April 1, 2003 – March 31, 2004president’s messageBCSS - Building Momentum

Over the year, I’ve been oen reminded how the BCSS experience has evolved over the years of our history.

And as we plan for the future, I am keenly aware of how important it is to preserve the outstanding strengths of our Society.

It is a fact that good organizations have to change in order to be effective. BCSS is not the same as it was twenty years ago, and it will not be the same twenty years from now. We’ve had to learn a great deal about planning and governance, and about how complacency can be risky. As Mark Twain said, “You can be on the right track, but if you just sit there, you’ll get run over.”

BCSS is clearly on the right track and moving forward. Our Society’s vision is best addressed by reflecting on the accomplishments highlighted in this Annual Report. The list of our successes is impressive. The Emerald Eve, Wine Festival, Boat Raffle and Golf Tournament all helped us raise funds while raising our profile. New organizational initiatives with the Calder Foundation, the Schizophrenia Society of Canada (SSC), and the BC government’s Partners for Mental Health and Addictions are bringing us new colleagues and innovative ideas. Our educational efforts have resulted in a brand new, all-Canadian national family education program. Our “Reaching Out” program for high schools is now available across the country thanks to funding from Health Canada. Our unique Translation Project is truly international in scope, helping people around the world. The announcement of Mr. Wayne Nygren as our Honorary Patron has brought distinction. And, of course, receiving the BC Association of Broadcasters Humanity Award has been immeasurably valuable to our cause. Finally, as we continue to change, evolve and expand - a big welcome to our new BCSS branch in Quesnel.

This year has seen the most significant advance in our organization ever.

>>>BCSS members, directors and staff continue to demonstrate what I already know through my own experience - that our Society is strong and vital. But there is always a need for more consistency, for beer coordination across the organization, and for clearer communication on many levels. It has become increasingly obvious that we have to adjust our thinking so that we operate less in terms of our divisions and more as an inclusive entity. Our ability to successfully adjust is shown in the astonishing fact of this year’s accomplishments - and will continue to be reflected in our future efforts on behalf of the Society.

Our mission is to alleviate the suffering caused by schizophrenia through support, education, advocacy and fundraising. The positive spirit with which volunteers, directors and staff have involved themselves in this process of serious self-examination is proof of their first-rate principles, and of their strong loyalty to our mission. In the coming year, we will continue to focus on our strategic plan and to outline our goals for the future.

Local, regional and national perspective is the key to our success in achieving the innovation and opportunity needed to give people with mental illness and their families the support they need and deserve. I look forward to hearing from you in our ongoing process of discussion and planning. Thanks to each individual who has contributed towards helping us achieve so many extraordinary goals over our history, and to all who continue to help us change and grow as we move confidently into the future.

ANNUAL REPORT 2003 - 2004BRITISH COLUMBIA SCHIZOPHRENIA SOCIETY

ANNUAL REPORT 2003 - 2004BRITISH COLUMBIA SCHIZOPHRENIA SOCIETY

In the Spring of 2003, BCSS was advised that the funding we receive annually from the Provincial Government would be

drastically reduced and reallocated to support the provincial government’s new information/education plan, BC Partners for Mental Health and Addictions Information. This meant that BCSS would not longer be in a position to provide the programs and services we have come to be known and respected for such as Family-to-Family and BRIDGES. Additionally, we would no longer be able to produce and distribute BCSS brochures, booklets, manuals, videos and other education materials, or our “Friends” newsleer.

Facing a future of great uncertainty, the BCSS Board of Directors held a strategic planning session in September of 2003. The purpose was to evaluate all aspects of BCSS, set realistic priorities and to then identify and develop a future plan that was viable and responsive to our changing environment.

Through this process, fundraising was clearly identified as the highest priority and aer reviewing a 2002 survey by Ipsos Reid regarding the non-profit sector in BC it was evident that our path would be a difficult one. BCSS was nowhere on the radar map when it came to identifying the charities considered “Top of Mind” in British Columbia. The competition for the donor dollar is an increasing challenge given that there are over 9,000 registered charities in BC alone.

