Editor'sNoteFROM the very first issue in september 1975 to the latest one in January 2017; the mode, presentation and style, Bul-letin OPa were pretty much the same. While it never failed in bringing pertinent and relevant news, updates and in-formation to the OPa members, we felt that the style and presentation need to be elevated to the next level.

Today, I am excited to introduce a newly fresh-look of the Bulletin OPa (BOPa).

yes, we are back with a “bumper-issue” of BOPa Quar-terly magazine. yes, it is a magazine-like bulletin with a fresh and rejuvenated new look and style that, I believe, is in keeping with today’s trends.

In this “Bumper Issue”, the cover story features an interview with First ad-miral Chan Peng Cheong, the assistant Chief of staff J7 in Joint Force Head-quarters, Ministry of Defence. an OP since 1981, OP Chan is also a proud father to three sons, all of whom are also Old Puteras.

Other interviews in this issue include with the 30th Commandant of rMC, Brigadier General Mohd shahada Ismail, on tips for success and some guid-ance for the boy’s wing in facing the reality of the world, and with OP Habibur rahman Ibrahim who talks about the Dna of royal Military College.

In this issue, we also get to know more of OP liew Choon lian, the group chairman and chief executive officer of MDT Innovations sdn Bhd and OP Mohd noor Hilman for his success in bringing his own fashion design brand – Hilman authentic.

Old Puteras also contributed their articles in this issue. They include our former OPa President OP salleh Mohd nor (who writes on environment) and OP Dr. Hisyam salleh (who shares his expertise in health issues).

like in previous issues, we also highlight various OPa activities and events in the past year or so. We also share the highlight of the newly relaunched OPa website and interactive portal.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the president of OPa, OP Baha and the rest of my colleagues in the EXCO line-up as well as other OPs for their effort, advices, commitment and dedication in making this new BOPa Magazine a real success. My thanks also to the team in amanie Media and the Malaysian Business for their professional support. Thank you everyone and HaPPy rEaDInG!

Time flies really quickly. iT feels like only recently that the OPa 2017/18 term began and before you know it another annual General meeting will soon take place.

it has indeed been a very busy and challenging past one year not just for OPa but also for the country as a whole.

The tough economic condition, the run-up to the 14th General election, the new Government and much earlier fasting month have somehow affected many of our planned activities and programmes. Having said that, OPa and its excos still managed to find time to organise a few despite their busy schedules. kudos to all involved.

OPa would also like to acknowledge all events organised through OPa chapters nationwide, as well as various intakes in rmc programmes held in collaboration with OPa.

i must impress upon all that these events, be it charity drive, sports or recreation, as well as talks and forums were well organised and have been well received by many. This i believe has further encouraged closer brotherhood bonding among OPs that live up to OPa’s motto - serve to lead. OPa wishes to take this opportunity to thank all OPs for supporting the events held.

i would like to take this opportunity to also express my sincere thank you to all my active OPa exco members with the support of our general manager OP salih. Thank you too to the dedicated OPa staff who continue to serve OPa very well. Without their support and services, there will be no effective OPa.

On another note, i am sure that you are all aware that this BOPa is somewhat different from the previous issues. yes, this is what we call the Bumper issue of BOPa.

i am mindful that the publication of BOPa is something that many OPs are looking forward to. With BOPa, we are able to reach out to OPs all over and update them on our activities and plans.

However, publishing printed material like BOPa has become somewhat an expensive endeavour, no thanks to the emergence of numerous social media platforms. Today, many Generation y and z are preferring the online communication medium over the printed ones.

in many ways, printing hardcopy publications are no longer economical especially if they are printed in small quantities. But it is my fervent belief that printed material, like BOPa, still has a place in this world.

On that note, OPa is fortunate to have OP razi Pahlavi, the executive Director of malaysian Business magazine (malaysia’s oldest business magazine), who has come forward to contribute his professional expertise and ideas with regards to BOPa.

With his experience and know-how in the publishing industry, OP razi Pahlavi has enabled OPa to come up with this Bumper issue at a minimal cost through his organisation, amanie media sdn Bhd.

i am looking forward for further collaboration with OP razi Pahlavi and amanie media in publishing future BOPa.

finally, as we move forward in malaysia Baru, i hope and wish for us all to continue treating each other with love and respect. Together, we can make malaysia a great nation.

Thank you.

The 30thCommandant of RMC BRig Jen Mohd Shahada iSMail

On 10th of July last year, Royal Military College (RMC) ap-pointed their 30th comman-

dant to empower their students to become Malaysia’s future leaders. The commandant, named Brig Jen Mohd Shahada Ismail creates history as he was the first RMC’s commandant from the air force.

Shahada shared that he was hon-oured to be picked as the comman-dant and to be the first commandant with one star rank. Previously, Sha-hada was a base commander based in Kuala Lumpur for ten months and shortly after he returned from Hajj, he found out that he has been promoted to be a commandant for RMC.

When he first came on board, he saw numerous problems that need-ed immediate reform, mainly on the physical aspects of the school.

“The first thing I did when I became RMC’s commandant was to upgrade the students’ living condition at their dorms.

“I replaced their beds, curtain, mattress, pillows and even at some rooms I have changed their doors. The change are due to some students breaking the doors, so I have replaced the doors with a stronger material.

“Besides that, with a tight budget in hands, I also managed to repaint some rooms that really needed the work,” said Shahada while noting that he enjoyed the challenge overall.

Besides reforming the school, he also stressed that the school focus should be centered around the stu-dents mostly known as Putera.

“My approach as a commandant is to upgrade the living condition of each Putera and to be closer to them. On my first day, I told my employees that I won’t be needing an official office and their work should be cen-tered around the students instead of me.

“I have always stressed to my em-ployees to always prioritise Putera and to remember that their subject of work centers around Putera and not me, even if I’m their leader.”

Ever since becoming a comman-dant, Shahada had introduce “R2MC” concept which will help RMC to achieve its goals.

He explained that “R2” stands for respect and responsibility. Shahada believed that these two characteris-tics are vital in producing noble, con-cern and credible leaders.

