Pastor’s column

ResolutionsCan you believe that it is 2016already? To be perfectly honestit feels like we just finishedThanksgiving! Well, with a newyear come new possibilities. Will this year be like the last? Will things be different, or willthey stay the same? What NewYear resolution will you make? Will you actually go to thegym? The idea of “starting thisyear off right” is on everyone’smind, and it is a good thing. We

all want to “get off on the right foot”, but so often wefind ourselves falling into the same traps and pits thatwe fell in last year. I’m guilty myself! It seems likeevery year I make the same resolution, but fall flat onmy face; a fact that was proved recently as Jeanie andI spoke about the issue, and she said, “you said thesame thing last year…and the year before”! I, too, failat going to the gym!

God tells us “there is a time for everything, and aseason for every activity under the heavens”(Ecclesiastes 3:1, NIV). There is a time foreverything! Maybe last year was not the time forwhatever it was you were trying to do. Do not bediscouraged because you are a year older, or becauseit never worked out in the past; perhaps it was not thetime, yet! Remember that you are a new creation inChrist, and from the time you became this newcreation you have been growing in maturity. Maybenow you are ready, finally mature enough to achieveyour goal, to hold firm to your resolution.

So what resolution will you make? Make is one thatwill change your life. Yes I encourage you to go tothe gym. Yes I encourage you to spend more timereading Scripture. Yes I encourage you to reach foryour dreams. More important than all of these, Iencourage you to seek a deeper, more intimaterelationship with Jesus. What better resolution tomake than to spend this year really seeking God andHis will for you?

In Christ, Jacob

5x5x5 Bible Reading PlanThrough the New Testament in 5 days a week, 5 minutes a day

5 minutes a day. If you’re not currently readingthe Bible, start with 5 minutes a day. This readingplan will take you through all 260 chapters of theNew Testament, one chapter per day. The gospels areread throughout the year to keep the story of Jesusfresh all year.

5 days a week. Determine a time and location tospend 5 minutes a day for 5 days a week. It is best tohave a consistent time and a quiet place where youcan regularly meet with the Lord.

5 ways to dig deeper. We must pause in ourreading to dig into the Bible. Below are 5 differentways to dig deeper each day. These exercises willencourage meditation. We recommend trying a singleidea for a week to find what works best for you.Remember to keep a pen and paper ready to captureGod’s insights.

1. Underline or highlight key words or phrases in theBible passage. Use a pen or highlighter to mark newdiscoveries from the text. Periodically review yourmarkings to see what God is teaching you.

2. Put it into your own words. Read the passage orverse slowly, then rewrite each phrase or sentenceusing your own words.

3. Ask and answer some questions. Questionsunlock new discoveries and meanings. Ask questionsabout the passage using these words: who, what, why, when, where, or how. Jot down some thoughts onhow you would answer these questions.

4. Capture the big idea. God’s Word communicatesbig ideas. Periodically ask, What’s the big idea in thissentence, paragraph, or chapter?

5. Personalize the meaning. When God speaks to usthrough the Scriptures, we must respond. A helpfulhabit is personalizing the Bible through application.Ask: How could my life be different today as Irespond to what I’m reading?
