FAMILY FAITH MOMENTS
When we think of fasting as one of the disciplines of
Lent, we usually think of giving up some form of food.
But there are other ways of fasting, such as…
Fast from criticism, and Feast on praise.
Fast from self-pity, and Feast on gratitude.
Fast from a bad temper, and Feast on peace.
Fast from resentment, and Feast on contentment.
Fast from jealousy, and Feast on love.
Fast from pride, and Feast on humility.
Fast from selfishness, and Feast on service.
Fast from fear, and Feast on faith.
Celebrating the Church’s Lenten season at home.
Discuss, as a family, ways each member can fast from a
habit that prohibits him/her from being all God wants
him/her to be. What good habit can replace it?
JOURNEY with JESUS in LENT

CATECHISM CORNER Honest Pain
by Josh Miller
The point of prayer is to grow in
relationship with God. Looking at
our human friends or family, we find
that the deeper the relationship the
easier it is to express intense
emotions like anger. Show anger to
strangers or acquaintances, and
they will avoid you. Show anger to
your closest friend, and he won’t
go anywhere. He will listen. He will ask to know more.
Even if you are angry at him, if he values the
relationship, he will work through it with you.
At the end of the day, the friendship
will be stronger because of your honesty.
The catechism and scripture, particularly in the midst
of Old Testament sicknesses, show that this human
honesty applies to our relationship with God, too.
“The man of the Old Testament lives his sickness
in the presence of God. It is before God that he
laments his illness” (CCC /1502). Old Testament
lamentations don’t hold their punches. If a prophet is
going to complain to God, he’s going to tell it as it is.
Job, the iconic sufferer, makes this clear: “He [God]
has cast me into the mire; I have become like dust
and ashes. I cry to you, but you do not answer me;
I stand, but you take no notice. You have turned
into my tormentor, and with your strong hand you
attack me” (Job 30:19-21). Job is not looking to
excuse God. He tells God exactly how he feels.
He feels attacked. He feels unanswered.
The point of Job is not that we should go looking for
excuses to scream at God. The point is that many of
us have also felt attacked and unanswered. Illness
especially can feel like meaningless punishment.
Instead of pretending everything was alright, Job
trusted God enough to be honest with Him. Job
never forsook God. By expressing his anger and then
patiently awaiting God’s response (which included
blessings unimagined), Job has become the
greatest inspiration for how to suffer in a holy way.
Whatever we feel in this present moment of life,
whether it be anger, joy, despair, peace, isolation,
love, grief, comfort, etc., let us trust God like a close
friend. Let us be honest in prayer like Job was honest.
Having shared our hearts, may we have the time
and space to listen to Christ’s own heart
that Sacred Heart which bleeds for me.

high students at St. Peter. Josh can be contacted at

In this Season of Lent, sometimes we need
encouragement to persevere in our resolutions.
Please join us on Tuesday, April 2, at St. Peter for a

Johnson’s story, from Planned Parenthood’s Person
of the Year to Pro-Life Champion, and ultimately,
to the Catholic Faith. Theaters will continue to
show the movie for weeks to come if the demand
is high enough on opening weekend. Because of
this, please encourage family and friends to go
see it. The movie has an “R” rating.

FATIMA HOLY HOUR
for PEACE
Thursday, April 4, 2019 will be the 100th anniversary of the death of St. Francisco of Fatima, the youngest of the children who witnessed the Virgin Mary. The International Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary has requested that the parishes of the world celebrate a special Holy Hour for peace. Please join us in asking St. Francisco to pray for us as we pray for peace. St. Peter Church will celebrate the Holy Hour for Peace at 1:00 pm, with the praying of the Rosary with St. Peter School children; and will conclude at the Act of Consecration and Benediction at 2:00 pm.
Between May 13 and October 13, 1917, three Portuguese shepherd children received apparitions of Our Lady near Fátima. Francisco Marto was one of those children. At that time, Europe was involved in an extremely bloody war. Portugal itself was in political turmoil, having overthrown its monarchy in 1910. The government disbanded religious organizations soon after.
At the first appearance, Mary asked the children to return to that spot on the thirteenth of each month for the next six months. She also asked them to learn to read and write and to pray the Rosary “to obtain peace for the world and the end of the war.” They were to pray for sinners and for the conversion of Russia, which had recently overthrown Czar Nicholas II and was soon to fall under communism. Up to 90,000 people gathered for Mary’s final apparition on October 13, 1917.
Less than two years later, Francisco died of influenza in his family home. He was buried in the parish cemetery and then re-buried in the Fátima basilica in 1952. Pope Francis canonized Francisco on his visit to Fátima to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first apparition on May 13, 2017. The shrine of Our Lady of Fátima is visited by up to 20 million people a year.