We of course know that BCSS is a province wide family support organization whose focus is on schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses. Our education programs are innovative; we advocate effectively; have built strong relationships and partnerships; and have developed forward thinking approaches to fund development. Unfortunately, other than those within the industry and the families and individuals that we service, nobody else knew who we were.

It was then very obvious to us that we needed to be more proactive and creative in aracting new donors, corporations and sponsors in order to raise the necessary funds needed to keep our

doors open. We developed a comprehensive Fund Development/Marketing Plan; looked at ways to increase our current fundraising strategies; reviewed our promotional and educational materials; and investigated new funding sources.

To our delight, aer submiing a proposal to the BC Association of Broadcasters, BCSS was chosen as the 2003-2004 winner of the BCAB Humanity Award. This was an incredible achievement as the award provided us with the means to develop an advertising campaign that would run 8 to 12 times per week on every public radio and television station throughout the province for a full year. The value of the Humanity Award is an astounding $3.5 million!

Together with our advertising agency, Elevator Strategy (formerly Glennie Stamnes Strategy) we formulated our goals and objectives for the campaign and identified our target audience. Our campaign slogan, “We’d Like to Change Your Mind”, was chosen because it clearly stated what we were trying to accomplish. We focused on the misconception of a split personality for the television ads and talked about aitudes towards schizophrenia and included statistics such as 1 in a 100 for radio.

In addition to the BCAB ads, we launched a Marketing Campaign appropriately entitled “We’d Like to Change Your Mind” that included such things as redesigning our website; developing new print and promotional materials; presentations; print advertising; as well as establishing new relationships and partnerships.

We are extremely grateful to the BC Association of Broadcasters for providing us with this opportunity. Not only were we successful in reaching out to British Columbians in all corners of the province, we were able to increase the awareness and understanding of schizophrenia and serious

mental illness amongst the general public. People are beginning to talk more openly about serious mental illness without fear. We also saw an increase in donations through future gis; developed new partnerships and had many new people come forward to volunteer their time.

Our campaign has been a great success. However, we still have much to do and many more people to reach. We believe we have merely scratched the surface and are on the edge of breaking through some of those barriers. We hope to continue to feel the effects of the campaign for a long time to come and greatly value the support of our donors and sponsors. We are looking ahead optimistically to a successful future for BCSS - one that sees us independent of government funding and able to provide the best possible services for families and their loved ones suffering from schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses.

ANNUAL REPORT 2003 - 2004BRITISH COLUMBIA SCHIZOPHRENIA SOCIETY

BCSS Translation Project

Thanks to the success of our BCSS Translation Project, information about schizophrenia is now available through our website www.bcss.org in Punjabi, Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Chinese, Spanish and French. The BCSS website is linked to other major mental health sites around the globe.

At the October 22, 2003 celebratory reception for the BC consular corps, volunteers and other distinguished guests at Vancouver’s Terminal City Club, then-Minister Gulzar Cheema asserted that the Translation Project is an achievement of historical importance. “It gives me great pleasure to help launch this historic site as a unique vehicle for communication to help people

2003 saw BCSS develop a new partnership with the Rotary Club of Burnaby through their annual wine festival. Along with the Burnaby Hospital Foundation, we jointly organized the Rotary Club’s 18th Annual festival. The event took place in November of 2003 and featured the wines of Chile, great entertainment, a silent auction and fabulous food. We’re looking forward to working with these organizations again as we plan the 19th Annual Wine Festival.

“Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success.”

It’s been an extremely busy fundraising year for BCSS - one that has seen us develop an exciting innovative Marketing Campaign, new materials, new partnerships. We’ve also met and helped many families, are thinking outside the box of ways to move ahead and are more optimistic of BCSS’s future. We are looking forward to what 2004-2005 brings and we wish to thank you for your continued support and loyalty.

