I do get a lot of sewing done in these cold months. My goal is to finish at least two UFOs and complete my paper piecing project I started in January. I do not want to start another new project!! Ladies and Gentlemen, The holiday rush is over, the Christmas decorations and trees are down and put away for next year and now it is 2016. Wow, 2015 went by so fast. Secretary’s Minutes By Sue Mechura

President Patty Frazier opened the meeting and welcomed all attending. She was NOT in a good mood, but we humored her. Luckily, Penn state’s season is almost over. Her mood improved, and she wished everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Secret Santa Patty opened a surprise envelope containing 6 gift cards, each worth $250.00. They represented a “Thank You” to the members of the Guild, from various businesses and organizations, for their work and community service. Treasurer’s Report Pauline Charles moved that we approve the report, and Cathy Eash seconded the motion. Secretary’s Minutes Doug Wilson moved that we approve the minutes and Carol Maurer seconded the motion. New Members/Guest New members tonight were Jo Carr, Ciri Daigle, Kim Rohrer, and Sandra Rishell. Judith Funk was our guest. Quilt Show Maureen and Amy began their report by passing out cards noting the date of next year’s quilt show, which is November 11, 12 and 13, 2016. It will be the 10th anniversary of the Lebanon Quilt-ers Guild Quilt Show. All of the chairpersons for this year’s show were recognized, and were thanked profusely for their efforts. There were 165 quilts in the show: Viewer’s Choice award went to Kitty Rose Zackey, and the runner-up was Suzette Engle. Donna Pozorsky still has mug rugs for sale, and there are 3 items that are available from the Silent Auction. Quilt requirements are in the December newsletter. March Class Pauline Charles will teach the Pineapple Block. The cost of the class is $30, sign-ups will begin in January, and the date of the Saturday class will be announced in January, 2016. Community Service Kathy Chickey reported that Philhaven gave the Guild $400, which was spent on blankets for Philhaven. Kathy asked for volunteers to reinforce the borders on the blankets. Morn-ingstar totes are finished, and there will be a write-up in the Guild newsletter, including pictures, from the Morningstar project coordi-nator. There are 4 twin-sized quilt kits left to be completed for Sup-portive Concept. Batting must be provided and quilting must be fin-ished by the member. There are currently no pillow case kits left to complete. Raffle Quilt The Guild made a profit of $2856. 1 2 on Raffle Quilt ticket sales. The winner was Sue Bechtel’s aunt! Sue Kline has the raffle tickets for “Purple Passion”, the 2015-2016 raffle quilt. The quilt was appliqued and hand quilted by Maggie Culbert. The 2016-2017 Raffle Quilt, The Mariner’s Compass is in the making. There will be opportunities to help make the paper-pieced blocks. Community Service by Kathy Chickey

MONEYWI$E by Linda Rohland

Happy New Year everyone. Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. We had a very successful Quilt Show thanks to the wonderful leadership of Maureen Light and Amy Wissinger and everyone else who helped in many different ways. As you can see we had more expenses in November than we had income. We purchased the pattern and fabric for the Raffle Quilt for 2017. Also the Fall Retreat has a negative number due to the fact that Camp Swatara changed their cancellation policy and we had to ask everyone who attended to pay last fiscal year. The Workshop area also shows a negative as we collected money for the August work-shop last fiscal year as well. Now that the holidays are over we can all start doing more quilting. At least that is my plan. If you have any questions or comments about the Treasurer’s report please contact me: at 717-272-7262 or [email protected]

Additional Explanation to this month’s Treasurer’s Report:

1. The pattern and fabric for the 2017 Raffle quilt was purchased which resulted in the minus number in that line.

2. The Fall Retreat has a minus number also because most of the money from the people who attended the events had to be collected last fiscal year.

