Pathfinder Temple Solel Organizes Abrahamic Collaboration to Welcome the Stranger Temple Solel’s Social Action Community, chaired by Board of Trustees member Rae Rader, has joined with Ascension Lutheran Church and the Islamic Center of the East Valley to welcome refugees to America as they arrive in Phoenix.

At a time when fear of the other seems to carry the day, the clergy and lay leadership of the three Abrahamic faiths—Jews, Christians and Muslims—stand together on our common foundation of kindness, compassion and welcoming the stranger. These three faith communities have come together to launch the Abrahamic Collaboration to Welcome the Stranger (ACWS—see photograph of our founding meeting!).

As Jews coming to America, we know the plight of fleeing anti-Semitism. Nearly every Jewish family in America has been touched by the work the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) has done dating back to 1881.

Today HIAS continues the work of welcoming all refugees who have fled persecution. Drawing on the resources from HIAS, and working with Lutheran Services’ Refugee Focus (with over 30 years of experience), ACWS is preparing to roll up our sleeves to welcome the newest aspiring Americans with comprehensive resettlement and immigration services.

Refugee Focus is thrilled to work with this unique collaboration in providing education and specific opportunities for members of our respective faith communities. Here are some of the ways members of Solel can be involved at the ground floor of ACWS: Meeting newly arrived refugee families at the airport, collecting basics for families to move into their Refugee Focus funded apartments, helping identify job opportunities, spending time

with families, children and adults, to help acclimate to their new country, culture and language. Refugee Focus will provide direction and training for all volunteers.

Honoring a proud identity as a nation of immigrants, the United States has been built on welcoming refugees throughout our history. The common values of our three Abrahamic faiths are well-aligned in helping these refugees resettle in the “land of opportunity,” in a nation that cherishes the value of uplifting the oppressed.

For those interested in getting involved, please contact either of our members,

Patti Evans ([email protected]) or Faith Boninger ([email protected]).

Rabbi John Linder

I would like to begin by saying to all of you how lucky and excited I feel to be given the opportunity in being the next President of Temple Solel. These next few years are going to be exciting as we kickoff our next 50 years for Temple Solel. We are fortunate to build on the legacy that has been handed over to us

these past 50 years and to set the stage as we dream and envision our bright and amazing journey into the future.

What gave me great pleasure was a few weeks ago when I had the honor of sitting on the bimah during the Shabbat Service for Temple Solel’s 50th Anniversary celebration and watching as the social hall was transformed from seating the expected 250 guests to the 700 congregants that actually attended. That night demonstrated to me that Temple Solel and our community can and will survive anything.

Our goal together over the next few years will be to set the stage for Solel’s next 50 years as “We carry on to elevate Temple Solel

to a place where our children will be proud of this legacy created by some forward thinking people who dared to dream big in 1966 and 2016!”

As proud as we are of our congregation now, I look forward to working with our staff, with Rabbi Linder, with Temple Solel’s Board of Trustees and with all of the members of our Congregation to continue to build on our legacy and together achieving new heights in our future.

I am truly humbled to serve as Temple Solel’s President during this journey that all of us will be making together. It will yield some exciting and engaging opportunities and experiences over the next few years. I will look forward to celebrating with all of you at the 100th celebration in 2066!

We Need to Know… Please inform the Temple Solel office when a family member or friend is in the hospital. Too often we find out about illnesses, crises and hospitalizations long after they occur. This is a missed opportunity for visits from our rabbis and calls from the Caring Community as well as other assistance offered by the temple. We need your help in order to offer ours.

So Your Child Turns 11 This Month? Stop by the temple office and fill out a Temple Solel Bar/Bat Mitzvah Date Request Form

to get the process started. Fillable PDF forms are also available for download on our website: templesolel.org/forms.