“M stands for meritocracy. To me, excellence is the in transforming RMC into a premier and respected pres-tigious institution. Excellence shall be obtained from all aspects mainly in moral, academic and even sports.

“Lastly, C stands for camaraderie. ‘Esprit de Corps’ or camaraderie is the main core of the military institution in assisting RMC upon achieving the fu-ture of excellency.”

Since he took over the job, Shahada also has changed RMC’s tagline to "Empowering Future Leaders" as he regards that RMC’s main mission is to prime the boys to become the leaders of tomorrow.

One of his personal focus is to im-prove Puteras’ attitude. Very early

on, he had instructed the cleaner for dorms and asked the students to clean the dorms on their own.

He said, training them to clean and throw rubbish properly inside the bin is necessary as it will shape them to be more discipline.

In addition to that, in line with his R2MC approach, he also found a way to ensure that Putera can shoulder on responsibilities and had introduced a system where each dorms are re-quired to list down the names of each students living in the room.

“We also assigned person in charge or in short ‘IC’ for each rooms. That way, if any items were broken, we will directly ask the IC who did it. Once we find out who are the perpetrators, we will charge the students to pay back using a debit system. In a case where the IC refused to name who is the per-petrator, we will charge student in the room.

“This will teach them how to be responsible and how to take care of public items as if its their own” ex-plained Shahada strictly.

as a commandant to RMC, he also had to bear the responsibility of nur-turing Putera to be someone who is noble, respectful, responsible towards oneself, college, religion, race and the nation in line with the spirit of cama-raderie.

Putera is also expected to excel in everything they do and that shall transform RMC into a prestigious learning institution respected by the local as well as global.

However, Shaha-da had expressed that he isn't go-ing to focus on achieving academic ex-cellence but rather would like to stress nur tu r ing Putera to become an ef-fect ive leader.

“When it comes to academic, we have always known that RMC are not extremely brilliant. But we have moved up slowly over the years when compared to other fully residential school (SBP) in Malaysia.

“and for now we have introduced quite a number of programs to im-prove our academic achievements. For example, we have created a bud-dy system where smarter student in each subjects will be paired with stu-dents who need extra help. These two students will then study together and look out for each other.

“Besides that, we have made our night classes which goes on from 830 pm to 1030 pm compulsory to all students. We have also allocated ex-tra classes on Sundays for those who need extra help.”

Even when the commandant him-self admitted that RMC has never

been a forefront when it comes to ac-ademic excellence, Putera has proven the world wrong once again and has continued to achieve amazing mile-stones in academic. Just recently two students named Harris Shahrul Hish-am and Warinthorn Charenrat Winai won the best science research poster presentation in the international Con-ference Of Young Scientists (ICYS) held in Belgrade, Syria.

When it comes to military, Shahada believed that RMC is not a prepara-tory military school but instead this school mission is to give birth to fu-ture leaders in military, public and pri-vate sectors.

“To put it simpler, what we are do-ing here is just merely introducing military way of life, culture and disci-pline.

“We did have military trainings here, so Putera boys are able to dabble in military activities such as marching and shooting,” he explained.

Moving forward, Shahada shared RMC future plans where they are final-ising the completion of takraw court, field and he added that their hall is ex-pected to be completed by 2019.

“However, I am currently pushing for the construction of aSTaKa and canteen so that I can fully fulfil the mandate to excel in both academics and sports.”

Regardless, it is apparent that RMC is in good hands and the future is

bright with their newly appointed commandant piloting

the school to their next destination

of success.

was to train potential Officer Cadets before they were sent to the Officer Cadet Schools in Mons or Eaton Hall, United Kingdom. The Boys’ Company was to provide secondary education to selected boys from all over the country and would be the feeder in-stitution for the Pre-OCTU.

It was not until 1953 when the then British High Commissioner for Malaya, General Sir Gerald Templer as he was then, conceived a long term objective for these two establishments that the Federation Military College was for-mally formed on 19th December 1953. Even now, the College is the only insti-tution of its kind in Malaysia. His noble intentions were duly noted because at the time, he felt that not much em-phasis was being put on grooming

I T all started in 1962 for Habibur Rahman Ibrahim. The former Presi-dent of the Old Putera Association

enrolled in Malaya’s then most pres-tigious institution, the Royal Military College at the tender age of sixteen. Known as the Federation Military Col-lege back then, it was dubbed the Sandhurst of Malaysia. So much so that it would soon become the ulti-mate training ground for leaders in various fields including the govern-ment sector, the private sector and most importantly, the military itself.

“At that time, once you were se-lected, you are the cream of the crop. In my case, I was from a ‘kampung’ school in Malacca. I was one of four students that were handpicked to continue their secondary education at Royal Military College. Only the best of the best could make the cut. That state of competitiveness is the essence of the College,” says Habibur.

On the 3rd of July 1952, an an-nouncement was made by the Secre-tary of Defence that the Malay Regi-ment Training Depot in Port Dickson was to be upgraded as the Malay Regiment Training Centre with the additional establishment of a Pre-Of-ficer Cadet Training Unit (Pre-OCTU) and a Boys’ Company. The Pre-OCTU

young Malaysians to become future leaders in their respective fields.

“The results spoke for itself. If you look back, FMC/RMC graduates took the top positions in the government, military and even the private sector. General Templer’s objectives were reached.”

However, as changes were made to the organization, the curriculum and most importantly the supply of dedicated and qualified teachers; the College was no longer producing the calibre of students that it once did. Habibur shares how back in the day, distinguished teachers who were Cambridge-educated were brought specifically to teach at the students of the College.

“Half of the senior staff were actual-ly British and the civilian staff were still handpicked among the best teachers. As the government developed more and more residential schools, the sup-ply of quality teachers started getting diluted. This cannot be avoided, be-cause when a country develops too fast, it is at the expense of quality. That philosophy was not followed through. As a result, we see a decline in quality.”

Although it is not all grey skies as the College still remains to this day, the only fully residential, multi-ra-

cial government-funded secondary school cum college. “If we are talking about a better Malaysia, a united Ma-laysia; Royal Military College has been exercising this concept since its in-ception. That in itself, is a very unique aspect of the College.”

