THE TREASURER’S TALES - NOVEMBER 2017November is the month for Thanksgiving and November 1922 was no

The taste of ramps is much stronger than onions. To compound matters, Rebekah told Elizabeth to put dry parsley in with the celery and onions. Elizabeth found a jar of dried oregano with no label and used it. She sauteed the vegetables in a pound of butter,

it in an old pillow case and then into the ice box till the turkey was to be stuffed the next morning.

not sure she liked the shape, so she rolled the pie dough out a number of times to get a perfect circle. She was never told about building up gluten in pie dough. After lining the pie plates with dough, Elizabeth

turned the pies back to Elizabeth, to cover the mincemeat and bake both the mincemeat and the pumpkin.

While the pies were in the oven, Elizabeth started making cranberry sauce. She used a recipe very similar to this recipe: https://www.bettycrocker.com/recipes/simple-cranberry-sauce/6da677a9-b077-47ae-9a81-d8fcc5 e0529a, except she used all the sugar earlier. She thought that honey would be as good as sugar, and Barney had several gallons of honey in the pantry. Elizabeth used the same amount of honey as she would have used sugar. Since honey is sweeter than sugar, the result can be imagined, read here:

Barney took a spoonful of the cranberry sauce and he needed a drink of water. The cranberry sauce was sweeter and thicker than usual and left an aftertaste. There was no discussion about the shortcomings of the meal, just chatter about the impending winter.

All settled down for coffee and pie. The smell of the mincemeat was pleasant and spicy.

Her mother, Alice, never had a problem with her pie crust. Although a bit disappointed, she said nothing. Later she asked Barney if everything she did was bust. Barney reassured her that she was a great cook, but needed to get used to the coal/wood stove, since Alice had a gas stove. When he went out to feed the pie crust to the dogs, Barney took the remainder of the dried ramps off the porch and threw them in the burn pit.
