The Readings

Genesis 22:1-18 Abraham’s faith is tested Romans 8:21-29 Faith is tested by life’s sufferings Mark 1:12-15 Faith is tested by temptation

The Sermon “Our God Our Help in Ages Past”

1. Almighty God, You promised to be with Your Church forever. 2. We praise You for Your presence in this place of worship. 3. We ask Your ongoing blessing upon those who gather here.

The Acolyte Gabrielle Brandt + SOLI DEO GLORIA +

We remember our members who are celebrating birthdays this week—Gary Knipstein, Ben Moeller, Gunnar Cale, Luke Con-rad, Justin Jackson, Jacob Stoppenhagen, Jennifer Eidam, Dan Buuck, Alvin Witte, and Carsten Hudson. We also remember Amber Franz, who teaches upper grade English, as well as Jenny Koerner who teaches at St. Peter-Immanuel and our 5th and 6th grade Sunday School teacher, Stan Stoppenhagen. May our loving Savior direct, bless, and guide their lives.

May the Great Physician grant health and strength to all who are in need of His healing hand. We especially remember Ruby Werling (Extended Care, Adams Memorial), Barb Geyer (Lutheran), Pastor Hinkle (who is scheduled for knee replacement this week), Roger Ripley (Kim Schamerloh’s father-in-law), Amos Liechty (Monica Stoppenhagen’s father), Doris Thieme (sister-in-law of Evie Keuneke) who has returned home, Jim Staub (Angela Sielschott’s father), and Rick Steiner (Angie Werling’s cousin).

We remember those who are presently serving our country—Jason Putteet and Mike Brandt who are both in Afghanistan, Ja-cob Lee, Randy McAllister (Fern Riemke’s son and brother of Kim and Terry), and Chad Hall (Doris Conrad’s son-in-law). May the Lord protect and guide them in their missions.

We remember Don & Pat Buuck who celebrate their wedding anniversaries this Saturday. May our Heavenly Father remain at the heart of their home, blessing and guiding them through life’s joys and trials.

Today we will be dedicating the addition onto church. Yesterday we celebrated the chartering of our congregation 174 years ago. Our congregation has grown from 56 baptized members and 26 communicant members on February 25, 1838 to 628 baptized members and 488 communicant members on February 25, 2012. We now have more than 11 times the baptized members and almost 19 times the communicant members! We thank and praise God for allowing our church to grow and prosper. We pray that this addition will enhance our ability to reach out to our community. May our congregation continue to be a “Haven of Peace and a House of Hope.” We welcome all our special guests who have chosen to be at today’s dedication.

We also wish to give a special thank you to the Building Committee—Sam Baumann, Don Gehres, Larry Hitzfield, Dennis Wer-ling, and Mike Werling—as well as to all those who assisted them in their duties. They attended many meetings, as well as giving of their time and talents to complete this project. We are appreciative of the countless hours you devoted to this project.

Following today’s worship service and dedication, there will be light refreshments served in the Gathering Area. A special thank you goes out to Zwick & Jahn Funeral Homes who provided the cookies for today’s reception.

Congratulations to Zion – Friedheim on the completion and dedication of your new addition. Since one of the several uses for this new addition will include funeral services and visitations, Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home would like to donate a matching set of floor lamps for use in this new addition.

The flowers on the altar are to the glory of God and in loving memory of Alfred & Elsie Buuck. They have been placed in church by their family.

We thank Caleb Buuck for this morning’s solo during the offertory. We are blessed that we have individuals so willing to share their God-given gifts with the congregation.

Our mid-week Lenten worship services continue at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 29. Pastor’s sermon will be “Jesus I will Ponder Now” based upon John 18:5.

Included in this morning’s bulletin is our weekly study guide, “Time in the Word.” This week’s theme is “Lent is a Time of Suf-fering.”

Extra copies of the Lenten Devotional from Lutheran Indian Ministries can be found in either entranceway of the church. Copies of the devotional written by and for our Friedheim members based on Luther’s Small Catechism are also in the entranceways of church.

