NATIONAL TREASURE With the sequel in cinemas it’s a good
time to revisit the original from 2004. Nicholas Cage plays Ben Gates who comes from a family of treasure hunters. Following clues, he gets closer and closer to the treasure, all the while hounded by the bad guys who are determined to beat him to it by using his own clues. Filled with plot twists and turns, excitement and intrigue, this is a great family adventure movie. The Library will have the sequel – National Treasure: Book of Secrets – available on DVD later in the year, in case you miss it at the movies.
DID YOU KNOW?From February 2008 the Ian Matheson City Archives have increased their open-
ing hours and are now open 10-5pm. So remember to pop in for any local history research related needs. We have PNCC archives and the archives of certain local businesses, organisations and individ-uals. We may be able to help. Find us on the Ground Floor of the City Library.
A morning with... JACK REGISTER
On Thursday, February 28 Jack Register, Palmerston North artist, will be the inaugural speaker at our ‘A Morning with…’ programme.
To be held on the last Thursday of each month through to November, the programme is especially for our retired and senior library members, although anyone is most welcome to attend. We aim to provide a variety of interesting and stimulating speakers, as well as other entertainment, throughout the year.
Jack Register will begin his talk at 11am, but will be wielding a paintbrush before-hand! Tea and coffee will be available from 10.30am in the Large Print Living Room of the Fiction Zone. Please join us.

Awapuni Library
20th Birthday CelebrationsAwapuni Branch Library celebrated it’s 20th year of service in November, 2007. Located in College Street, the branch has undergone two major re-vamps and is now a large, bright and comfortable place with many regular users enjoying its easy parking and convenience. Present at the afternoon tea to celebrate the anniversary were Mayor Jonno Naylor and jazz combo, the Fred Potter trio. The first branch librarian, Mary Saxby, was also present for the afternoon – Mary is now a cataloguer in the Central Library.
Mobile Library ~ 40 years in serviceOn May 22, 1967, the Mobile Library service to Palmerston North began, using a hired, converted caravan towed by the library’s Leyland van. As the caravan was not originally designed to carry the weight of the stock it held (1800 books), continued use led to many modifications. After five and a half years' heavy haulage, the caravan's life was coming to an end and a replacement was sought.
A purpose-built bus was purchased in November, 1973. The new bus carried 3000 books, 1200 more than the old caravan. The coachwork was done in Auckland, and the on-the-road cost was $17,500. At the time the mobile was the largest of its type in New Zealand.
The current bus (an even larger model) was brought into service in October, 1989, and continues bringing the Library to the doors of residents and to schools in and around Palmerston North, issuing more than 63,000 items a year.

The Mountain
I am here beside my brother, Terror.I am the place of human error.
I am beauty and cloud, and I am sorrow;I am tears which you will weep tomorrow.
I am the sky and the exhausting gale.I am the place of ice. I am the debris trail.
I am as far as you can see.I am the place of memory.
And I am still a hand, a fingertip, a ring.I am what there is no forgetting.
I am the one with truly broken heart.I watched them fall, and freeze, and break apart.
The Dead
We fell.
Yet we were loved and we are lifted.
We froze.
Yet we were loved and we are warm.
We broke apart.
Yet we are here and we are whole.
From Lifted by Bill ManhireVictoria University Press 2004. Poet laureate Bill Manhire wrote the poem “Erebus Voices” especially for Sir Edmund Hillary to read at the commemorative service held at Scott Base for the 25th anniversary of the Erebus Tragedy.

The newest branch library in Palmerston North will open on Saturday, February 9, 2008.
The Highbury Branch is on Monrad Park, with a large car park accessed off Highbury Avenue. The day will start with a blessing at 10am, followed by an Official Opening and morning tea. There will be Whanau entertainment on Monrad Park held in conjuction with the Highbury Whanau Resource Centre.
Renovation began on the building – the former home of the Resource Centre – a little over eight weeks ago. The abandoned and unloved prefab has been turned into a vibrant and welcoming library, with gorgeous colours and a very special issues desk.
Usual open hours will start on Monday, February 11. The new branch’s hours differ from other branches.
Monday 10-1 and 2-5 Tuesday 1-5 Wednesday 10-1 and 2-5
Thursday 1-5 Friday 2-6.
Ashhurst Library
First Christmas/New Year openingDecember/January saw the Ashhurst Community Library extend its Christmas and New Year opening hours for the first time. Branch libraries usually close from Christmas Eve through to mid January, but the Ashhurst branch stayed open, to the great delight of its many users.
The last day of the year, December 31, saw the largest number of issues of any single day in 2007: and the branch
was only open four hours! December issues were up 25% over the previous year.
In addition, Branch Librarian Deon Knox ran a successful summer reading programme - Rocket into Reading (RIR). Summer reading programmes have long been a feature on offer at the City Library, and Deon was thrilled to be able to deliver RIR to Ashhurst kids. The programme offers incentives to children taking part, who report back to librarians on their reading during the summer. The reading programme proved a benefit to all library users – there being an average 108% increase in issues on RIR reporting days over non-reporting days.