Dear Members,

I'd like to thank many of the members who participated in the Morning Star Pro-ject. It's wonderful that so many of you joined in helping to make a new mom feel like someone cares. I told you at the December meeting that I would send you the information I received from Briana Woodring. It sounds like a worthwhile cause. Read on: Hi Kathy, Morning Star Pregnancy Services is a pro-life pregnancy center that helps women in crisis preg nancies. We provide loving nonjudgmental counseling to the women who come to us. Many times, they are considering abortion and we talk to them about their other choices (parenting, adop tion) and also discuss the consequences of abortion. We assist those mothers who choose to parent by providing for some of their material needs: Maternity clothing, diapers, baby cloth ing, bedding, formula and some furniture items. In addition, every month we hold a Safe Sleep class, where moms are taught how to put their babies to sleep safely and receive a free Pack- and-Play for attending the class. We also provide other services, including pregnancy testing, STD testing, limited ultrasounds, and referrals to other social service agencies. All of our services are free and confidential. You are welcome anytime to come and tour our site! If there is any other information you need, please let me know. I am very grateful for your support, Briana Woodring We handed out 50 pillow case kits at the December meeting and a few members picked up Support-ive Concept quilts. I still have a few left. I will have one of my friends bring them along for the January meeting to see if anyone is willing to make the few remaining quilts left. They will be at the back table. Remember they will not be needed until April so they can be presented at the May meeting.

Smith. And brainstorm a new design for our Guild’s 2016 Log Cabin Challenge using “Log Cabin Quilts with Attitude: A New Twist on an Old Favorite” by Sharon V. Rotz. Have you ever noticed how scraps seem to multiply? No matter how nimbly your fingers fly.

Around my house there are lot of scraps, In various size boxes and paper sacks.

All from projects done before, Instead of scooting them out the door.

Kept for all the quilts I plan to make, When at last the time I take.

Friends and relatives have been so gracious, Making there own drawers and closets spacious.

Now I appreciate scraps, I really do, Sometimes I feel I need some room too!

That’s when I decide to make a quilt,

Through all my scraps I silt. Here's a piece that will always clash,

Ought to be thrown in the trash. It will never look good, or blend in a quilt, as it should.

Keeping my primary motive in mind, Laying all prejudices behind,

Decide to use all the scraps I can, That’s why this particular quilt I began.

While cutting, I think how easy it is, For those of us in the quilting "biz".

Picking and choosing our color selections. From material lined in natural progression.

To buy fabrics all brand new, Quilts are works of art when we're through.

Quilting wasn’t done like that in my grandma's day, Using what they had was the way.

And since quilting wasn’t invented by me, I decided to try it out and see.

Could a quilt be made from scraps or not, Or should the "Scrap Quilt" be forgot.

I've got to tell you it was a startling revelation, As I worked on this new creation.

Didn’t think it would look like this a bit, Why every piece seems to match and fit.

And I don’t mind saying, "It's really pretty", Had I search every shop in the city.

Searched the world all around, I could never have found.

Such an exquisite selection, To make the quilted perfection.

So I'll keep on saving scrapes of every kind, When you give me scraps I don’t mind.

And I'll be thankful you're so generous, Because scraps make quilts that amaze most of us.

So, who’s handy or has a hubby that is handy and would like a one-day wood-working project?

Change your narrow ironing board to a quilter’s ironing board. For those that know what they are doing, this is not a difficult project: and so much cheap-er than the $100 ones I’ve seen here and there.

Under the list of items you need for the project - and some advertising—you have a choice to download, view or next step. It is as simple as that. A great Valentine present? PS: I also found it helpful to read the suggestions in the comments section below the instructions. http://www.instructables.com/id/How-To-Convert-A-Regular-Ironing-Board-Into-a-Quil/

The Lebanon Quilters Guild has been exchanging 5” monthly charm squares for many years. This is a voluntary activity. You may participate as many or as few months as you choose. The general di-rections are as follows. If you need further explanation, please contact: Sandy Walters (717) 533-2608 [email protected]

Each month’s exchange will follow a theme. You will select print fabrics that fit the theme. You will select (from your favorite quilt shop or from your collection) four different good quality 100% cot-ton print fabrics for the theme in the amount of ¼ yard each You will pre-wash the fabric and cut (8) 5” squares from each of the four fabrics.

You will make 8 identical packages of charm squares. Each package will contain one each of the four different fabrics. Please put the four charm squares in a sandwich size plastic bag. The zip-pered or self-closing bags are preferred but not required. Please put your name in each bag (address labels are easy and handy). You can re-use bags by putting your label inside the bag. Then put all your sandwich bags into a gallon zip-lock baggie and write your name on it in permanent ink. (This bag can be reused each month.) Bring your 8 packages to the guild meeting and sign in at the charm table. Put your stack of baggies on the gridded numbered plastic sheet and sign in on the corresponding number. Leave the gallon bag next to the charm grid.

