¡Bendiciones!

Use it or lose it! We often say that “over familiarity breeds contempt.”, By that we mean that we tend to lose respect for things we are too familiar with. Many of us take for granted people or things that are easily available to us. For example, we easily lose respect for people with whom we have lived for a long time. Many tend to be contemptuous of jobs they’ve done for a long time. But contempt for the over-familiar also happens a lot in religion. Many people grow tired of or bored with their cradle religions. This was definitely true for a good number of Israelites. Many of them lost their fervor with God and the practices of Judaism, becoming unfaithful and sinful. They dishonored, persecuted and killed several prophets sent to them. Jesus experienced similar treatment from the pharisees, the scribes and the people of his village. “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town and in his own home”, he said (Mt 13:57). He lamented this tendency among his people: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing” (Mt 23:37). Unfortunately, this is a universal human problem. A lot of cradle Catholics have become contemptuous of the Church as well. They have grown cold in their faith, tired of the holy rituals of the Church and indifferent to God. Going to church is literally a drag for many. Consequently, spiritual death has become commonplace among Catholics and Christians in general. However, both in Judaism and Catholicism, several outsiders have shown great faith in God and a great appreciation of these religions. At various occasions, Jesus praised the faith of Gentiles. He called ‘a Canaanite woman’ a woman of “great faith” (Mt 15:28). To the Roman centurion he said, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith” (Mt 8:10). Like everything else in life, if we don’t nourish our faith, it dies. If we don’t use our faith, we will lose it – it will be taken away from us (Mt 25:24-30). The same is true with every relationship, if it is not nourished it will die. It’s not enough to come to Mass or go to Confession every once in a while. We must be committed in growing our faith. We must be committed to prayer, fasting and charity. We must be committed to learning more about our faith and evangelization. Blowing hot and cold is unacceptable to God (Rev 3:16). Boredom is tantamount to spiritual death. Ask God regularly for the gift of the Holy Spirit who will constantly renew your faith and enkindle in you the fire of the divine love. Blessings!

August 16, 2019 / 16 de Agosto del 2020 3

I feel like time is passing by so strangely lately. I can’t believe we are already in mid-August and we are rapidly approaching the start of our programs. It feels like it takes forever for the week to pass but when it does it feels like you achieved a ton and nothing the same time. It feels like changes are constantly happening but at the same time it feels like we are not making any progress. But when it is all said and done the one thing that I find constant during these times is our faith. Our faith has been manifested in so many forms lately for example, online, streaming Masses, then being in the church, to now having outdoor services, but yet, our faith is still the same no matter where we are practicing it. What is difficult right now is keeping our faith strong, especially when it feels like everything is against us. Our faith is not just in our church but it is in our homes, everywhere we go, because it is in each one of us. It is our job to strengthen our faith and to continue to find ways to do so. Faith is not something that is static but something that you grow in and continuously work on. Now more than ever we need to work harder at keeping a strong faith. Be strong, be faithful, and know that we are here praying for all of you during this difficult time in our world. Upcoming: Confirmation Registrations due at the end of August

Online Bible Study

The Gospel of St. Matthew – Part 2 (Chap 17-28) Beginning September 2nd Wednesday Evenings

7:00 – 9:00 PM

Having a Mary Heart… in a Martha World? You want to be everything for everybody? Every day is crammed full of things-to-do. Responsibilities, demands, and it is hard to find time for the things that are most important.

Mary sat at Jesus’ feet listening to what He said….What you long for…

What you need…Isn’t found in doing more…It’s found by sitting at His feet…

Find what you were made for – intimacy with God in the busyness of life.

Restrictions brought on by the COVID-19 virus have left us unable to meet face to face, as we had in the past, but with change, new doors open. Our mission to become disciples and evangelize will continue as we dive into the journey of the Gospel of St. Matthew, the first book of the New Testament. This study is open to anyone who “is” or “is not” familiar with the Bible. This study will help you open your eyes and ears to the Lord and develop an intimate relationship with Jesus. We meet via Zoom on Wednesday nights at 7:00 PM, and anyone can join in at any time. Questions regarding registration? Call or text Gloria Garcia (805) 358-6299 or George Williams (805) 469-7811 or send an email to [email protected]

August 16, 2019 / 16 de Agosto del 2020 7 WHY PRAY? The “foreigners” as Isaiah calls them, the “Gentiles” as Paul calls them, or the “Canaanites” as Matthew calls them are called to worship the one true God in prayer. As we listen to today’s readings, perhaps we are tempted to ask: Why pray? The question is rhetorical; it is tanta-mount to asking why should friends talk to one another or people in love kiss one another. Prayer is a way of relat-ing to God, a way of talking to God. The apostles had the opportunity to talk to Jesus in the flesh. We have the op-portunity to talk to Jesus Christ in prayer. Our relation-ship with him must be enthusiastic; it cannot be faint-hearted. John Donne, a fifteenth-century poet, knew what the qualities of good prayer were. Donne asks God to treat him differently from most Christians. The poet does not want God to merely “knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend,” but also to “break, blow, burn, and make me new” (Holy Sonnets, XIV). It takes a dynamic faith on our part to come to God in prayer. As Jesus once said, “Knock and the door will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7). It may take pounding the door down, but if we are as persistent as the woman in today’s Gospel, the results will follow. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

DID YOU KNOW? Back to school preparations during

a pandemic

In August, families are usually preparing to start a new school year, with all the excitement and anxiety that brings. But this year, in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, no one knows what lies ahead for school children. Talk to your children about how they’re feeling and what they’re worried about. Many people, including

young children, are struggling with anxiety and depression during this pandemic, so be sure to check in frequently, and provide a safe space where children can talk about their concerns. For more information, visit https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.