The College succeeded in its origi-nal intention however, due to it being a highly regulated institution. Habibur dug deep into the past, and paints a picture of just how tough life was in the College. One does not own the 24 hours they have in a day. They cannot decide what to do in between sleeping hours. Even when they sleep, they must be on a particular bed, in a particular corner in a designated room. They must be on that bed from lights out (10pm to 6am) and must not leave their bed other than to go to the toilet. “A pam-pered child from an upper-middle class home may not find the training at RMC suitable. But in actual fact, the more pampered you are, the more you need this kind of discipline,” he jokes.

The mood shifts when Habibur ex-pressed his disappointment in the lack

In BrIef: OLD PUTERA ASSOCIATION

T HE Old Putera Association was founded by a group of 15-20 Old Puteras who got together

and decided that they should form an association out of a dire need to es-tablish an alumni which would main-tain the ties and friendship among former “Budak Boys” of the then “Boys’ Wing” of the Federation Mili-tary College. On the 12th of January 1971, the Old Putera Association was officially registered with the Registrar of Societies.

Back then, there were hardly any inexpensive places to have fun for young adults in Kuala lumpur with-out bordering on the obscene. As there were no malls nor public facili-ties at the time, the founding mem-bers wanted to have a space for like-minded gentlemen to gather. The other existing social clubs were mostly focused on welfare such as the lions Club. It’s very first club-house was located in what is now known as Jalan Maharajalela.

As the Association grew, they bought a building in Brickfields. A modest 3-storey townhouse was then

the new clubhouse for the Associa-tion. The ground floor was rented out to a bank that provided the Associa-tion with a mortgage loan to pay for the building itself. Unfortunately, the recession came and the Old Puteras had no way of paying off the bank loan so the Brickfields townhouse was no more.

luck would soon be on their side, when OP Tan Sri Mohd Razali Abd. Rahman donated a piece of land in the Saujana Resort complex to build OPA’s new office. The Association held a fundraising campaign to real-ize their dream of having their own place. In the end, RM5 million was raised and invested into the building.

The 3-storey building includes the penthouse where the OPA facilities and offices are located as well as a second floor and a ground floor which were then rented out. The in-come gained helps to fund the estab-lishment. Thanks to the goodwill and generosity of those who realised the OPA Building, the Association finally has a permanent place to operate from.

of promising graduates the College now produces. This is because a student of the College is given a free education, free facilities, clothes, and various other privi-leges students from other institu-tions are not provided with. “So what is the added value of an RMC graduate? If they do not give back to the country, he is only as good as a ‘less-expensive’ student from a government secondary school.”

Plans to move the campus to a 40-acre piece of land in Sungai Besi were shot down by Habibur

in particular as they were talking about hundreds and millions of ring-git. “I told the board that we shouldn’t waste the money on all this, we should spend the money on quality teachers. Import the teachers from overseas like we used to do before. The chal-lenges of the country has shifted so much that a graduate of RMC back then and a graduate of RMC now needs to be of a different calibre. The one in the present has to have a stronger mind, better equipped, bet-ter educated, and better prepared to face his world.”

O n the night of saturday, 5th of august came with it the 47th annual Dinner for The

Old Putera association (OPa), the alumni association for the prestigious royal Military College (rMC), which was held at the One World Hotel in Bandar Utama.

Keeping on with their traditions, the OPa annual dinner is held to not only celebrate but to also foster their ca-maraderie amongst one another.

The number of OPa in attendance was an overwhelming number of al-most 1,000 OP who spent the night mingling around and reminiscing about their boyhood days.

The night started with the arrival of the Guest of Honour, Tuan yang Teru-tama of sarawak, Tun Pehin seri Haji abdul Taib Mahmud, followed by a speech from OPa President Tan sri Dr salleh Mohd nor.

as the feast comes to an end, then came the moment all the guests had been waiting for – the announcement for the “OP of the year” award.

The much coveted “OP of the year” award was awarded to Tan seri Dr. azmil Khalid, who is the president and chief executive officer of alloyMtd Group.

Unlike other years, during his ac-ceptance speech, OP azmil, in an un-precedented manner, invited his batch mates to come on stage to share the momentous moment with him.

OP azmil emphasised, in true spirit of brotherhood, that the award is not for him alone, as it is also for his batch mates whom he has shared his ups and downs experiences together and whom also helped shaped him to be-come the man that he is today.

as with every OPa annual din-ner which celebrates its batches, this year’s event celebrated the G77 (batch 1977), in which the celebrated batch were featured in a special per-formance which they presented titled "Through the years musical" – which saw the OPa singing and dancing, ac-

ed by the OPa for those in pursuit of their academic interests.

annually, the OPa rewards new graduates from rMC as well as chil-dren of the alumni with the funds raised from the fundraiser.

Tun Pehin was later called on stage as he presented a generous contribu-tion of rM 100,000 which he awarded to the OPa Education Trust Fund.

Though the night ended on a high note, it was a bittersweet parting for some of the OPa as they parted ways with their brothers, neverthe-less, there is always next year to look forward to.

The night also stood witness to a fundraiser for the progression of the Education Trust Fund, which is found-

The first special exco meeting was held at the saujana Golf & Country Club on the 12th september 2017 at 1.00 pm. Most of the members listed above attended the first meeting.

The briefing event was continued with OP Omar Mat noor giving the chrono-logical events of the OPa, OPa Building and B&e Fund starting from the year OPa was formed in 1971, the setting up of the B&e Fund in 1976, the transfer of the land to OPa in 1997 and the completion of the OPa Building in 2000.

Briefing on the accounts of OPA, OPA Building and B&E Fund

Issues raised during the OPA 2016/2017 AGM on 24th January 2018 were:1. reasons for the formation of the consolidated

accounts of OPa and B&e Fund 2. Whether the presentation on the consolidated

accounts and the review report met the requirements of the OPa Constitution

The objectives of this Committee are to: To establish the current position relating to the OPa,

OPa Building and B&e fund in accordance with the relevant supporting documents and guidelines;

To identify the gaps or improvements needed. To prioritise the action that needs to be taken by the

executive Committee to address the gaps identified To become a point of reference for the OPa

members and the future Committee on the matters relating to the OPa, OPa Building and the B&e Fund.

