Richard Pate (1516–1588)

Pate’s Grammar School was founded by Richard Pate in 1574. It is likely that Richard Pate was educated at the Chantry School in

Cheltenham Parish Church. He went on to Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and then into Royal service where he served as Commissioner for

Henry VIII, Edward VI and Elizabeth I.

Our outstanding academic reputation speaks for itself, but there is so much more to say about the school, the talented and dedicated staff and the lasting relationships our young people will develop during their time with us. However, this prospectus is all about our students, their aspirations and primarily the things they are motivated to do for themselves.

The students who arrive at Pate’s have the potential to achieve great things. Combine this with exceptional care and inspirational teachers who “quite simply give above and beyond” (Ofsted), in a culture where curiosity and challenging the norm is encouraged, and it is no surprise that Pate’s has a special buzz where almost anything seems possible.

Pate’s has a long tradition of providing students with a free first-class education, regardless of their background. We are among the schools at the very top of the national league tables in respect of our outstanding exam results; we feature in independent studies highlighting the excellent progress students make between key stages, and the calibre of their university choices when they leave. But, for our students, what really matters is the freedom to be themselves, with good friends, lots of extra activities, societies and new ideas to share and explore. By any measure Pate’s is an outstanding school and I am honoured to be Head Master.

A warm welcome from Pate’s Grammar School

Pate’s is the perfect place for young people full of ideas and boundless energy to follow their dreams, or maybe take that ambitious scheme one step further. Great things are possible when like-minded people are handed the reins and given opportunities to collaborate – intellectually, artistically, politically, but above all creatively.

Thinking out loud

Student-run societies of all kinds flourish at Pate’s – literature, art, music, philosophy, history, politics, science, computer programming and debating are some examples. Our students have a natural inclination to develop their understanding and opinions independently; to problem-solve; and to explore more deeply those things they care about.

Good communication is a priority, particularly as there is so much to shout about. Our “highly developed IT systems” (Ofsted) keep everyone up to speed and corridors are decorated with all manner of imaginative posters publicising a plethora of student societies, events and performances. School assemblies are regularly led by students with news of their projects and adventures, supported by our trained student tech crew. Students often choose ingenious and fun ways to get their message across and assemblies are very popular with staff and students alike.

A force to be reckoned with

Youth participation in democratic processes and wider society is vital to instil the core liberal values of fairness, democracy, justice and consent. We have a critical responsibility to empower young people to have their say – and be heard.

Students will vote (or be candidates) in School Council or House Official elections, mock elections and referenda; sit on interview panels for new staff; join social action campaigns; and may even debate in the European Youth Parliament in Strasbourg – though not necessarily in English!

Citizens of the world

COMMUNIT Y

Our students increasingly see themselves as part of an international community and the study of foreign languages and culture is flourishing. Pate’s is a socially aware multicultural society mindful of the human rights of dignity, freedom, democracy and equality. In recent years our students’ extensive and creative campaigning on human rights issues has earned them an Amnesty International special award.

We all have a duty to help young people to appreciate the diversity of this planet and explore ways of protecting it. Through teaching and debate, and by bringing in internationally renowned scientists, scholars and philosophers to speak to us whenever they can, we learn more about global challenges and how we might find peaceful solutions to conflict, in all its forms.

“There is dedicated time for students to become engaged in local community projects.” (Ofsted)

We are ambitious for our students to live healthy and worthy lives without prejudice or intolerance. They will learn about the prevailing socio-economic climate in the local area. They will engage with families, primary schools and community groups in a variety of activities which they will organise and lead themselves. Pate’s students raise thousands of pounds for their chosen charities each year, highlighting both global and local issues. By coming together with a shared cause, they develop a conscience and discover how it feels to have made a difference in the world.

Create, perform, compete

Our students have so much to give and thankfully at Pate’s there is an “exceptional range” (Ofsted) of opportunities outside lessons for them to be creative, perform and play sport to their hearts’ content. They astound us at times with their interpretations of music, drama, dance and art – of life as they see and feel it.

We are proud of the exceptional pastoral care our students receive and we invest considerable energy and resources in their wellbeing. Our number one priority is for them to feel happy and settled when they first arrive. Getting-to-know-each-other fun activity days are quickly followed by the first House competition of the year, House Music, where all will join House choirs, bands and orchestras in raising-the-roof sell-out performances to compete for the House Music trophy! And so the stage is set, with a happy sense of purpose and lively spirit of camaraderie binding everyone together.

The House system is right at the heart of school life and it is all about excitement, fun and friendly rivalry. Inter-House competitions are major highlights throughout the year, run by senior students bringing together all ages in a spectacular team effort! Whether it is art, dance, debating, drama, music, quizzes, singing or sport, the emphasis is on just getting involved and giving it a go – so everyone’s a winner regardless of which House lifts the cup!

It is truly a testament to the students themselves that there is such a strong sense of belonging and good humour right from the start, giving everyone the extra incentive to join in – whether it be singing in a choir or running a relay. It is no wonder that many youngsters have ambitions to follow in the footsteps of the seniors and take advantage of the variety of leadership opportunities that will come their way throughout their time in school.

First among equals

Pate’s Sixth Form is an exciting place to be. At that time in their lives when students are beginning to think about what their future might hold, and what impact they will have on the world, Pate’s Sixth Form is a seedbed for big ideas and ambitious plans. These two years are a time to learn new ways of working, in preparation for the independence of university, travel, or training opportunities; students are encouraged to take more responsibility for their studies, proactively seeking out knowledge to enhance their understanding beyond the curriculum. Our students are offered the chance to study for an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), to undertake work experience and to attend a myriad of subject and careers-related talks in order to stimulate their interest and perhaps lead them down paths that they might not at first have considered.

Outside the classroom there is a wealth of opportunities to contribute to the wider life of the school and beyond by taking on responsibilities such as becoming a House or Committee Official, leading teams or developing new groups and societies. We depend upon our sixth form students to be role models for the rest of the school; they are our best ambassadors and we are unfailingly proud and awestruck at their maturity, energy and creativity.

“Students speak very highly of the chances they are given to explore ideas.”

Pate’s students have the liberty to define themselves, and the intellectual freedom to explore and debate their ideas and beliefs with confidence. They take great pride in the school and its atmosphere of respect and admiration for each other’s abilities, qualities and achievements.
