In March, 1952 - when stereo photography was on everyone’s mind - the Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind sponsored a “Snow Ball”, an annul fund-raising event. A feature of the intermission was an invitational exhibition of 3-D photography. Well-known personalities, including actor Harold Lloyd and the drugstore chain’s Myrtle Walgreen, were invited to exhibit. Many members of the Jackson Park Camera Club’s 3- D section also exhibited.
The “Snow Ball” became the foundation stone of the Chicago Stereo Camera Club. A group of stereographers under the guidance of Robert L. McIntyre, Camera Editor of the Chicago Tribune, organized the club with hosting the Chicago Lighthouse International Exhibition of Stereo Photography as one of its primary purposes. The club joined the Photographic Society of America with the result that shows had to be conformed to meet PSA’s rigid exhibition standards. Workshop parties were held often and club members attended not only to participate but to support, serve and cheer those who were doing the work. At public presentations, ladies of the club wore gowns and the gentlemen dressed accordingly, a sign of the lofty position the club held in Chicago society.
Today, the Chicago Lighthouse International Exhibition of Stereo photography is proud to be listed as one of the longest continuing contributor to the Chicago Lighthouse.

Since 1906, The Chicago Lighthouse for People Who are Blind or Visually Impaired has been creating opportunities to enable people who are blind, visually impaired or blind with additional disabilities to have equal access to education and employment.
Housed under its roof at 1850 W. Roosevelt Rd. in Chicago are the nation’s oldest and most prominent Low Vision Clinic; a clock manufacturing facility in which visually impaired workers produce clocks that are distributed around the world; a nationally acclaimed school for children with multi-disabilities; an innovative Legal Clinic to assist people who are blind in combating discrimination; a store carrying over 350 items designed to assist people who are blind or visually impaired with daily living; a radio station broadcasting the latest in news and a variety of other programs to a global audience of people who are blind; a library providing blind or visually impaired students with Braille and large print textbooks; and a VA program to assist veterans in all 50 states
For the first time in its history, the Lighthouse has opened, earlier this year, a comprehensive facility outside of its main location in downtown Chicago: Lighthouse North, at 222 Waukegan Road in Glenview. This facility provides the same world-class services in its Vision Rehabilitation Center including examinations, occupational therapy, and psychological counseling. Additionally, it offers a wide array of programming for children, youth, and senior adults, as well as free legal counseling. The Tools for Living retail store showcases the latest assistive devices and adaptive technology.
Entry fees and donations received at public showings of this salon have supplied some of the funds required for non-grant items essential to the operation of The Chicago Lighthouse. The Chicago Stereo Camera Club is proud to be the sponsor and contributor for the sixty-fourth consecutive year. A voluntary contribution, in addition to your ticket purchase, will help continue the good work. We thank you for your support.