Consensus: Members attended the aGM agreed for the OPa to set up a special committee to look into this matter and pre-sent the findings to the members.

OPA President, OP Baha introduced the Special Committee. They were given the task to look from all angles which includes the legal, tax and accounting perspectives.

a file with the documents compiling the land title, cor-respondences with Inland revenue Boards (IrB) and lawyers and applicable rul-ings/guidelines from IrB was provided to the attend-ees for their reference (note: this file can be located at the archive room in OPa office).

OP ahmad hammami Muhyidin concluded the briefing by present-ing the summary of the findings from the legal, tax and accounting perspectives and solutions for going forward.

amongst the solutions proposed by the special Committee is legally, OPa and B&e Fund is one entity. Only one account to be submitted to lhDn and rOs.

another solution is that B&e Fund is not a legal entity as there is no evi-dence to suggest that the Fund was registered with any authorities.

also, the land and OPa building are owned by OPa. hence, it has to be re-corded in OPa accounts.

next, the rental income and expens-es incurred in managing the building should be recorded under the OPa accounts.

additionally, in future aGM, there will be three(3) accounts to be pre-sented for the benefits of the mem-bers and they are the: Financial state-ments of OPa which will be audited by internal honorary auditors, the Financial statements of B&e Fund which will be audited by external auditors and also the Consolidated financial statements. Only the Con-solidated financial statements will be submitted to rOs and lhDn.

T he FMC Port Dickson Budak Boys held a lunch reception for Mr. Mui sam loong, a for-

mer teacher in FMC Port Dickson and FMC sungai Besi, on sunday, 18 March 2018 at the eagles’ nest, Kelab Golf negara subang (KGns). The lunch was held in conjunction of him turn-ing 80 on 16 Feb 2018 and his second marriage on 24 Feb 2018. he is one of the few Malaysian teachers who were in FMC Port Dickson then and still with us.

Mui sam loong was a teacher in King edward VII school, Taiping in 1956. after attending the teachers’ training at the Teachers’ Training Col-lege in Pulau Pinang, he joined FMC Port Dickson as a science Teacher and was in FMC Port Dickson and FMC sungai Besi from Jan 1959 to Dec 1961. In Dec 1961 he was com-missioned as a sub-lieut in the rMn (special Duty list) and was posted to KD Malaya, singapore as an Instructor Officer, specializing on weapons elec-tronics, electrical and radio engineer-ing. In nov 1971 he left the rMn in the rank of lt Kdr and joined singapore electronics as a Marketing Manager. In 1977, he joined Motorola Military & aerospace Inc. as its Managing Di-

rector (asia Pacific). he was with the company for nearly 22 years, mainly dealing in various projects in China. In 2001, he left Motorola and joined the Kl Kepong Group. he was the found-er and Director of ekomoditi sdn Bhd, a company in the Kl Kepong Group. his company was involved with the development of the software for the computerized Passport, Identity Card and Driving licence in Malaysia. he retired from the group in 2015.

he was married to lee Bee lee in 1963 and blessed with three children (two sons and one daughter, all in Pet-aling Jaya) and three grand-children (two boys and one girl). lee passed away in sept 2013 in University hospi-tal, Petaling Jaya due to ill health.

Present at the lunch reception were 67 Budak Boys who were in FMC Port Dickson and FMC sungai Besi when he was there, and 18 wives. special men-tion must be made on the presence of OP ling liong sik (B Coy; 1958-1961) in spite of his ailing condition. nazmi abd razak, the cur-rent rMC Director of stud-ies and his wife were also

present on invitation. The rMC Com-mandant and the OPa President were invited but unfortunately both had to be outstation on that day.

By 1130 hours, the Budak Boys and their wives started to arrive at the club. It was quite a pathetic sight to see them walking from the car park to the club building, unlike the sight of them marching to the dining hall during the good old days in FMC Port Dickson. On meeting each other at the reception table, there were sincer-ities demonstrated in their shaking of hands and hugging each other. some had problem recognising one another, having not met each other since leav-ing FMC Port Dickson or FMC sungai Besi. those present did help.It was not until 1300 hours that OP

nawawi Mat Desa (F Coy; 1959-1961), the Organizing secretary, with much difficulty had them settled down to their seats to start the lunch. It was indeed a sumptuous lunch - ala sev-en-dish Chinese menu, with desert, Chinese tea and tea or nescafe tarik. everyone seemed to enjoy the lunch.

OP liew yow Kiong (B Coy; 1959-1963) conducted the “bersanding” ceremony with representatives from the various intakes given the honour to “merenjis” the couple. In his in-troduction address OP liew recalled

some of the episodes (censored) when Mui was in FMC Port Dickson. This was followed by the cake cutting ceremony - Mui on his 80th birthday and with Cindy, on their recent wed-ding. To mark the occasion, a pew-ter plate was presented to Mui by OP radzi on behalf of those present and a bouquet of flowers to Cindy by Puan sri Mahani, wife of OP radzi.

In his address, OP radzi sheikh ahmad (F Coy; 1957-1960), the Chair-man of the FMC Port Dickson Budak Boys, thanked Mr. and Mrs. Mui sam loong for accepting the invitation to

be at the lunch reception in their honour. OP radzi also thanked OP ling and the other Budak Boys and their wives, for their ever support and presence.

In his thank you address, Mui expressed his gratitude and surprise with the ar-rangement for the lunch reception in his honour. he thanked OP radzi and the Organising Committee for

laying out such an elaborate and mem-orable programme and mobilising the attendance of so many of the Budak Boys who were with him in FMC Port Dickson and FMC sungai Besi.

The lunch reception ended at 3.00pm as planned, but it was not until 4.00pm that the last few Budak Boys and their wives left the club. with such encouraging turn-out and support, the organising committee look forward to organise another get-together after the hari raya aidilfitri this year.

The activities’ aim were to help fur-ther promote and maintain the strong brotherhood spirit of ‘OP-ism’ and ca-maraderie amongst the OPs.

all the key management and play-ers of the OPa sports sections, name-ly, Cricket, Golf, rugby, Football, Bas-ketball, Hockey, and Ironman teams were invited to the party.

the presence of OP luminaries and sports personalities, notably; OP radzi shiekh ahmad (former federal minister), OP shahrudin ali (Olympian sprinter) and OP Jagjit singh (Olym-pian hockey player).