Ari Benjamin Anderson, son of Sheri Heitner-Anderson and Ted Anderson, will become a bar mitzvah on Saturday, June 4, 2016 at 10:30 am alongside his sister Abbi. Ari attends Pardes Jewish Day School and is a 2nd degree black belt in Taekwondo. He

recently started doing Aikido and hopes to progress to a higher level in this form of martial arts too. For his mitzvah project, Ari is currently collecting funds to bring children from Title 1 schools to the Arizona Science Center to engage them with robotics.

J u n e 2 0 1 6 / I ya r - S i va n 5 7 7 6 5 Raker Religious School

D uring my term as Interim Raker Religious School Director, my guide has been a commitment and belief in the power and value of community. I have gathered a few other important lessons along the way. I have learned that bravery is when you are afraid to do something, yet you do it anyway. I have come to realize that leadership is not about being the one who knows just what to do, but about being the person willing to take responsibility, after listening and making thoughtful choices with integrity. I believe that each one of us

has the ability to be a leader when we choose to rise to the occasion and when we have the wisdom to surround ourselves with other talented people who have the same goals of building something meaningful. It is easy to be a critic, but difficult to step up and say, here is what we can do to improve, together. As we build a better and better school and community for our kids, this is the spirit that I hope can continue to guide us.

Raker Religious School is:

teachers who love the students and are devoted to creating meaningful Jewish experiences.

students engaged in daily learning and meaningful projects each week.

students on the bimah leading prayers and songs, and then sharing a Shabbat meal.

madrichim in bright orange shirts giving back to younger students.

forming bonds at The Youth Retreat at Camp Friendly Pines.

family groups making an impact by taking opportunities to help others.

praying with intention at t’filah.

holiday celebrations and learning experiences for families in fun and friendship.

Raker Religious School is many beautiful people and moments that I will carry with me.

In peace and love, l’hitraot,

April Goodman Interim Religious School Director

Catch the Jew by Tuva Tenenbom —#1 Best Seller in Israel

In “Catch the Jew!,” Tuvia Tenenbom eschews this crusty framework. Crisscrossing Israel and the Palestinian Territories over seven months in 2013-14, Mr. Tenenbom meets with high-ranking politicians, celebrated writers, religious leaders, “human rights” professionals, left-wing political activists and West Bank settlers, cajoling Jews and Arabs to speak for themselves. Mr. Tenenbom’s conversations range from the sacred to the profane, from high-level politics to ribald discussions of the dating rituals of various religious groups and ethnicities. “Catch the Jew!” is an illuminating—and alarming—account of a part of the promised land that few foreigners see.—WSJ

What Every Christian Needs To Know About The Jewishness Of Jesus by Rabbi Evan Moffic—Judaism-History

Rabbi Moffic from Solel Congregation outside of Chicago, a regular visitor to Temple Solel, offers the third book in a series helping Christians explore the Jewish roots of Christianity “Moffic does explore the possibility that Jews might, in different ways, see the historical Jesus as part of the Jewish story as well (short of believing him the son of God). As the book makes clear, much of what Jesus taught is already part of an authentically Jewish conversation. Accessible and powerful, this book is a valuable contribution to interreligious understanding.”—Publishers Weekly

Social Action at Temple Solel On Sunday, April 24 Rabbi Linder and Temple Solel members Faith Boninger, Bonnie Levitt, Patti Evans and Rae Rader joined congregants from various churches for a tour of local mosques. Sponsored by the Islamic Speakers Bureau of Arizona, the Faith Tour-Finding Common Ground visited 3 mosques where we were warmly welcomed by the Imam and lay leaders. We were given a brief overview and history of each community and discussed the similarities of our shared Abrahamic religions. At each mosque we enjoyed a lovely meal and warm hospitality, and had an opportunity to ask questions and learn about the Islamic faith.