Board of Stewardship’s Food for Thought – "I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God…be transformed by the renewal of your mind...” (Romans 12:1, 2). God gave us life. He gives us the gift of wisdom that we might discern His will for our lives and intelligence to carry out His plan. He gives us bodies in which to accomplish His work. We are His hands and feet and mouth. As stewards, we present our bodies and minds in service to God in grateful response for all He has done for us.

The Busy Women’s Bible Class meets on Monday, February 27, at Tim & Kris Blomenberg’s. The LWML Thursday morning class will meet at 9 a.m. on Thursday, March 1, at the home of Dorothy Heckman’s.

Today’s greeters were Allen & Dan Buuck; next week’s, Gene & Irene Kiess. The Board of Outreach is excited to establish this greeter program and would like EVERYONE to participate. This is a great way to get to know mem-bers of our congregation! A sign-up sheet can be found in the south entranceway. Greeters are needed from March 11 on. Two greeters are needed for each Sunday (a couple or two individuals). Sign up today!

Cindy Wass is February’s coordinator for Meals of Grace. If you know of someone who could benefit from this min-istry, please contact Cindy (623-2209). Shirley Hormann (724-3101) is the coordinator for March. The freezer is getting a little empty. There is a special need for casseroles (family size as well as those for one or two), but all donations are appreciated. Please label the items (date and description) when placing them in the freezer. Thanks!

To help you attend our mid-week Lenten worship, with a little less hassle, the LYF will be serving supper prior to the worship service. Come over to the Parish Hall on February 29, beginning at 6 p.m., and enjoy a Mexican dinner with tacos and Spanish rice. What else is on the menu? Salad, applesauce, mixed fruit, dessert, and a drink (coffee, milk, juice, or water). A free-will donation is being accepted. Youth are asked to arrive by 5:30 p.m.

The selection of items in Roz’s Reading Room, located in the church basement, is fantastic. There is the Bible on tape, chi l-dren’s videos and books, fiction, non-fiction, and devotional materials, and even a few games! There are items for everyone

The April-June edition of the Portals of Prayer has arrived. You may pick up your copy as you leave the worship service this morning.

The baby yarn for the “Tiny Angels Comfort Kit” project is available in the church office. The blankets may be crocheted or knit-ted. Call the church office (547-4248) and make arrangements to pick up yarn. Please remember that the blankets need to be square (or as close to square as possible) and should measure between 12 inches to 18 inches in size. These blankets are used to wrap premature infants in prior to the parents holding them for that last goodbye. Completed blankets can be brought to the church office. If you would like to help with crocheting clothes or sewing outfits, please contact Jan Buuck (crocheting) or Bonnie Buuck (sewing). If you would like to see a kit, there is one in the Gathering Area.

The Fort Wayne Zone Lutheran Laymen's League Prayer Breakfast will be at 8 a.m. on Saturday, March 17, at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 1819 Reservation Drive, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Cost of the tickets will be $6 (indi-vidual) or $12 per family. See Al Hormann or purchase at the door the day of the event. The featured speaker will

be the Rev. Gregory Seltz, one of The Lutheran Hour speakers. Hope to see many members there.

The 2012 Membership Directories and the 2011 Annual Report can be found in either entranceway of the church. The Spring 2012 Lutheran Women’s Quarterly has arrived as has the April – June Portals of Prayer. The Quarterlies are in the south en-tranceway while the Portals of Prayer can be found in either entranceway. Please take a copy of each home with you.

Serving be-gins at 10 a.m. and continues until 1 p.m. The proceeds from this year’s dinner will go to debt reduction. We have been blessed with our members’ willingness to serve on committees and donate food. As you can see the list is going down, but there are still items needed. If you would like to donate any of the following, please contact one of the committee co-chairs—Phil & Sharon Franke (623-3992) or Sean & Betty Sielschott (724-3946)--today. If it’s easier, cash donations are gratefully accepted and will be used to purchase needed items.

