in 2010. Although a (slightly) lower turn out than the previous year, 31 members and guests made it to Upper Claremont and with the help of a bubbly welcome drink, were soon in animated discussion.

Henk and Ine were again responsible for the arrangements –it must be the eighth year in a row that they have done so- and were complimented on their choice of fine dining paired with good wines.

We are looking for a new venue for next year’s END-YEAR function and welcome suggestions.

Dear EditorTony Brown talked about the ex John Burbige car, where he said I am the new owner of that car. However, that’s not correct.

I did, however, previously own a racing E-type as pictured in your magazine. But that car illustrated is not John Burbidge one. The ex-Burbidge E-type is owned by somebody else who is a Doctor near the North of France.

These pictures of the ex John Burbidge car were taken before Le Mans Classic, during it’s restoration.I just wanted to re-establish the facts. Best regards,Gaël [email protected]

I have been away for some time and unfortunately have not had a chance to put something interesting together for “From the Chair” for this edition of the Journal.

However, I will say that “Once again the year has simply flashed by and we all hope that 2011 will be a better year than 2010, which was due to the economic meltdown. The retail trade has generally shown a vast improvement, as well as the motor trade, which is very encouraging for all, particularly those involved in those trades

I would like to wish all members and their families a Happy, Healthy & Prosperous New Year.”

Kind Regards,

From tHEcHair

Past EvENt

Remember that the famous MONTE CARL RALLIES had different starting points? This RUN had similarities with those arrangements. Two members had not read the latest instructions and assembled at Engen on the N1; Bill & Margaret Cunningham wisely did not first travel to Somerset West, and then retrace their steps to Grabouw, so they started

from Hermanus. For Walter & Heide Blaser –who live in Worcester- it also made sense to drive directly to the Nuy Valley, but the majority –nine cars- “opted” for the main starting point, the Engen on the N2. All arrived safely and on time at Willow Creek, a restaurant in the Nuy Valley, also renowned for its olive products. The weather was perfect, the food wholesome and

good wine available which all added up to an enjoyable lunch.

Chairman’s wife Nicci tested our intelligence with a quiz, but I regret that I cannot recall who was the winner but he or she or they got almost all answers right. Well Done! We all returned home with happy memories of this last Outing of the year. A BIG thank you to Nicci and Chris!

FUtUrE EvENtsinternational Historicracing at KillarNEY,5-6 FebruaryAs usual February will be a busy month. It kicks off on the first weekend of the month, Saturday and Sunday 05 and 06 February, with International Historic Racing at KILLARNEY which includes events for Historic Sports

& Grand Touring Cars, Single Seaters & Motorcycles. There will also be an opportunity again, on Sunday, to display your car – provided it is built before 1985 – and do a few laps on the track. At the time of typing this, I have not seen the programme, but I am sure that many aficionados will find their way to Killarney and that the clubhouse will, as usual during the “David Piper weekend”, be humming.

the George show,12-13 FebruaryClassic car enthusiasts will head for GEORGE, another event that seems to grow in stature year by year. Sponsorship has been obtained from MIDAS and an auction for prestigious and classic cars - the Protea Hotels Classic Car Auction - will be held on Saturday, an event set to become an anticipated annual fixture on the back of the George Old Car Show.

It is the intention again to do an organized drive to George and we hope that many of you will join us and display a Jaguar or Daimler at the Show on Saturday. More news by email in due course. Meanwhile please start preparing the car you intend to take to the GEORGE SHOW.

FUN-rUN, 20 FebruaryOur first fun run for 2011 will be followed by LUNCH at Christine’s at ASHANTI, DRAKENSTEIN. Previously run by Marc Friederich, and frequently visited by our club, this restaurant has recently re-opened and is now managed by Christine and Gerrit Veldsman. According to their website it offers a unique setting to enjoy a meal by the 20 hectare dam. The sparkling water of the lake reflecting the light from sky and mountains could be a painting from the old masters. Aura and I will check it out soon after our return from the Drakensberg and you will then be invited to book for this Outing in the usual way.

annual General meeting, 24 FebruaryIt will be held at the clubhouse at Killarney at 19h00 for 19h30. This is an important event, regrettably often poorly attended resulting in limited feedback from you, the members. Please make an effort to attend. There are vacancies on the committee which need to be filled, so we look forward to seeing at least a few members volunteering to assist with the efficient running of the club

Well, this will have to be a brief affair since I am just back from England where we passed a very

agreeable New Year including the usual and compulsory – as far as I am concerned – New Year’s Day classic and VSCC (Vintage Sports Car Club) meet, this time in the New Forest. More on that next month, since the publishing deadline looms and while some of you – God bless you! – are writing in with information, I

haven’t yet had time to sort it all and formulate a full article.

So, this month I’ll content myself with the details of Kevin Webb’s replica C-type, of which I wrote some months, if not a year or so back. Like me, Kevin had Andy Thomas of Classic Chassis build a car for him, except that he built mine to bodywork level and then CKL did the rest. Kevin, on the other hand, bought a standard C-Type body from Classic

Chassis and has been steadily finishing the car himself. He now has it up to painting level it seems and here are some of the photos.

The first photo, rear skin off, shows just how big the fuel tank is, although this looks smaller than those originally fitted in the 1950s which held 40 gallons (180 litres)! I know mine looks big enough and that only holds 27 gallons, but again looks smaller than this one.

The second photo shows in detail the air

box and the sand-cast H8 SU carburettors, plus the added correct detail for twin coils, always black and silver or gold in their time. The engine breather disappears under the car but I’d counsel Kevin to think about putting a catch tank bolted to the passenger scuttle and running the pipe into it. I had so many problems with smoke haze behind, and that cured it entirely. Also, is the piping proper breather material? Mine wasn’t and unravelled itself; just a note of caution Kevin from someone who has previous experience.

Photo 2 gives the clue to the above advice; the manifolds aren’t dirty, rusty (they will be!) and the flexibles are still unflaked so the engine hasn’t run enough to discover the problems mentioned above.

Picture 3 shows the dashboard in place but awaiting painting and the gearbox and bell-housing all pristine.

Photo 1 shows the almost completed car. My felicitations to you Kevin, and keep me informed as things come along further. She surely will be a credit to all the work you have put in. Keep the dream alive. 4. Rear showing fuel tank and twin fuel pumps.

For salE

This car was built in 1960 in the UK and shipped as CKD to Blackheath, Cape Town, where it was assembled. It was supplied to a Durban dealer and registered in 1961. The first owner was John Boyce (late husband of Anne), a member of the VCC in KZN, and the original owners handbook has his signature. The last owner was Colin Downie, also a VCC member, who ran it for about 25 years. I bought it in 2003.

Originally yellow, it spent some 30 years wearing red but was restored to yellow. All major components are original but have been overhauled where necessary from 2004 onwards. It has been used locally as a runabout, mostly weekends.

The car did well in Concourse judging at VCC KZN in 2006, and has been complimented by enthusiasts on its originality and condition.

An overhauled 1100cc motor, with slightly larger carbs and a new exhaust system were fitted in late 2007 to improve driveability.

The gearbox was overhauled. Other details include: Personalized number, spare fan belt, magazines, special tuning handbook, side screens, tonneau, photocopied old workshop manual, soft top, new battery, original drivers handbook, 5 new tyres.

The “Frog Eye” is the most sought after collectors’ car of the Sprite/Midget range, and world wide is recognized as a collector’s car.

Known as a “Bug Eye” in USA. Prices will continue to rise on this type of collector’s car, with good examples in UK going for GBP7000 to 9000.Costs over the past 5 years exceed R100,000

PRICE: R85 000
