2 MORRIS COUNTY PARK COMMISSION • SUMMER • 2011

Meet our Monarchs“Royalty” o the Butteries!

Each September, monarch butteries begin an incredible journey that takes them

over 2,000 miles to the mountains of Central Mexico to spend the winter. Months

later, these intrepid butteries head north in March, following the sprouting of

milkweed plants just as their great-grandparents did the year before! If you’re amazed

that fragile butteries can achieve such a feat, then join the staff of Pyramid Mountain

Natural Historic Area in Montville all summer to learn more.

At Mission Monarch Search, become “citizen scientists” and help search the butter-

y gardens to tally the number of monarch eggs, caterpillars, chrysalids, and adults pres-

ent on Wednesdays: August 17 and 31 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Learn how to recognize

the monarch in all the stages of its metamorphosis and how to report monarch sightingson the Internet to contribute to important scientic research. These programs are $2 per

person ages 3 and up and are open to all ages.

The thought of a bat ying overhead may

conjure up all types of eerie feelings! Yet,

these icons of Halloween and scary movies

are interesting creatures that offer many positive

 benets to the environment.

Between late summer and early fall, New Jer-

sey bats forage on insects to store up energy before

their long winter’s hibernation. Since Northern New Jersey is home to the largest known overwin-

tering site in the state (the Hibernia Hibernaculum),

this is really the time and place to go batty!

On Wednesday, September 14 at 6 p.m.,

join Dr. Lance Risley of the William Paterson

University Biology Department for a slide show

and discussion on the bats of North America

to learn the true facts about these marvelous

creatures. Dr. Risley is involved in the latest bat

research so you can be up-to-date on bat popula-

tions, including the effects of the devastating

White Nose Syndrome.

After the presentation, join a guided walk on

the trails of Pyramid Mountain with a naturalist.

Using an echolocation device, which makes the bat’s high-frequency sounds audible to human ears,

search for foraging bats.

This program is for ages 8 and up, and the fees

are: $5 for ages 8 through 12; $8 for ages 13 and

up. Space is limited, so call early to register!

For more information or to register,

 please call 973-334-3130.

Bats on the Brink!

Meet a Monarch Festival • 9/10/11Monarchs are doing better in 2011 since their over-wintering population was twice that of 2010

(the lowest numbers on record). Wish them well on their southbound journey on September

10 from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Annual Meet a Monarch Festival. The festival takes place during

the monarch’s peak migration time. Tour the buttery garden and look for live monarchs from

egg to adult, as well as the many other creatures that depend on milkweed. Travel through the

lifecycle stations and experience the metamorphosis of a monarch rsthand, try some buttery

origami, and listen to live music and stories as you celebrate the life and legacy of these amaz-

ing animals. All ages are welcome! The entrance fee is $4 for ages 2 and up.

For more information, please call 973-334-3130 or visit www.morrisparks.net.

Mark your calendars for Saturday,

October 1 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to spend

a fun-lled afternoon learning about the

history of the native people of New Jersey at the

Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center in Chatham

Twp.! For thousands of years, before the pioneersarrived in New Jersey, the Lenape Indians lived in

these forests, hunting for deer and wood buffalo,

living in wigwams, fashioning dugout canoes from tulip

poplar trees, and carving their tools out of rock and bone.

They lived close to the land, existing in balance with na-

ture. However, the Lenape are not a thing of the past, but

a part of New Jersey’s heritage that is alive and well today.

And now you can take part in a Lenape Celebration!

Bring the entire family to see members of the Ra-

mapough Lenape Indians present a traditional drum circle,

dancers in regalia, handicrafts vendors, real tools and

artifacts, and an historical speaker, all gathered around

a model wigwam in the forest. Everyone can enjoy

activities and crafts, such as molding a clay pot by

the re, making a re without matches, and playing

the real games that Lenape children played to hone

their skills. Take a guided walk on the wooded trailsto discover how the Lenape used local plants to meet

their needs or explore the interior of the wigwam, set

up as it would have been hundreds of years ago.

For more information or directions, call the Great

Swamp Outdoor Education Center at 973-635-6629.

Admission is $5 per person ages 3 and up.

gardens, and collections of shrubs

and trees. Willowwood, once named

“Paradise Farm,” is situated on 130

acres of rolling farm land and offers

Cottage, Mediterranean, Woodland,

and Formal gardens. The Lilacs,

Magnolias, and Cherries are popular

as well. Bamboo Brook, originally

known as Merchiston Farm, is the

former home of Martha Brookes

Hutcheson, one of the rst women

to be trained as a landscape architect

in the United States. The historic

gardens were restored in 2010. They

include a tumbling stream, two large

 pools, and extensive plantings.

The Alliance for Morris County Parks

inducted three new board mem-

 bers. Joseph Nazzaro of Randolph,

Brian Williams of Morris Plains, and Patrick

Lobdell from Novartis, were welcomed by

President Kirsten Hotchkiss at a recent board

meeting. New board members and their fel-low incumbents toured several parks in order

to discuss Park Alliance projects for the com-

ing year. Projects in consideration include

the Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center

and The Frelinghuysen Arboretum.

The Park Alliance is also working with

Curb Appeal Design, and Morris Brick and

Stone to install an outdoor seating area at

Mennen Sports Arena. Curb Appeal Design is

donating the design and labor, and Morris Brick

and Stone is contributing to the cost of the pav-

ers. Thanks to these generous donors! We can’t

wait to enjoy the new area!

The commemorative brick program atMennen Sports Arena continues. Brick orders

are processed several times each year. If you

have yet to purchase your brick, call the Park

Alliance ofce at 973-631-5273 or email us at

[email protected].

The Central Park of Morris County dog

park underwent some rehabilitation early

this spring. So many dogs were visiting the

site that the Park Commission needed to

expand the parking lot, install crushed stone,

and re-seed a section. Donations for ongoingsupport of the dog park can be sent to The

Park Alliance, PO Box 1295, Morristown,

NJ 07962-1295.

24 MORRIS COUNTY PARK COMMISSION SUMMER 2011

The Garden Fairies

 are Coming!  G

arden Fairies are visiting The FrelinghuysenArboretum in Morris Township, and summer isthe perfect time to build a miniature home for

these special magical creatures. On Saturday, July 16

from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., (Rain Date, July 17) families areinvited to celebrate the fth Fairy Day and build a homefor these visiting wee folk on the Sylvan Terrance.

Discover the nooks where fairies may hide and

learn what makes the perfect fairy home and then build

one for all our summer visitors to see. Be prepared to

be creative, and while you create, listen to a perfor-

mance of live sylvan music, sure to attract fairies. All

natural building materials, such as bark, branches,

lichens, mosses, feathers, stones and leaves are pro-

vided. Of course, you are welcomed to bring your own

favorite materials as long as they’re natural - fairies

shun man-made materials. All the fairy houses are oc-

cupied and on exhibit until late August, when our Fairy

friends move on to their autumn homes.

The program fee is $25 per house. Registration is

limited and required. Please call 973-326-7603.