What’s new with our SCRAP METAL DRIVE? Omni Source will be bringing out a dumpster to be placed in the parking lot for scrap iron only. The dumpster will arrive on April 3 and will remain here until April 15. If you have items that are too large to transport or you are unable to bring the scrap iron yourself, please contact Kathy Bultemeier (639-3636 or 260-403-2383) and arrangements will be made for pick up. If you wish to have a receipt for tax purposes, one will be provided upon request. If you would rather take the items directly to Omni Source, you may do so. Please let them know that

the items are being sold in the name of Zion-Friedheim Lutheran Church. The check will be made out to the church. Please give your name also so that it may be noted on the check. Old vehicles are also being accepted – you don’t have to take tires or other items off, but Omni Source does need a clear title for the car. At a later date there will be a trailer available for non-ferrous metals (stainless steel, brass, anything that isn’t made of iron). We need to keep the iron (ferrous) and non-ferrous ma-terials separate. If you wish to have items picked up, want to volunteer to help with this project, or have any other questions, please contact Kathy Bultemeier. Funds raised will be used to help finance our expansion project.

Your clothing donations for Immanuel House have been much appreciated. Immanuel House is open each Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Your clean, gently used items can be placed in the box in the Parish Hall near the east door.

Don’t forget to pick up your chicken halves this morning. There is a table set up in the Gathering Area. There are some extra chicken (18) halves available for sale this morning at only $5 per half.

The Adams County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is sponsoring a Garage Sale to be held in Zion Lutheran’s Fam-ily Life Center on Saturday, March 10, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you have items to donate to the sale (no clothing, please), con-tact Leesa Heckman (724-4340).

HELP!!! As you know the Purduettes are coming to Friedheim next Sunday, March 4. The Board of Stew-ardship will be hosting a reception for them immediately following the worship service. We know there are some great bakers at Friedheim and we are thankful for those who have volunteered to make cookies for that day; however, we still need more cookies. If you would be willing to donate cookies for that day, please con-

tact Deb Miller at 260-557-8988 as soon as possible. Your help would be much appreciated.

Order forms are available in either entranceway of the church for the Sunday, March 4, performance at the Erekson Theatre at Bellmont High School of the Purduettes and the Purdue Varsity Glee Club. The show will begin at 3 p.m. That morning the Purduettes will be the featured vocalists at our worship ser-vice. All tickets for the afternoon performance are $15 each and are reserved seating. The proceeds from the show will be divided between our church and the Bellmont Vocal Music Department. You will also have the opportunity to enjoy a buffet dinner at Bellmont with the performers and directors on March 4. If you would like to purchase tickets this morning, Dawn Buuck will be available in the Gather-ing Area after today’s worship service. Dinner tickets (a limited number are available for $10 each. This meal will be served from noon to 1:30 p.m. You may give Dawn a call (724-7952) if you have any questions.

The Lutheran Chorale, a group of over thirty singers from area Lutheran congregations, will begin practice on Tuesday, Feb-ruary 28, at 7 p.m. Practices are held at Wyneken Lutheran School on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month. Among other things, this spring and summer the Chorale will be singing at the Lutheran Life Village and at the Worship in the Park which is held at the Foellinger Theatre. New voices are always welcome! Come and be part of a special musical ministry! Please con-tact the Chorale's Director, Deb Miller (557-8988) for further information.

Our lost and found box continues to grow with items left behind in church or over in the Parish Hall. Take a mo-ment to look on the table set up in the Gathering Area this morning to see if any of them should go back home with you. Any items left after March 4, will either be given to Thrivent for their garage sale on March 10 or disposed of appropriately.