With the reallocation of our government funding, fundraising took on an entire new level of importance in 2003. Winning the BC Association of Broadcasters Award was a huge achievement allowing us the means to become more visible in communities throughout the province, not to mention providing us with the best opportunity possible of raising awareness and understanding of serious mental illness. Our campaign slogan “We’d Like to Change Your Mind” was carried through into all of our fundraising events and initiatives.

The Campion Allante Summer Boat Raffle continues to be our largest and most effective fundraiser. It has become one of the most valuable means of raising awareness, increasing BCSS’s profile in the community and geing the word out. Our partnership with Campion Marine is one that we value more than words can say. Their generosity and support has meant so much to BCSS and we are extremely grateful to the entire Campion Marine family.

Our 2nd Annual Golf Classic took place at the University Golf Club on August 20, 2003. It was a day filled with great golf, great company, great food and lots of fun. This again is a tremendous means of raising awareness and increasing our profile to an entirely different group of individuals who would not normally know who we are.

Emerald Eve “A Night in the Caribbean” was a great success. This, our signature event, has been instrumental in opening new doors and building stronger relationships. Each year the commiee comes up with innovative ideas to raise more money and aract more guests.

Emerald Eve

Partnering with the National Schizophrenia Society of Canada Recognition of the need for a Canadian family education program resulted in BCSS and SSC collaborating in the development of a national and bilingual family education program -- “Strengthening Families Together”. “Strengthening Families Together” is about strengthening family members and friends of a person with a serious mental illness by providing support, awareness and tools. BCSS was the lead partner in the development, implementation and evaluation of this program in consultation with an advisory group comprised of representatives from across Canada. The program is designed to be taught by a team of two volunteer family members and consists of ten modules covering a range of topics from descriptions of mental disorders, medications, communication and problem-solving skills, advocacy etc.

In the fall/spring of 2003/2004 the program was pilot-tested in 3 English communities (Victoria, British Columbia, Calgary, Alberta, and Kentville, Nova Scotia) and 1 French community (Montreal, Quebec). Plans are moving ahead to launch the program nationally in the fall of 2004.

BCSS also joined with SSC to nationalize the “Reaching Out: The Importance of Early Treatment” resource. Created by BCSS, “Reaching Out” features a 20 minute video and full teacher resource kit, all designed to improve understanding of schizophrenia and assist in early intervention and treatment. SSC successfully obtained a Canada Health grant to nationalize the resource and translate it into French. To date 4,200 out of the 5,000 kits produced have been distributed to high schools across Canada.

SSC in collaboration with BCSS and the other provincial schizophrenia societies have also created a Federation Agreement that will help to strengthen the schizophrenia societies across Canada and clarify beer how the societies will work together towards improving the quality of life of individuals impacted by schizophrenia.

BC Partners for Mental Health and Addictions InformationBCSS has joined as part of a group of seven leading provincial mental health and addictions organizations working together as the BC Partners for Mental Health and Addictions Information. The collaborative was formed as a result of the recognition that people need to have access to quality information on mental health, mental disorders and substance use problems and disorders. The focus is on “evidence-based” resources and supports that have been shown to be effective through high-quality research studies. The project will create a permanent communications infrastructure, including a web site and a series of practical resources developed to help individuals and their families who are living with (or at risk for) mental health or substance use problems manage their health conditions on a day-to-day basis.

Forging New Ground: PARTNERSHIPS

Physicians and non-English speaking families caring for people with schizophrenia can now easily access critical information and facts for families through the internet.

with serious mental illness everywhere.”

BCSS embarked upon this multilingual project two years ago, making a commitment to reach out and try to provide information to non-English speaking families dealing with schizophrenia in BC. Through the use of modern technology – namely, by using our website on the internet – we realized that we could reach out not only to British Columbians, but indeed, to the rest of Canada and the world. Thanks to an initial grant from the World Association for Mental Health, the support of the late Dr. Chuni Roy, and the work of our amazingly dedicated volunteers, we have been able to make it happen. A great big thank you to everyone involved!