The 3 celebrities OP gave very en-tertaining impromptu motivational and inspiring speeches and shared their experiences - including sto-ries from their boyhood days with the young OPs, and their hopes and dreams for the future.

all in all, the event was a great suc-cess as everyone had a very good time and some even stayed late till past midnight to display their singing skills during the karaoke session.

The Old Putera Association or as it is affectionately called by some 3000 registered mem-

bers, the “OPA”; started as a small idea but soon grew to become Malaysia’s most active alumni associations to date. “There are more than 15,000 of us out there. We’re trying to reach out to all the members, registered or not,” says the honorary Secretary 1 of the Association, OP Chua Cheng Kean.

he is one of fifteen dedicated ex-ecutive Committee (eXCO) members that donate their time and effort into running the Association. The Commit-tee consists of the President, the Vice President, the two honorary Secretar-ies (one from the Armed Forces and one from the civilian sector), the hon-

lege and the executive Committee.“I never saw myself joining the ex-

ecutive Committee, most of all as the hon. Secretary 1. It was not because I had not had the time or energy to spare, but because I was humbled by the make-up of the committee back then,” Chua shares, referring to the previous committee members being those of high ranks and standing.

At least once a month, the execu-tive Committee meet each other to discuss matters pertaining to the ac-tivities, finance, and membership of the Association as well as any matters that affect their alma mater.

There are many factors that helped propel OPA to where it is today. One

important factor is its members – both the executive Committee and regular members – who show such dedication to serve the Association and assist each other regardless of race, religion, culture or boundary.

The day-to-day administration of the Association is carried out by a full-time paid Secretariat with a General Manager as well as two staff located at the Association’s office. There are also two internal auditors to audit the annual accounts of the Old Putera As-sociation.

Chua tells us the activities run by the Association is mostly geared towards sports as it is a big thing amongst the Old Puteras. “We have a person

orary Treasurer as well as ten other ‘Committee Members’.

When individually elected during the Annual General Meeting, these very members serve for two years each. elections for posts such as the President, honorary Secretary 1, and five eXCO members fall on odd years of the calendar; whereas the Vice President, honorary Secretary 2, hon-orary Treasurer and the remaining 5 eXCO members are then elected on even years of the calendar. They can hold the same office for a maximum of 3 consecutive terms if they so wish. The royal Military College also ap-points a liaison Officer whose duty is to bridge the gap between the Col-

in charge of these sports events, usu-ally an eXCO member, who will be li-aising with the Old Boys outside and then compile a concluded report for us to review. Most of the activities are self-initiated and ended up very suc-cessful.”

Annual events such as dinners, or general events such as gatherings, social or religious activities are not the only things the OPA is famous for. The Association also takes welfare very seriously, “not all of our alumni is successful or wealthy. OPs come to us when they need help whether it be in the form of start-up funds, financial assistance or medical assistance. And our job is to alleviate their burdens to the best of our capabilities & abilities,” he adds.

An initiative highlighted by Chua is the national Disaster relief Commit-tee. An idea that was given a cross-ing thought around 2 to 3 years ago came about when there was a disas-trous flood in Kelantan. Truly, the spir-it of brotherhood could be seen then. “When we sounded the alarm, we were genuinely surprised to see OPs we do not see often come to our aid.”

OPs came from all over the coun-try to help. They were lining up at the ground floor of the OPA Building to load up the lorries full of food, cloth-ing, and several other things the flood victims might need.

To show the sheer contribution of the Association, Chua shares with us that the OPA performed in such a well-organized manner that they were invited by the government to attend future meetings organized & co-ordi-nated by the national Disaster Man-agement Agency (naDMA). “We were being recognized and acknowledged as a body that can effectively con-tribute. Because of this, the President of the Association back then decided to have a formal OPA Disaster relief committee.”

But just like any alumni association, the main objective is to be the catalyst for networking (business networking, social networking and even career networking). young OPs or fresh rMC graduates who are looking for advice

on their studies, careers or what jobs to pursue will be guided by the expe-rienced OPs. “Which path one takes after their pre-university studies will determine where they end up in 5 to 10 years from now. So guiding them during such a time is of utmost impor-tance.”

The concept of ‘1 Malaysia’ has long been practised by rMC and OPA. Probably the only alumni associa-tion of a full-boarding school to cel-ebrate the multi-racial aspect of Ma-laysia, the OPA is proud of the fact that members of various races come together and are actively involved in the Association.

“rMC is the only boarding school or college where students or shall we say, ‘Puteras’, of different races and ethnicities study together, play to-gether, eat together, sleep in the same room together… not on the same bed, though,” Chua quips.

With the recent Ge14 where the old government whose reign lasted 61 years was overthrown almost single-handedly by the debut of the millen-nial voters, the OPA has always known that nurturing the future generation to be well-read and educated is im-portant, especially during their teen-age years. “As we speak, there’s an initiative taken by a group of senior OPs, they have started a fund called the Michael loh Fund to help improve the english proficiency of rMC stu-dents which is declining at the mo-ment. Just because we are not com-pelled to pass the english language subject in school, does not mean we must let it deteriorate in terms of us-age among the students.”

In order to encourage and motivate academic performances, an annual event called ‘Anugerah Cemerlang’ was initiated about 5 years ago. The event rewards students who achieve a certain number of As in the SPM, PT3 as well as UPSr examinations. The students will each be awarded with a certificate of achievement, cash token of a few hundred ringgit and a goodie bag.

Due to financial constraints, the OPA Building has four floors instead

of the intended five. As they do not need to use all of the floors, the other three floors are rented out for income which in turn helps to run the society.

“The penthouse is actually com-prised of the office, the lounge, the conference room, the archive room, and the president’s room. We even have a karaoke set,” Chua jokes. The lounge is for talks, forums, discus-sions, and other events as they see fit including tahlils and OPs intake social gatherings. renting out the spaces is also another form of income that helps the Association operates smoothly.

