And in the meantime, nuclear waste is going to cause much damage to the human race and environment. You killed those gifts when you killed those children. You took away my rightful opportunities to work with and inspire those people on behalf of the human race that I love so much. You do not yet understand that life is my gift. Life belongs to me. *”The Hound of Heaven,” a poem, by Francis Thompson (1859-1907).

Recently Pope Francis, on behalf of the Catholic Church, stated that the death penalty is now inadmissible. The death penalty for whatever crime is no longer an option. The Catechism of the Catholic Church will now be changed to reflect this decision.

This Pastor’s Column raises the issue of the death penalty. I first wrote this in May 2001. Please take time to read it and reflect upon your own views on the death penalty.

Timothy, my son! Why? For what reason? How could you, with such calm and reason, kill 168 innocent people, especially infants and children? Doesn’t life mean anything to you?

I know that you were trying to make a point, trying to get your perspective across to the world. I know it had to do with Waco, Texas, and the Branch Davidians. But taking revenge on innocent people in Oklahoma City is not justifiable. I do not understand the logic. Two wrongs do not make a right! Killing people in order to say that killing people is wrong just doesn’t make sense to me!

Timothy, I continue to love you. You are my son. I created you. I love you just as much as I love those 168 men, women, and children whose lives you cut short. They are with me now in my Reign, but they still had so much life to live! Some of them were going to make tremendous contributions to society.

You didn’t know, of course, but one of the infants you killed was going to find the ultimate cure for cancer. Now it will take decades more before that happens. And another child would have created the technology to harness the sun’s energy. In your lifetime, solar energy would have ended the need for nuclear power, coal, oil, and natural gas. Now it will take several more lifetimes before that happens.

It is not yours to take, for any reason.

Considering Becoming Catholic? If you have been thinking seriously about becoming Catholic (or know someone you can encourage), NOW is a great time to take the first step!

A new RCIA group is forming soon, and you’ll find benefit in being a part from the beginning.

Contact Kathleen Bell at 760-809-6526 or [email protected] to take the first step to a deeper relationship with God in a vibrant faith community.

Assistive Listening Devices The devices in this system allow you to hear sound directly in your ear, free from distance issues, room acoustics, and background noise.

Even if you do not use hearing aids, you can still benefit from the Assistive Listening System.

Our assistive listening devices consist of a wireless listening receiver which is connected to an ear speaker that provides clear and distinct sound to individuals with a hearing loss at any location in the Church.

The assistive listening device can be used with your hearing aids removed or placed over your hearing aid microphones.

The assistive listening device receivers and ear speakers are located in a case on the Parish information table on the Plaza. Please tell a greeter that you would like to use an assistive listening receiver and ear speaker. The ear speaker may be taken home and brought back each week for personal use. You may also bring your own ear buds or headphones. Our assistive listening receivers will accept any device with a standard 3.5mm audio cable plug.

Please be sure to return the assistive device receiver to the case at the end of Mass so that it can receive a full charge for the next use.

Congratulations to Morgan & Stacey Espe

who celebrated their 12th anniversary of marriage on August 5. Tomo & Cyndy Hamasaki

who celebrated their 41st anniversary of marriage on August 11. May God continue to bless your marriage, and may you be an

inspiration to other married couples.

Timothy, my son, you must be held accountable for your actions. I am compassion and love, but I also am justice. Your life spent for its entirety in prison is the price for your actions. It will never equal, in punishment and pain, what you did, but it is the most just response, from a human perspective.

You do not know this yet, Timothy, but your years in prison will be the space in which a great gift will be created and given to the human race. I am the “Hound of Heaven.” I am not going to give up on you. And you know what? Finally, after many years, you will open your arms wide to my love. You will experience an earth-shattering conversion. Your years in prison will be a time of great spiritual growth. Your discoveries about the gifts of my life and love will be shared with the world through the books you will write and the speeches you will give from your prison cell. Your immense sin will result in profound virtue and gift for the human race. Believe it or not, because of your unwavering witness to the gift of life from your prison cell, you will help more and more people to appreciate life. Amazingly, your witness will help to bring an end to the legalization of abortion in the United States, because the law will no longer reflect the beliefs of most Americans.

Oh, but Timothy, my son, this will never happen, because my people are doing to you what you did to my 168 loved ones! You are being killed in order to send the message that killing is wrong. That just doesn’t make sense to me.

I am being deprived of my opportunity to be the “Hound of Heaven” and to bring you into my circle of light and love. I just need more time with you. They are taking that time away from me just as you took that time away from the 168 in Oklahoma City.

How the world suffers and deprives itself of what I can do for it when anyone cuts life short.

I am so sad. I want to love all of you into peace, joy, and freedom, but you, humans, keep killing my chances to help.

Please, please, my people! Stop depriving me of my opportunities to be the “Hound of Heaven.”

Please let me be God!

Liturgy & Music Douglas Lynn Director of Liturgy and Music

Upcoming Music

The choirs and ensembles of our

music ministry are on summer break

through September 2.

This hiatus allows these volunteer musicians to sit with family and

friends during the liturgy and to

refresh the musical spirit that

allows them to sing and play with

vigor and deep spiritual

commitment.

Music rehearsals resume after Labor Day.

If you are interested in joining us in

September, please contact Douglas (see above right).

S o, how is the music we sing during the liturgy chosen? The

short answer is, “everything points to the Gospel.”

