Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 12, from 12 noon to 4 p.m. to spend a fun-fi lled afternoon learning about the native people of New Jersey at the

Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center in Chatham Township. For thousands of years, before the European settlers arrived

in New Jersey, the Lenape Indians lived in these forests, hunting for deer and bears, living in handmade wigwams, fashioning dugout canoes from tulip poplar trees, and carving their tools out of rock and bone. They lived close to the land, existing in balance with nature. Believe it or not, the Lenape are a part of New Jersey’s heritage that is alive and well today.

Join a Lenape Celebration, and bring the entire family to meet members of the Ramapough Lenape tribe. Experience a traditional drum circle, dancers in regalia, and a demonstration of real tools and artifacts. Enjoy many hands-on activities, such as molding a clay pot by the fi re, making fi re without matches, and playing the games that Lenape children played to hone their skills.

Take a guided walk on the wooded trails to discover how the Lenape used local plants to meet their needs, or explore the interior of a wigwam, set up as it would have been hundreds of years ago.

Admission is $5 per person age 3 and up. Rain or shine.

For more information, visit morrisparks.net,or call 973.635.6629.

PARKALLIANCE CORNER

The Morris Park Alliance is moving ahead on several projects thanks to the support

of businesses and individuals. Replacing the seasonal tent

at Central Park of Morris County with a permanent shelter has been in process for two years. Turner Construction Company, based locally in Somerset, is installing the new shelter this fall as an in-kind donation! Support for purchase of the shelter has been received from many local donors, including the Daily Record.

The next project planned is outdoor exercise equipment to be installed at Central Park of Morris County. Local sports training businesses, chiropractors, and others are signing on to this project. The equipment will be free to use, encouraging visitors to be physically active in a natural setting.

The Park Alliance raises funds through grants, donations, and events, including a golf outing and a new Corn Hole Tournament fundraiser. The annual Community Awards dinner held in October recognizes outstanding park and recreation programs, facilities, and supporters from Morris County communities.

If you would like to donate or are interested in additional information about Morris Park Alliance projects, visit morrisparkalliance.org, or email [email protected].

For more information, visit morrisparks.net.

currier and ivesChristmas at

Historic Speedwell

Step away from the noise and tinsel of the holiday hustle, and step into a holiday period fi lled with romance and nostalgia in the 1800s. At Historic Speedwell in Morristown, take a rare

opportunity to visit the decorated Vail House and surround yourself with a sense of simpler, but lovely holiday traditions.

Inspired by the famous printmakers Nathaniel Currier and James Merritt Ives, known for producing hand-painted images, such as The Skating Pond, this holiday celebration, Currier and Ives Christmas held on Saturday, December 7 and Sunday, December 8, refl ects the life and images of Americana, from 12 noon until 5 p.m.

As the Yule log burns, join in the carol singing, take a memorable family photo at a sleigh, and dance to live music in the Carriage House. Games and crafts that once entertained children in the 1800s, will entertain you, too! Take part in the tradition of writing a hope or good tiding for the New Year on paper ‘bread,’ and decorate the trees with papers. Toast to the New Year for good health and a plentiful harvest.

Please help us to remember those in need this time of year and donate a non-perishable food item. As a thank you, you will receive a discount coupon to be used towards a purchase in the Holiday Gift Shop at Historic Speedwell.