“We want to see it become a regu-lar Friday night hangout place if I may say so. Currently, it’s not used as of-ten enough. In a month, we have four weekends. The OPA organizes fes-tive activities and year end parties. Outside of that, we do have people who want to organize their own batch gathering.”

The OPA envisions the future to be one where more OPs join the OPA. The plan is to essentially be of service to OPs, their families, and not forget-ting the College itself. By engaging assistance and support from regional OP chapters and social media, mat-ters such as fund-raising goals could easily be achieved to provide better benefits to members of the OPA and their families.

“Moreover, being an alumni asso-ciation of a multi-racial and multi-reli-gious make-up, and with some of our members holding senior and/or influ-ential positions in the civil services and private sectors, we hope and look forward to contributing effectively to-wards nation building, in one way or another, of the new Malaysia where we could sustain and further enhance inter-racial and inter-faith tolerance, understanding and acceptance in the interests of national harmony, pro-gress and unity.” Chua commented.

looking further ahead, they also see themselves fostering more inter-alumni relations. “In the end, all we really want is more involvement. not only from the executive Committee, but from all of the Old Puteras.”

M any OP’s come to me and bravely self-diagnose them-selves “Doc, I Have SInUS”

Or , “ Saya ada Resdung”Technically the “I have Sinus” is cor-

rect, as everybody has Sinuses. It is part of our body. But it doesn’t mean you are sick though.

The Para nasal sinuses (Para in latin means around) are air filled spaces around and connected to the nose. These air filled spaces are located in

Resdung oR A lleRgies?sinus, the walls of our skulls thus believed to lighten the weight of our skull.

We have four sets of them, the fron-tal, on your forehead, the Ethmoids, in between your eyes, The maxillary, under your cheek bone and the Sphe-noid which is deep inside our skull be-hind the eyes.

Besides lightening the skull, the exact function of the sinuses are not exactly known. It can harbour disease that is for sure. Sinusitis to be exact.

Before we get to know about Sinus-itis, we have to understand a bit about nasal allergies or allergic Rhinitis.

Allergic rhinitisI’m sure everyone is familiar with asthma, where the subject is sensitive and exposure to dust, smoke, pollut-ants in the air and other factors cause the lung passages to “squeeze’ or close on itself . The person ends up wheezing, choking and breathless.

allergic Rhinitis is similar to that. The nose acts as a filter and they

are bombarded with pollutants every single breath that we take.

In some sensitive individuals, the nose overreacts (allergic) and se-cretes secretions and sneezing oc-curs. Some of the secretions pass for-ward as mucus or “hingus” or as the northern OP’s will say “ayaq lendiaq” and some trickle down the back of

nose can swell , a condition called tur-binate hypertrophy thus blocking the airway. The patient will then experi-ence nose block, snoring at night or worse suffer from Obstructive sleep apnea.(another story)

The sufferer may develop nasal pol-yps which are fleshy masses of abnor-mal tissue causing similar effects.

In some cases, the opening of the paranasal sinuses to the nasal cav-ity itself can be blocked and disrupts the normal equilibrium state of the air

filled space.Residual Fluid in the sinus gets ac-

cumulated and sometimes becomes infected which becomes the actual Sinusitis.

When all the above sequele occurs, then you need to see an EnT doctor like me.

Treatment consists of antibiotics for an acute infection, long term steroids and anti histamines and some cases surgery.

Surgery is done endoscopically us-ing an endoscope meaning there are no external cuts on the nose or face and is directed to the offending prob-lem. It is popularly known as Function-al Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS).

The surgery is commonly done and usually will be done in an hour or less under general anaesthesia.

Polyps are removed, swollen tur-binates are trimmed or removed to help you breath better and the natu-ral sinus openings are enlarged to fa-cilitate normal drainage of the sinuses and its normal ventilation allowing air to move in and making the sinuses healthy again.

filled space.Residual Fluid in the sinus gets ac-

cumulated and sometimes becomes infected which becomes the actual Sinusitis.

LIKE FATHER LIKE SONS –

By RyNNAAS AzLAN

IN this Bumper Issue, Bulletin OPA editorial team got up close and personal with First Admiral Chan Peng Cheong – Assistant Chief of Staff J7 in Joint Force Headquarters, Ministry of Defence. A former OP since 1981, OP Chan is also a proud father to three sons, all of whom are also Old Puteras.

Q | Firstly, can you introduce yourself, your background and what you are doing now?

OP Chan| I was born in a humble family in Alor Setar, Kedah. I received my primary and lower secondary education in my home town and

joined the prestigious Royal Military College in 1979 and stayed till 1981. After RMC, I joined the Royal Malaysian Navy Training College as a cadet officer in 1981 with the hope of “Join the navy and see the world”. I was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1 May 1983 and was award-ed the coveted Sword of Honour for being the best all round cadet.

Throughout my service career I have had experience in various appoint-ments both in Command & Staff functions. I have commanded four ships

in my service record. I joined the Navy with dreams of seeing places around the world and I have. My present appointment is

as the Assistant Chief of Staff (J7-Exercise) in the Joint Force Headquarters, Ministry of Defence.

Q | As a former BOY and current member of OPA, can you tell us a bit about your time as a student in RMC?OP Chan| As a Kedahan travelling to Kuala Lumpur for the first time, it was a mixture of excitement and nervousness. The excitement of a kampong boy’s first glimpse of the tall buildings and flyo-vers in 1979 is still vivid in my mind. At the same time, reporting to a military school to undergo regimental routine made me so nervous. The first time I stepped into Kem Sungai Besi was my very first time entering a military base.

I would say my family’s earn-ing was below average and RMC was an option to ease my family’s burden. It was a tough decision to be made, to put aside the civilian’s freedom in exchange of regimental routine which in the end will mold me into a future leader. Because I had no military training nor family members serving the armed forces, I did not know what to expect. No one shared their experience with me, I had no one to seek for advice, I knew nothing about regimen-tal life. But one thing for sure, I was well aware of the RMC’s reputation as the one and only military college in Malaysia. In my heart, RMC is always num-ber one and second to none.

