore, across from ZL Riley Park. The vision includes a mix of apartments and townhomes creating a more than six-acre family-oriented development with community-building amenities. This project is key in ensuring that the residents of Parramore today can continue to call Parramore home tomorrow.

The Parramore Comprehensive Neighborhood Plan outlines efforts for growing a vibrant Parramore community and increasing housing opportunities, specifically those that support mixed income.

This community enhancement will assist in fostering community development that will strengthen the surrounding neighborhoods and serve as a catalyst for revitalization in Parramore.