Knitting for a Purpose We invite all those who have a desire to knit or crochet items for the organizations we support to join us on Wednesday June 8, 1:00-3:00 pm. Mindy Mackey, Nurse Midwife from PIMC writes:

Dear Ms. Bonime, Thank you and your fellow knitters for all of the lovely items you have knitted over the years for our Phoenix Indian Medical Center families. For many of them it is the nicest baby gift they will receive. I wish you could see the joy in their faces when they are presented with a hand knitted gift. I have meant to write and thank you so many times, I apologize for not writing to you sooner. I know I speak for all the physicians, midwives, and nurses when I say your gifts are so appreciated!

J u n e 2 0 1 6 / I ya r - S i va n 5 7 7 6 9 Thank You Volunteers

Volunteers are an essential part of Temple Solel. We would like to thank the following volunteers for their time, hard work and efforts:

“Shavuot” at Torah Study June is a lovely month for weddings, so it’s no surprise that the Jewish holiday of Shavuot begins on Saturday, June 11. Shavuot marks the climax of the Exodus story which we began telling on Passover. At our seder tables, we recounted the journey of the Israelites from Egypt into the wilderness. Now, seven weeks later, they arrive at Mount Sinai to receive the Torah from God.

As the Israelites draw close to Mount Sinai, God descends the mountain to meet them. This epic moment is mirrored in human terms by the reunion of Moses with his wife Zipporah at the Israelite campsite. Separated by the events of Exodus, Zipporah travels to Sinai to rejoin Moses and the Israelites (Exodus 18:5). Her reunion with Moses infuses the scene with the spirit of Shekhinah, the Feminine Divine, and the energy of yichud (romantic unity).

As God gives the Torah to Israel, both parties exchange vows of loyalty and love. God says, “I betroth you to me in righteousness and justice, in kindness and mercy. I betroth you to me in faithfulness. I betroth you to me forever” (Hosea 2:21). And Israel responds, “Shema… I am listening. You are my God, you alone. I love you with all my heart, all my soul, and all my strength. I will teach these words to my children, and repeat them daily. I will wear them on my hand (like a ring), and upon my eyes (like a veil), and write them on the doorpost and gate of the home (we share together)” (Deuteronomy 6:4-9).

On Saturday, June 11, Temple Solel’s Torah study class will celebrate Shavuot. We will reenact the wedding between God and Israel, and receive the Torah anew. Please join us for this special event at 9:00 am in the library!

June/July 2016 Tzedakah Box AZ BRAINFOOD

Located in Mesa, Arizona, AZ Brainfood is a non-profit organization which discreetly provides a backpack of food to feed hungry school children on the weekends. More than 60% of Mesa, Arizona elementary aged children qualify for the Federal Program of free or reduced lunch at school. For some of these children, their only food comes from the school lunch programs. Unfortunately, many

have little or no food to eat on the weekends. The backpacks from

AZ Brainfood is their only food. Each bag of food contains approximately 3,000 calories of nutritious food and weighs less than 5 pounds so the children can easily carry them. Bags include items such as pop-top ravioli or stew, juice boxes, shelf-stable milk, plastic fruit cups, individual cereals, power bars/granola bars, non-refrigerated pudding, peanut butter, crackers, etc.). 100% of public donations to AZ Brainfood go directly to purchasing food. Arizona Brainfood is run by a team of volunteers working in a donated warehouse. (note: There are over 200 backpack programs like this in existence around the country). [email protected].

Did You Know? Liturgical Publications, Inc. (LPI), is the company that prints this newsletter for Temple Solel and many other religious organizations each month for FREE. Yes, the temple does not pay to have this newsletter printed which saves us thousands of dollars each year.

Our newsletter is supported through the generosity of the advertisers—many of whom are our own temple congregants or members of our local community. We encourage everyone to support our advertisers with their patronage when they’re able to do so.

If you’ve never placed an ad with LPI and would consider doing so in the future, we ask you to contact Dave Nommensen at 800-950-9952 ext. 2465 or via email to [email protected].

Remember, A strong and vibrant newsletter is good for our community and a strong business community is good for our temple.

Smiley staff members greeted guests during the 50th Anniversary Saturday Night event at the Superfon residence on April 16, 2016.