At the mid-meeting break, you may collect your charms after they are sorted. They will be on the charm table inside your gallon bag. You will get 8 different packages, one each from the 8 traders who signed in immediately after you. If you are trader #1, you will get packages from traders 2,3,4,5,6,7,8, and 9. If you are trader #2, you will receive packages from trader #3,4,5,6,7,8,9, and 10. When we reach the end of the list, we circle back to the beginning. If you are the last trader, you get the baggies from the first 8 traders. If there are more than 9 traders you will not get the same stack of packages as anyone else.

You must abide by the trading rotation described above. You may not substitute other packages. This is the most important guideline to make this trading successful. You may trade privately later with another swapper if you want a set you did not receive, or you may contact the person who brought that package to see if they have more at home. If you are unhappy with the quality of fab-rics traded by anyone, discuss your concern with the swap organizer, Sandy Walter.

If you wish to trade during a month you will be absent, please send your charms with a friend or mail or deliver them in advance to Sandy Walter. Your charms will be held one month for you to pick up, or you may designate a friend to pick them up for you.

Unfortunately, if you forget to bring your charms on any given month, there can be no IOU’s nor may you participate that evening. You can however, save your charms for the occasional ‘Trader’s Choice’ bonus swap.

EDITOR’S NOTE: please go to the guild web site www.lebanonquiltersguild.com and under the heading MEETINGS and GUILD ACTIVITIES a drop down box will appear and at the bottom of that list click on CHARMS. Not only will it tell you how to cut your charms, there are ideas for how much fabric to buy, links to the history of charm squares, patterns that work perfectly for charms and links to charm books for purchase.

Quilt Guild Meeting Winter Cancellation Policy

The decision of whether to cancel the monthly meeting will be made very simply: IF THE CORNWALL SCHOOL DISTRICT SCHOOLS ARE CLOSED , (or are sent home early), OUR MEETING IS CANCELLED!!!

In addition, any member of the guild may contact any of the officers/committee chairpersons whose phone numbers are listed in the yearly program or the monthly newsletter, if they cannot find the info from TV or the radio. Members are also encouraged to call their friends once they know the meeting has been cancelled.

This year's guild challenge is to build a cabin - a log cabin that is. The log cabin block is so versa-tile and it is not a difficult block to construct. There are wonky log cabins, traditional log cabins and scrappy log cabins. The list of log cabins could go on and on. How creative can you get? Here are the rules; DATE CONSTRUCTED: The challenge quilts must be started after our December meeting and finished by the June Meeting

SIZE: MAXIMUM SIZE is 36x36. We need room to display the entries for judging. :- Any log cabin design of your choice. SETTING - The finished piece must contain at least 3 log cabin blocks on the FRONT of the piece QUILTING - If quilted by someone else you must include that information on the info sheet FABRIC - Your Choice - go wild or traditional it is up to you HAVE FUN CREATING YOUR LOG CABIN From the Editor:

The 2015-2016 Guild Challenge by Donna Sherk

Page 7

I always tell my students that quilts are made of straight lines, but that is not always true, Quilts are made of broken lines—just like life. Those un-expected turns, that exotic path. It wasn’t at all what you expected. You discover interacting patterns and vivid colors of life stitched together from what had seemed nothing more than unmatched scraps and broken lines. Stepping back you see there has been a design and all along, a designer. I would not always be happy. I know that. My lines would be broken again and again. But now, my lines are intersected with others. I have companions for the journey and whatever we face, we would face together and each be a part of a bigger design bound by a silver thread. How To Save a Warped Cutting Mat by Charlie Hanney Here’s something I did not know…...Did you know your cutting mat loves moisture? You should be giving it a spritz every now and then for a longer life.

For whatever reason, has your cutting mat warped? Go to this web site—and you will have to keep scrolling WAY down the page, but there is a great solution that evidently works about 85% of the time. Worth reading and at least knowing about!
