So maybe you heard about the Pew Report that was released a few weeks ago now under the

headline “Christians decline sharply.”

As usual the press coverage was a complete misrepresentation of what the report actually revealed, but that does not mean that we can or should ignore it. The report showed conclusively that as the US population increases the number of people who strongly identify as Christians is declining compared to

the population.

There are many important realities to face in all this but my first reaction is going to be the motivation for our new summer sermon series

that begins this month.

Maybe the increasing number of people who call themselves “nones” because they do not identify with any organized faith simply are still looking for a faith

that speaks to them? (Cont. on Page 2)

Message From Pastor Cont.

Maybe if faith could be presented to them with a different focus and emphasis it would at least help some people see themselves becoming

people of faith?

I have prayed about this and sense that the Holy Spirit has given me some insights in the Word to address this reality. Starting in June I will be sharing these insights in a sermon series called “The Power of Trusting

God.”

It is my prayer that these messages will encourage you to see the powerful faith that is active in your life. And I would ask you to invite your friends who have doubts or who have walked away from faith or think that they

cannot become a Christian believer.

Talking about the meaning of faith must change to address the shifting

cultural landscape that we are living in.

Join me this summer so that we can experience together the power of

trusting God.

Book Review // Bryson City Tales by

Walt Larrimore, MD

So was Jesus a fly fisherman or a lake fisherman? Find this topic and many others explored and supported with scripture in this delightful book. With the background of the mountain hamlets of North Carolina, a young doctor goes through many peculiar challenges of blending expertise training from Duke University Medical School with the les-sons of daily practice of rural medicine. Dr. Larrimore learns to blend his highly technical background with the strong conviction of folklore medicine practiced by the lovable local residents. With hu-mor, the family doctor is also the emer-gency physician, the coroner combined with wilderness medicine and search and rescue calls. Integrating science, rural medicine and God's word, Dr. Larrimore learns how his world his inhabited by colorful people where the next patient

could be someone's livestock or pet!

During April we served 251 households and March we served 210 households. This is about the normal pattern we see for the

spring. Your great support has made it easy to provide for these neighbors!

Throughout the next month, we will continue to need canned tuna, chili, peanut butter, mac and cheese, cereal, oatmeal pack-

ets, fruit cups and juice drinks. There is almost nothing we cannot use.

We continue the spring garden this month. Tomatoes planted early in April are showing promise for the warm weather. The rad-

ishes were great and we had some lettuce. The peas are producing and the beans will be blooming shortly.

If you are interested in donating volunteer hours please leave your name and availability. There may be some help needed as we approach summer and have our regulars going on vacations! We use a lot of volunteers Monday mornings and Wednesday mornings. If you would like to just do one or two times per month we can arrange some opportunities. Leave your name with

Pepper (916 880-0703) or Delores (916 716-5918).

Preschool News //

Friends of the Preschool We had a great May. We have been enjoying the wonders of the season spring. Our friend Hannah brought in her butterflies for us to enjoy and release. We were so excited to see them fly away. God

colored their wings so beautiful.

Thank you from all of us to all of you! Though your generosity and support, your preschool was able to raise $473.00 from our Spring Bake Sale. We have purchased new Sand and Water Tables (they are on their way!), a new plastic, picnic table to replace our old one on the playground and fun new instruments for our sand and water

table.

We are excited here at preschool, our summer camp is underway. We are blasting off once again, learning all about God’s Great Big

Universe. So it is Space Camp for us.

Did your child attend Good Shepherd Preschool? Care to share? We are interested in your testimony. Please email your interest to

Jennifer Rao at [email protected].

Thank you to all who help through Thrivent Choice Dollars and Raley’s Extra Credit. Preschool earned $420.00 during the month of May, and approximately $200.00 for the quarter from the Raley’s

Cooperation.

Just a reminder that your preschool is always in need of 5 ounce

cups, select-a-size paper towels and construction paper.

Also, Recycle Sunday is every third Sunday of the month. If you are unable to drop off your recycleables on Sunday, your preschool will accept them during business hours (7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) We accept all California Cash Redemption Value items

(look for CA-CRV) on the drinking containers. We cannot accept milk containers and wine bottles at this time.

Help spread the word, your church preschool is accepting enrollment for the Summer Program and also for the fall.

Many Thanks,

Sandy Oakes, Preschool Director

iMPACT NEWS //

Keep Us in Prayer this Summer June will be a busy month for our iMPACT staff members with two road trips and the start of another outreach camp. Resume Cafe will also continue to be open on the 1st Sunday of each month. Sometimes my team and I get so busy with the details of ministry work that we forget to ask for prayer and help. So please keep our iMPACT staff, volunteers, kids/campers in your prayers as we plan all the details and discern what is needed for the children we serve to know Jesus. Road Trip #1: Girls of Grace @ Bodega Bay (June 9th - 12th) We will start the season off with Ms. Kim and I taking 8 of our neighborhood girls on a short road trip to Bodega Bay. This excursion is based on the girls behavior (both at home, school, and in our program) and their program attendance. We have roughly 8-10 girls showing up weekly to our Thursday session-- and 5-6 show up to our weekly Sunday session. The girls graciously decided to give the boys (from Sons of Thunder) a chance to go to Mt. Cross this year (instead of them) which is why we are doing a shorter and less expensive trip to Bodega Bay. It’s still a treat that the girls are very excited about. Road Trip #2: Sons of Thunder @ Mt. Cross (June 14th - 20th) Sway runs our Sons of Thunder program and he will take a group of boys (9 of them) to Mt. Cross. He will drive and stay there the whole week. This is important since most of the boys haven’t been outside of Sacramento or have had this type of experience before. Having a familiar person stay at the camp is not required but our boys certainly appreciate it. *Volunteer Opportunity: We are renting a Mini-Van for Trip #2 but will need another car and driver. For more details, please contact me at [email protected]

Camp iMPACT - Summer Program June 29th - July 30th (Open 5-weeks) Monday - Thursday; 9am - 1pm Fellowship Hall We will serve up to: 60 campers (Neighborhood kids that range from K-5th grades) 20-25 Jr/Sr Camp Counselors (youth that have aged-out of camps and come back to serve, help run the camp, and learn job skills; ) Immediate Camp Needs: (items can be brought to church office) Food: Gallons of milk, cereal (Cheerios, Kix, Chex), fresh fruit (watermelons, mandarins, apples, strawberries); peanut butter, jelly, and bread; Backpacks and supplies will be needed for about

85 kids/youth (by end of July) For more details and for other volunteer opportunities, contact Outreach Director Please join us on Sunday, August 2nd, for an “iMPACT Sunday” when we take over the 11am Worship service and share a camp video from the summer. This Sunday will also be dedicated to recognizing our 5 youth boys who’ve graduated from the Resume Cafe program. We plan to serve a light breakfast in the courtyard with some entertainment. Thank you and God Bless, Amy E. Smith, iMPACT Outreach Director