For the third year, we are partnering with Kids Against Hunger for an event at Wyneken on Saturday, March 31. How can you help? First, and most important, pray for the success of this event and for the work done by this organization. Second, volunteer your time to help with packaging the meals. There is a need for at least 200 volunteers. There will be two work shifts on the 31st – the morning shift runs from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., with the afternoon shift running from 1 p.m. 3:30 p.m. This is a wonderful oppor-

tunity for parents to volunteer with their children and work on a project together. Last year there were several three-generation family volunteers. Whether you are 8 or 88, there is a task you can perform. Please contact Jan Buuck by e-mail ([email protected]) or phone (260-639-3380) by March 24 if you are willing to give of your time. Third, financial support is vital. With the cost of one meal at 25 cents, our hope is to raise at least $12,500 this year and pack 50,000 meals. (Last year we packed 52,980 meals.) If we raise more funds, we will pack more meals. Three-fourths of the meals will remain in Adams, Allen, and Wells Counties with the remainder sent to Honduras. Any checks should be made payable to “Kids Against Hun-ger.” Since our church is coordinating this event, please send the donation to Friedheim (or you may place your check in an envelope marked “Kids Against Hunger” and put in the offering plate). To help in ordering the proper amount of supplies, fi-nancial contributions are to be received by February 29. If you have any questions, you may contact Pastor Dahling, Cindy Wass, or Jan Buuck. You can also Like us on Facebook – “Decatur Kids Against Hunger.”

Today we are collecting the food bags distributed a couple weeks ago for Kids Against Hunger. There are large soup pots in either entranceway of the church for you to place your donation. Remember the words of Jesus

recorded in Matthew 25:35-40 – For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in

prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’ Thank you for your donations and heeding the words of Christ.

Did you see the Rural King ad and the notice that any purchases made last week (February 12-18) would be eligible for a 5% match from them? If you made a purchase during that time period, would you please bring your original receipt to the church office no later than March 11. The receipts need to be turned in by March 12 to the store. Thanks!

The Preble Volunteer Fire Department invites all area residents to their 18th Annual All You Can Eat Pancake & Whole Hog Sausage Brunch on Saturday, March 3. Serving will be from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Preble Fireman’s Park Pavilion. A free will donation will be greatly appreciated with all proceeds going to support the Fire Department’s operations. Bulk sausage will also be sold. Thrivent is co-sponsoring this event and providing matching funds. If you would like to help, you may contact Phil Juengel (547-4260) or Dave Gaunt (223-1329).

High Schoolers, you are invited to the annual University Lutheran (ULu) at IU event on March 3-4. The Saturday-to-Sunday event gives high schoolers the opportunity to see campus ministry in action no matter what college they plan on attending. Be-ginning Saturday at 1 p.m. and ending after Sunday's brunch, we will enjoy answering questions, touring campus, worshiping together, and simply hanging out. Accommodations will be at the church; it's got a few couches (The pews aren't too bad ei-ther.) and a couple showers. The cost is only $10 per student and covers meals and a T-shirt. To register email [email protected] by Monday, February 27, and direct any questions to Gabriel, at [email protected] or (260) 445-6948 or Pastor Woelmer at [email protected] or (812) 336-5387.

Do you possess knowledge and skill for plumbing, electrical, roofing, painting, hanging pictures, etc.? The School Board needs help in identifying individuals who might be able to help with work on advice on handling issues in-volving the maintenance of our Wyneken school facilities. We are not asking for people to serve on a committee, but we are trying to compile a list of people who can help us out. The Wyneken community does a great job of volunteering. Handle with Care

We’ve all received fragile items in boxes that are marked “Handle with Care.” In some ways, the gifts we receive as stewards from God should be marked with the words “Handle with Care.” Shouldn’t we handle our blessings such as abilities, money, time, physical health, and relationships with utmost care? In essence, we are handling with care the blessings He entrusts to us when we are faithful and responsible with them. Realizing all of life is a gift helps us to receive with gratitude and to handle our blessings with care and thankfulness.

The Readings – Lent is a Time of Testing

Genesis 22:1-18– Abraham’s faith is tested – Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about.” Early the next morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.” Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?” “Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together. When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.” Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.” The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time and said, “I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.”

P: O Lord, have mercy on us. C: Thanks be to God.

Romans 8:21-29 – Faith is tested by life’s sufferings —that the creation itself will be liberated from its bond-age to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemp-tion of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself inter-cedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

Mark 1:12-15 – Faith is tested by temptation –At once the Spirit sent him out into the desert, and he was in the desert forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him. After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news!” P: O Lord, have mercy on us. C: Thanks be to God.
