2-port STM-1 electrical FP cableconnections

The information in this section applies to both the 2-port STM-1 electricalATM IP FP (PEC NTNQ90AA) and the 2-port STM-1 electrical channelizedCES/ATM/IMA FP (PEC NTNQ91). The control cable of the FP providespower and the switchover capability when connected to the 2-port STM-1electrical 1:1 sparing panel (NTPS92AA). When far-end equipment otherthan the sparing panel is used, the control port cable is not used.

Figure 2 "Connections between a 2-port STM-1e ATM IP FP and a 2-portSTM-1e 1:1 sparing panel (NTPS92AA)" (page 14) shows where toconnect the SMB BT43 (SMZ) cable connectors.

CAUTIONRisk of equipment damageTo avoid damaging the center pin of the connector in thefaceplate of the NTNQ90AA card (2pSTM1eAtm FP) orNTNQ91AA card (2pSTM1eCh FP), attention should be paidwhile establishing a connection. The female (cable side)connector must be oriented and inserted carefully to prevent riskof damage to the center pin of the (faceplate mounted) maleplug.

2-port STM-1 optical FP cableconnections

The NTPS96 cross-connect cable links two NTNQ96 2-port STM-1 opticalchannelized CES/ATM/IMA (2pSTM1Ch) FPs to provide 1+1 line andequipment protection on an Multiservice Switch 7400/9400. Note thatthe Laps component has to be provisioned in order to achieve line andequipment protection.

In this application, the NTPS96 sends cross-over traffic between two2pSTM1Ch FPs on an Multiservice Switch 7400/9400 platform becausethe Multiservice Switch 7400/9400 backplane does not have the mateinterface needed to provide cross-connect signals between cards for lineand equipment protection (like that on the Multiservice Switch 15000backplane).

The NTPS96 can be used only between adjacent 2pSTM1Ch FPs.Once the NTPS96 has been plugged into its socket, line protection isachieved between ports with the same instance numbers of adjacent FPs(for example, port 0 of one 2pSTM1Ch FP protects port 0 of the other2pSTM1Ch FP).

See Figure 3 "Connections for the NTPS96 cross-connect cable" (page 16)for the NTPS96 connections.

DS1 or E1 MSA32 1-slot and 2-slot FPcable connections

CAUTIONService interruptionSparing requires all ports on the spare FP be connected tothe termination panel sparing connectors, whether they areprovisioned or not. Failure to do so will result in the terminationpanel dropping all ports on the spare FP.

The method of supplying power to an MSA32 sparing panel is described inthe section about power for a sparing panel in Nortel Multiservice Switch7400/9400 Fundamentals—Hardware (NN10600-170).

The 1-slot and 2-slot versions of the MSA FPs are supported by thesame termination and sparing panels with no difference in functionality. The PCR software compatibilities between FP versions are identified inNortel Multiservice Switch 7400/9400/15000/20000 Fundamentals—FPReference (NN10600-551). The FP 1-slot and 2-slot sparing configurationcombinations and the available sparing panels are identified in thedescription of the DS1 and E1 FPs in Nortel Multiservice Switch 7400/9400Fundamentals—Hardware (NN10600-170).

The cabling between a 1-slot FP and a termination or sparing panelis slightly different than the 2-slot FP. The higher pin density of theconnectors on the 1-slot FPs requires a pair of adapter Y-cable NTPS39sor pairs of prefabricated Y-cables NTPS32, NTPS33, NTPS36, or NTPS37to accommodate connecting to the lower pin density of existing FPs andsparing panels. The NTPS39 enables a cable-to-cable connection toexisting termination or sparing panel cables with PEC NTPS03 or NTPS04.The descriptions of all FP cable assemblies are in Nortel MultiserviceSwitch 7400/9400 Fundamentals—Hardware (NN10600-170), whiletheir installation procedures are in Nortel Multiservice Switch 7400/9400Installation, Maintenance, and Upgrade—Hardware (NN10600-175).

Since the user port numbering is different at the faceplates of the 1-slotand 2-slot versions of the FPs, the cable connections are divided into:

DS1 or E1 MSA8 FP cable connectionsThe available sparing panels for the DS1 or E1 MSA8 FPs are identifiedin the description of the DS1 and E1 FPs in Nortel Multiservice Switch7400/9400 Fundamentals—Hardware (NN10600-170).

For cabling between an MSA8 FP and a termination panel, you use MSA8single connector cables NTPS30, NTPS31, NTPS34, or NTPS35. Thesecables have only one connector on each end. One cable goes from MSA8P0 to fanout panel P0 for the eight ports and one cable goes from MSA8P1 to fanout panel P3 for power and signaling. Fanout panel P1 and P2are not used.

The descriptions of all FP cable assemblies are found in NortelMultiservice Switch 7400/9400 Fundamentals—Hardware (NN10600-170).The installation procedures are found in Nortel Multiservice Switch7400/9400 Installation, Maintenance, and Upgrade—Hardware(NN10600-175).

The method of supplying power to an MSA8 sparing panel is described inthe section about power for a sparing panel in Nortel Multiservice Switch7400/9400 Fundamentals—Hardware (NN10600-170).

See the following sections for more information on DS1 or E1 MSA8 FPcable connections:

E3 FP cable connectionsCAUTIONService interruptionSparing requires all ports on the spare FP be connected tothe termination panel sparing connectors, whether they areprovisioned or not. Failure to do so will result in the terminationpanel dropping all ports on the spare FP.

United Kingdom customers must connect the Tx output of the E3 functionprocessor to "TFC in" at the network termination point, and the Rx input to"TFC out" at the network termination point.

To meet EMC requirements, ensure that any cables you connect from theReceive port of the E3 FP or termination panel to the customer equipmentare of type NT734 and include two ferrite beads. For more information, see "Ferrite beads on E3 receive cable" (page 129).

Ferrite beads on E3 receive cable 129

Ferrite beads on E3 receive cableWhen you use the E3 card with the insulated receive shield, you mustinstall two ferrite beads on the coaxial cable that runs from the receiveport of the interface line equipment to the device. Depending on the siteconfiguration, the device connection is either the receive port of an E3 FPor the receive port of a termination panel.

Place the two ferrite beads and the tie wrap on the receive coax cable atthe end of the cable closest to the E3 FP.

Ethernet 100BaseT FP cableconnections

Customer equipment connects directly to the ports on the faceplate of anEthernet 100BaseT FP, as shown in figures

• Figure 85 "Customer equipment connections for a 2-port Ethernet100BaseT FP (NTNQ37)" (page 134)

• Figure 86 "Customer equipment connections for a 4-port Ethernet10/100BaseT FP (NTNQ95)" (page 135)

• Figure 87 "Customer equipment connections for an 8-port Ethernet10/100BaseT FP (NTNQ92)" (page 136)

Although the NTNQ92 and NTNQ95 are compatible with 10BaseTsignaling, the 100BaseT method of connection is recommended.

CAUTIONRisk of electromagnetic interferenceTo comply with electromagnetic interference (EMI) for Class B,use shielded cables for NTNQ92 and NTNQ95 and route allcables connected to 100BaseT Ethernet ports through the cablemanagement guides on the device.
