CHURCH OF ST. AUGUSTINE, LARCHMONT, New York AUGUST 06, 2017 THE TRANSFIGURATION OF THE LORD Pastors Corner HAPPINESS ATTACKS When I was a lile girl, I experienced Happiness aacks. At least thats what I called them. They were fleeng moments when everything seemed right in my world: my parents loved me, my siblings were fun, I was doing well in school, or my un- cle gave me two quarters. These aacks connued even as an adult: a student had an amazing insight into a piece of litera- ture, a colleague was exceponally kind, the words of a para- graph I was struggling with suddenly fell into place. In todays readings, people seem to be having happiness aacks all over the place. Daniel describes Gods glory and kingship—exuberantly. Peter shares the essence of Jesusown happiness: hearing God call him, my Son, my Beloved. And in the Gospel, Peter, James, and John are so happy they want to stay with Jesus on the mountaintop and prolong the euphoria forever. What can we learn from all of this? Gods presence in our lives is oſten hidden. But at parcular moments, Gods beauty or goodness or love breaks through the surface of our every- day. Such aacksmight not last long, but they serve as gen- tle reminders that God is working just beneath the surface of observable reality. And amid the trials, misunderstandings, and ambiguies of daily living, God is there, saying to each of us, You are my beloved son, my beloved daughter. And such divine affirmaon helps to sustain us, as it did Jesus, in our hard work of selfless loving. HAPPINESS ATTACKS When I was a little girl, I experienced “Happiness attacks.” At least that’s what I called them. They were fleeting moments when everything seemed right in my world: my parents loved me, my siblings were fun, I was doing well in school, or my un-cle gave me two quarters. These attacks continued even as an adult: a student had an amazing insight into a piece of litera-ture, a colleague was exceptionally kind, the words of a para-graph I was struggling with suddenly fell into place. In today’s readings, people seem to be having happiness attacks all over the place. Daniel describes God’s glory and kingship—exuberantly. Peter shares the essence of Jesus’ own happiness: hearing God call him, “my Son, my Beloved.” And in the Gospel, Peter, James, and John are so happy they want to stay with Jesus on the mountaintop and prolong the euphoria forever. What can we learn from all of this? God’s presence in our lives is often hidden. But at particular moments, God’s beauty or goodness or love breaks through the surface of our every-day. Such “attacks” might not last long, but they serve as gen-tle reminders that God is working just beneath the surface of observable reality. And amid the trials, misunderstandings, and ambiguities of daily living, God is there, saying to each of us, “You are my beloved son, my beloved daughter.” And such divine affirmation helps to sustain us, as it did Jesus, in our hard work of selfless loving. Melannie Svoboda, a Sister of Notre Dame of Chardon, Ohio. Give Us This Day, PP 70-71, August 2017.

ALTAR SERVERS Dear Girls and Boys of St. Augustin Parish: Our Pastor, Msgr. Kelly, has asked me to as-sume the position of coordinator of altar servers.

I am writing to ask you to seriously consider becoming a minister at the altar as an acolyte (altar server.) As a new member of the clergy here at St. Augustine, I am hop-ing that you will pray about this opportunity and respond positively to this appeal. The Ministry of Altar Server requires that you: 1) be a registered member of St. Augustine Parish; 2) have parental permission; 3) have received the Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Eucharist; 4) are entering 5th to 12th Grade this Fall; 5) participate in training sessions until ready; 6) be able to serve at least two times each month. I sincerely hope you will join the current team of Altar Servers in making our Parish liturgies a spiritually rich ex-perience. Please email me at [email protected] or leave a message at the parish office for me, 914-834-1220 so that we can meet and begin your training. Sincerely, Deacon Bob Gontcharuk

WELCOME SUMMER VISITORS! You are very welcome at St. Augustine. Please do not wait for the Kiss of Peace to greet the parishioners around you! We especially welcome children; as Jesus exhorted his apostles, “Let the little children come to me!” Coloring sheets for young children are in the plastic boxes at the end of each pew and crayons are at all of the entrances. Please return them to the box after Mass—-and post your child’s artwork on the fridge at home! In September, we will be starting up our Chil-dren’s Lectionary, when ages 4—9 are called up after the Gospel reading for a younger look at the Gospel message with Sister Suzanne Duzen, our Director of Religious Edu-cation. Our 10:30 Mass Children’s Choir will again lead us in praising the Lord in song, also in September. In the meantime, make yourselves at home! Our pastor and all of our Pastoral Associates would love to meet you on the front plaza after Mass.

SUMMER AT ST. AUGUSTINE During the quiet summer months we anticipate two changes for our Parish Community.

1– I am happy to welcome Deacon Robert Gontcha-ruk who has been assigned to the staff of St. Augustine Church. Deacon Bob has served over twenty years at the neighboring parish of Holy Name of Jesus in New Rochelle. Join me in welcoming him to St. Augustine Par-ish. 2—Our church is receiving a new coat of paint after twenty plus years. A committee of six parishioners are very involved in the discussion and selection of the color palette.

THE MEANING OF THE EUCHARIST We, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf. “In 1st Corinthians, Paul is trying to emphasize what Jesus is teaching us when we come together in the Eucharist: we are committed to reach out to all people, draw all people together with us so that we can recognize the body of Christ in every person. It’s important to look at the poor person, the refugee, and the one fleeing from danger, the one that needs clothing, food and drink.” Thus Fr. Thomas Gumbleton reminds us of St. Paul’s call to Eu-charist. (Travelling this summer and cannot come to Mass at your parish? Go to Masstimes.org to find local churches and the times of all of the Masses in the area, in one listing.)

BISHOP BARRES’ SERIES The commuter delays and public transportation service disruptions that have become all too familiar this summer can test the most patient among us. Bishop John Barres sees the delays and disruptions as yes, challenging and frustrating but also opportunities for finding Catholic spirit-uality. In the new video-blog series ‘A Catholic Spirituality of Commuter Delays,” Bishop Barres gives commuters one-minute daily nuggets of spiritual truths to help when deal-ing with the challenge of commuting this summer. Pro-duced by TelecareTV, the diocesan television station (www.telecaretv.org) and co-hosted by Rev. Msgr. James Vlaun, President and CEO, TelecareTV, the series will run in July and August, on www.drvc.org, Facebook—LICatholic.org and www.telecaretv.org.

BIBLE DONATIONS If anyone has any new or gently used Bibles that they would like to donate to a local hospi-

tal, please leave them in our rectory porch; Attention Chaplain Rosemary. Thank you