It was quite a culture shock at the beginning. I learned march-ing, small arms firing, physical training and many more. We spoke in military jargon, we addressed our mate as “squad” instead of “friend”, we called the place we eat at “Putera’s Mess” instead of “Canteen”. We have to sit up straight as we ate while the spoon had to be held at a correct an-gle from table to mouth and we call it “eating square”. We don’t “walk” but we “march”. No one was greater than the other as we always need each oth-er to pass through the obstacles. The training was so well structured that a man with huge ego can be humbled within days. One of the simplest ex-ample was the 12 feet wall at the ob-stacles course. Once we donned the backpack and armed with weapon, webbings and boots, there was ad-ditional 15kg to the body weight. We needed our squad at the bottom for some support and a few guys on the top to pull us up in order to scale the 12 feet wall. Nobody could do it alone. Within a few months, I could see the physical change in me.

Needless to say, the early days was a hard process for everyone as every-one missed home. The esprit de corps was the key to our survival, my fellow squad is now my family. For example,

the shoes shining job can take a long time to finish and therefore, we would then sit together and shared stories about almost everything under the sun while the fingers, wrapped with cotton cloth, continuously polishing the shoes.

For me, there was no turning back. What am I going to do if I quit RMC? My parents were struggling to make end meets and family already put high hopes on me to finish my study. I aimed to do well and bulldozed all the challenges, to just endure all the train-ings and be a better version of myself. After three years in RMC, I became a man equipped with some necessary skill sets. Not only was I physically fitter and mentally stronger, I also learned the tricks to survive. I became a better person.

Q | As a member of the OPA what can you say has changed from your time and now regard-ing RMC?OP Chan| Based on my personal per-spective, I would say that after all these years we are still able to retain the core values of RMC and uphold our motto of “Serve to Lead”. Training methods

might have changed to better suit the modern challenges of training the younger generations. During my time, we did not have the facilities that the Budak Boys are having now. The food was only slightly better than Ration Tempur, and I heard now the Mess is managed by caterer. I think it is a good move, teenagers need nutritious food to grow stronger.

Q | As we know, all your sons (Lt. Chan Jun Shen, Dr. Chan Jun Win and Sub-Lt. Chan Jun Kwan) also attended RMC. Did they make their own decisions to at-tend your alma mater or did you have a say in it?OP Chan| All my sons were very keen to follow in my footsteps. I believe it was the right decision to send them for some military training to toughen them up. Some sacrifices need to be done for the greater good. After all, some pressure is needed to mold a boy into a man. Looking at the end “product” now, I believe the “factory” did a great job in the production line.

Q | Are you proud to see your sons following in your footsteps

pg36-38.indd 37 16/07/2018 12:36:34 ptg

Page 38: Passionate Pursuits Like Father Like Sons - opa.org.my · [D, 86-90] honorary treasurer OP Ungku Mohsin Ungku ahmad [D, 77-79] OP Mohd Muazan ... OPa was formed in 1971, the setting

in attending RMC?OP Chan| Definitely. I feel very proud of them following in my footsteps in attending RMC. It was very special to see that all my sons to have sur-vived the regimental life and to be able to graduate from RMC as an Old Putera. I have the RMC’s Comman-dant, instructors, teachers and staffs to thank..

Q | Can you share with us on what are your sons doing now?OP Chan| The eldest son OP Lieu-tenant Chan Jun Shen RMN is an Air Engineer in the Royal Malaysian Navy Air Wing Headquarters. My second son OP 2nd Lieutenant Chan Jun Win

is an Army doctor at Tuanku Mizan Armed Forc-es Hospital. The youngest son OP Sub Lieutenant Chan Jun Kwan RMN is a Marine Engineer in Royal Malaysian Navy’s Frigate Squadron.

Q | How were they like growing up? Did you expect for them to be who they are now?OP Chan| I consider myself a very strict and highly disciplined father and I believe that the Asian way of bringing up kids is the best policy. They did not spend much time at home because once they are teenag-ers, they reported to RMC. They spent half of their life growing up with the GIs (Gunnery Instructors) and PTIs

(Physical Training Instructors).

Q | During the 60th National Day celebration, two of your sons, Lt. Chan Jun Shen and Sub-Lt. Chan Jun Kwan were both with you when you recited the Rukun Negara, can you describe how you felt during that patriotic day flanked by your own sons?OP Chan| The National Day is a proud for the country. It was a special mo-ment to remember for me, not just because I shared the stage with my two sons, but more importantly to be given the opportunity to recite Rukun Negara together with all the other armed forces veterans.

Q | From your eldest son’s (Lt. Chan Jun Shen) blog post dedi-cated for your birthday, there were pictures inserted of you training them from childhood with military-like routines. Will you also be doing that to your grandchildren?OP Chan| Well, time has changed and different generations look at things differently. Flexibility and adaptations are crucial for better survivability in the future and the old school method might not be the best. I leave it to my kids to decide. We should not force a fish to climb a tree. If they are des-tined to excel in something else, I will fully support the idea.

Q | Going back to RMC. It is a well-known fact that not many Chinese students are attending RMC. Do you have any opinions why that is?OP Chan| Many of them are not aware of the opportunity offered by RMC, so that makes them stay on the safer side instead of venturing into a mys-terious military school inside an army camp. To change that, I believe all the Old Puteras play an important role as the ambassador of Royal Military Col-lege.

Q | Do you encourage for more Chinese students to attend RMC as you and your sons did?OP Chan| Definitely. RMC is a great place for racial integration and to mix around with people from all over Ma-laysia. No one is too special nor too low in RMC. Once we put on the uni-form, we do the same training, eat the same food and sleep the same room regardless of race and religion. Being given the same opportunity, the ones that strive more and show mental toughness will outshine the rest. My batch intake of 79 maintains a strong rapport to support one another and I am glad that this kind of friendship lasts forever. When we face challeng-es, we leave no man behind. The OPA has been established to maintain the ties and friendships among us for a lifetime.

Q | If there is anything RMC could do to attract more Chinese students, what in your opinion would it be?OP Chan| Promotion is very important to reach out to the people. Nowadays with all the social medias around, we could spread the ideas of “integra-tion through military life” much easier. I believe by reaching out to the Chi-nese press and media, we will be able to get words out and clear the doubts.