The complete answer is more complicated. While the primary point of reference is, of course, the Gospel reading, there are also the first and second readings, the psalm, and even the Entrance and Communion antiphons—if you want to dive really deep into all the scriptural references in the Mass.

There are many scripturally focused songs available for us to sing, but we use specific song lists from a number of publishers that reflect the varying traditions out of which this Parish has been formed. In addition to public domain songs (e.g., hymns like “Holy God, We Praise Thy Name”) that do not require permission from a copyright holder, we have sought and paid for permission to use songs from GIA Publications (e.g., “I Am the Bread of Life”), from Oregon Catholic Press (e.g., “Praise to You, O Christ Our Savior”), from World Library Publications (e.g., Sarah Hart’s “Christ the Lord”), and from Christian Copyright Licensing, Inc. (e.g., “Come, Now Is the Time to

Worship”). These licenses give us legal permission to print the music in our worship aids and provide income to the composers, arrangers, and lyricists so they can continue to write great music we want to sing.

These publishers and other music organizations create lists of possible songs for each Sunday and holyday. Over the years, I have taken these and created a Parish-specific database of the Church’s three-year cycle of readings that includes congregational songs as well as possibilities for the Sanctuary and Cappella Choirs and Tower Bells.

Let’s take a look at an example. We begin by looking at scripture. For the upcoming 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, on September 2, Jesus points out to us in the Gospel reading that our motivations, our thoughts, our inner workings all taint us and cause us to do evil. The Old Testament reading is part of Moses’ entreaty to the people to stay faithful to the Lord when they get to the Promised Land. The psalm reminds us that “the one who does justice will live in the presence of the Lord.” And, in the New Testament reading, James explains that the Word requires both hearing and action.

The readings (and the database) suggest “Praise to You, O Christ, Our Savior,” a Parish favorite that references the first, second, and Gospel readings. It is an easy choice for the Entrance song, as it also fulfils the Bishops’ instruction that the Entrance song “open the celebration, foster the unity of those who have been gathered, [and] introduce their thoughts to the mystery of the liturgical season or festivity” (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, 46).

With the text, “Deep within, I will plant my law, not on stone, but in

CHOOSING CONGREGATIONAL MUSIC FOR MASS Illuminating one mystery of the Church

your heart,” David Haas’ “Deep Within” would make a fine song for the Procession of the Gifts as it reinforces the themes of the Gospel and the first reading. It would also be appropriate for the Communion procession as it has a memorable refrain that people can sing while they are approaching to receive the Precious Body and Blood.

Fortunately, there is another choice for the Communion song in David Haas’ “Now We Remain” that illumines themes from the second reading in verse two and the Eucharistic banquet in verse three.

What I don’t have yet is a song from our “praise” repertoire, the songs that the Praise Team has introduced to us. None of our congregational “praise” songs seem to fit with the themes this week, but, looking ahead, there are many for next week, so we can double up then!

For our Recessional song, John Becker’s “Lead Me, Lord” reinforces the correct path to take to avoid the evil Jesus warns against in the Gospel, giving us the familiar Beatitudes (one verse of which is also our Communion antiphon this Sunday) to send us out into the world with joy!

Add in the Mass texts (the Gloria, etc.), choose a setting of the psalm, find out what our instrumentalists are planning for the prelude, and we’re on to the following week!

TOWERS OF FAITH

Future Support & Legacy Planning Options

Towers of Faith is a movement that has arisen due to the vision, leadership and generosity of several of our Parishioners. We stress that this is about the love and thought behind the gift, and not about the gift amount.

These individuals (several anonymous) have included STM in their estate planning. This helps to ensure their ongoing support and a legacy for our Parish. Towers of Faith is a valuable portion of our future support.

Examples of the various future planning vehicles are:

Designated Beneficiary Accounts, Wills, Living Trusts, Life Insurance, Stocks and Bonds, Real Estate, and

STM Endowment with CCFSD (Catholic Community Foundation of San Diego)

Parishioners who have already included STM in their estate plans are Towers of Faith participants. If you are interested, please contact us. Your participation is most welcome and appreciated!

Chris Smith at 760-758-4100 x120, or [email protected].

Do two or more members of your family know where to locate your Will, Living Trust,

and/or Health Directive?

Living as Christian Stewards is an ongoing process of conversion. As disciples who are committed to living our lives as good stewards, we must constantly be attentive to ways we are called to give and share. This is a process of discernment, in which we take stock of the ways we have been blessed and the gifts we have been given, and then consider what and how we are called to give back, as a grateful response to God.

Discernment is more than simply deciding something. It is a process that is carried out through prayer, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the wisdom, encouragement, and challenge of other faith-filled companions.

In our personal lives, we prayerfully decide how much money to give to our Parish or to a Catholic outreach organization, and we give much thought to what ministries need our time. We may talk with a good friend, fellow Parishioner, or spouse as we consider what is appropriate and how we are called to sacrifice.

Our discernment is a reflection of our growing relationship with Christ and a response to Christ’s call to love and serve.

Discerning for our faith community is a similar process. We all consider the needs of the poor and vulnerable in our local area, country, and world and what is needed to sustain or grow the worship, formation, community life, and service within our Parish or Diocese, and we plan accordingly.

As Christian Stewards, we must discern how to live and grow as stewards in this time and place.
