CHANCELLOR HANS BRISCH SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Chancellor’s Scholars Program was established by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education in 1990 with privately raised funds. Most of the funds were raised on the occasion of Dr. Hans Brisch’s 50th

birthday and his 2003 retirement. After Chancellor Brisch’s death in February 2006, the Oklahoma State Regents renamed the program the Chancellor Hans Brisch Scholarship Program as a living legacy to his dedication to the students of Oklahoma. Chancellor Glen D. Johnson continues the traditions of the program, which honors not only Chancellor Brisch but also the offi ce of the Chancellor and all individuals who hold that offi ce. Chancellors Brisch, Risser, Moss, Johnson, staff and colleagues have contributed professional honoraria to the Chancellor’s Scholarship Program corpus. Recipients are academically talented high school seniors with outstanding leadership ability and a commitment to the enhancement of their community. Community commitment is demonstrated through the students’ involvement in high school and/or community programs or projects, which has resulted in an improvement of the learning environment of the school or the social betterment of the community. The fi rst Chancellor’s Scholars were recognized in fi scal year 1993. To date, 61 outstanding young persons have been honored with this prestigious award. For the upcoming 2021 academic year, two outstanding students have been named Chancellor’s Scholars, and they will bring a vibrant, energetic presence to Oklahoma campuses, adding to the intellectual environment that fosters student success.

Emily Faith Sanders, Epic High School (Kingfi sher), has contributed over 5,000 hours in community service and one of her greatest passions has been working with the Granville Community Music School. At Granville, she

prepares and teaches music classes that include piano, guitar, and voice lessons to underprivileged children.

She has volunteered with various service projects, such as Folds of Honor and Gui-tars for Vets, where she raised money to help with a ceremony of retiring American fl ags. Guitars for Vets helps veterans integrate back into society after being deployed and gives them an outlet to express their feelings through the guitar. Veterans are given 10 guitar lessons and upon completion of the lessons they receive their own guitar. Emily has led an Oklahoma Music History program with the Opry Heritage Series for over 6,000 students.

As president of the Children’s Hospital Foundation Teen Board, Emily organized fundraisers and connected with the kids being treated at Children’s Hospital. She continued her passion of serving others with the American Heart Association and Go Red For Women Campaign of Oklahoma City, where Emily helped deliver CPR kits to schools. Additionally, she wrote a theme song for the organization in 2018 called, “Write Your Own Story.”

Emily is Miss Tulsa Outstanding Teen and will compete for the title of Miss Okla-homa Outstanding Teen in June. She is taking concurrent courses, was chosen to attend the University of Oklahoma’s High School Leadership Conference, is a member of the National Honor Society, and is ranked fi rst in her class. She will graduate with a 4.0 grade point average and plans to attend the University of Oklahoma in the fall.

Madison Rhea Walters, Muldrow High School, volunteers with several lo-cal community organizations and projects, including Future Farmers of America, Veterans Day programs, programs through Beta Club and the

First Baptist Church, and the Cherokee Nation Tribal Youth Council.

The project that Madison is most proud of is Tools for Schools, a project she start-ed with the help of her father. Two schools in northeast Oklahoma, Moff ett and Webbers Falls, suff ered extreme damage when the Arkansas River fl ooded in 2019. Madison and her father organized a fundraiser to raise money for the schools. Her father owns a woodworking store, so the idea was to sell tickets for $10 and raffl e off diff erent prize packages of tools. They were able to put together 13 prize packages to be given away ranging from $200 to $2,500. She went to area banks and local merchants to ask them to be area outlet locations where tickets could be purchased. Madison sold tickets at football game, helped with advertising, social media posts, fl yer distribution, ticket collection, and the fi nal drawing. When the fundraiser was over, they had raised over $21,000 to split between the two schools. Madison feels that the rural schools are the heartbeat of the community.

Madison has strong leadership skills. She owns and operates Madison’s Laser En-graving, a custom laser engraving business. She is FFA Chapter President, Oklaho-ma Electric Cooperatives Youth Tour Representative, Beta Club Treasurer, Spanish Club Representative, and a member of American Farmers and Ranchers. Additionally, Madison has served as an Oklahoma House of Representatives Page and Oklahoma Senate Page.

Madison is a Girl State Delegate, Cookson Hills Essay winner, 2020 FFA State winner, and State FFA Reporter. She was named Outstanding Student in many subjects, is a member of the Superintendent’s Honor Roll and Oklahoma Honor Society, and is ranked fi rst in her class. She will graduate with a 4.43 grade point average and plans to attend Northeastern State University in the fall.