Q | Finally, if you could do it all over again, attending RMC and letting your sons attend RMC as you did, would you do that? OP Chan| yes. No doubt about it.

Tabik spring to the young men of OPa knights for

their audacious exploits at the assak Cricket Challenge 2017 recently! also known as sbP (se-kolah berasrama Penuh) inter-alumni Champion-ship, this annual tourna-ment, which pits alumni cricket teams from a select group of board-ing schools nationwide, reached its climax at the kinrara Oval on sun-day, 15th October 2017 with our lads emerging Champions after a 4-day long intense campaign. The knights really rocked and their success this time bears tes-timony as to the proud heritage and enduring passion for this gentleman-ly game amongst the alumni of our alma Mater. and we are quite good at it too. let this triumph be the first of many to come!

Sweet Victory and the tale of the Six GeneralS!it brought great joy to us at OPa Cricket when the knights finally lifted the coveted trophy that fine evening. Happy days are here again! but it has not always been plain sailing for the lads, far from it. With a few of them scattered in odd places, opportunities for centralised training can be scarce indeed. but it was their fierce pas-sion for the game, deep camaraderie and steely determination that made it possible at all. Thanks to OP shuhaiz-zard, their likeable Manager, it was quite amazing how they could make things click quite seamlessly and

stick it together. it is interesting to note that the nucleus of this knights Team indeed comprises the players of the Present Putra Team that played against the OPa Cricket Team at the early outset in our history, circa 2003. and to watch those young budak boys develop and mature into the champions we saw at the tournament makes one feel warm all inside. They are a proven entity and have done us proud; and should surely warrant the full support of the OPa.

Under OP Hairy, as the team man-ager for the tournament, and with OP Faris skippering the side, the knights showed great cohesiveness, applica-tion and composure throughout the tournament and they were brilliantly marshalled by coach, OP Venu ku-mar. They sailed through the group stage of the competition, winning two matches and drawing the other two due to rain interruptions. but it was in the knock-out phase when the lads unleashed their stuff and made

people take notice of them with their sharpish skills, never say die attitude and superb team work. OP Mohd Fuad, batting at 3 or 4, had a purple patch and was awarded Man of the Tournament with his runs galore, thus earning him the nickname “de bomb“ during the tournament. His spectacu-lar catch at cow’s corner in the semi-Final match against the much fancied assak Hawwin Team was the game changer; it took care of their danger-ous slogger. We won that match com-fortably by 30 runs. The Final against the raub rhinos was a closely fought affair though. batting first, we ran up a decent enough score of 136-5 in the allocated 20 overs, OP’s Fuad and rizman pacing their innings steadily. Our formidable opponents, however, gave a good account of themselves in the run chase but the knights, again, remained steadfast and gave a com-posed and measured performance in response. The lads threw their bodies in the paths of the ball to bring the

score down, some went down with cramps but fought on, and OP zha-rif’s caught and bowled dismissal of their beefy danger man early doors was a crucial wicket indeed. Tasked to bowl the last over, OP imran showed great character in steady-ing his nerves and keeping things tight. The rhinos blinked and stuttered to a final score of 130-5 as we romped home by a mere 6 runs! The OPa supporters looked on with pride as the victorious knights swaggered off with the trophy and rejoiced into the night.

Perhaps it was written in the stars. When OP nordin Manan showed up just before the Final kick off; and as all the knights lined up to shake his hand, this writ-er had a strange premonition we are going to win this. The fairy angel in charge of cricket up in the sky must have looked down and gasped, “Ooh, rMC boys!” He must have been im-pressed too? and there was this sto-ry going around that the other teams attributed the knights successful campaign and eventual victory to a groupie of “six Generals” who some-how lifted the lads’ oomph whenever they showed up. We are told that this “six” are actually senior OP’s who made a lot of racket on the boundary line. Wonder who they are?

Without divulging the identities of the “six Generals,” a brief mention of the contribution by a stalwart of OPa Cricket; a certain OP dr sarfraz, dur-ing the tournament is imperative. a thoroughly good left-arm spinner and well known in the cricketing frater-nity, OP dr sarfraz is the epitome of the team player. He was ever present throughout the tournament, urging the lads on. Come the Final match, he descended onto the field with four blind masseurs to help hone the play-ers into optimal physical and mental states for the task, all at his own ex-pense, of course. and not to mention, he took on the duty of being the wa-ter boy and going down to the Mamak shop to get packed “kopi ‘o’ panas” for the knights mid-night match dur-ing the Group stage. Wonder what

he told his wife when he got home at 4.00 that morning! Mere mortals like us can’t do it, i’m afraid.

excitement and challenGeS aheadWith this victory, we at OPa Cricket are filled with much optimism for the future under the leadership of our President, OP dato’ Musa; supported by a host of senior OP’s who live and breathe cricket. We have on board with us OP Venu kumar, our mercurial Head Coach, who plays a crucial role and has delivered big time in this Tour-nament. His astute cricket sense and insights has earned the trust and re-spect of the young knights and conse-quently boosted the lads’ game craft and confidence significantly. With the right people in place, the well-being and future prospects of OPa Cricket looks quite exciting indeed. OP Venu

could ac-tually play competitive cricket him-self should he decide to lose some 10 kg, but that is another story!

U t m o s t gratitude and appreciation to OP Tan sri kunasingam, our Patron, and his mot-ley band of cricketers for

laying the ground work which led to the formation of the OPa Cricket sec-tion that many years ago. it was a joy-ous time in our lives driven simply by the love for this beautiful game and the yearning to have fun in the sun together. indeed, the OPa is the first alumni to have its own cricket team in the country with access to cricket facilities at its alma Mater. despite his busy schedule, OP Tan sri kunas-ingam does quietly avail himself to address issues within OPa Cricket and provide useful advice and gener-ous help when the need arises, verg-ing on lavishness at times. Meanwhile, he is currently involved in efforts to build cricket facilities at the new site of the alma Mater since its relocation. Hopefully it won’t be too long before we can catch the sight of budak boys having fun with their willows in the meadows again.

so, OP’s who wish to taste the joy of hitting willow against leather and relive your youth, come and join us for nets soon. Enquiries are to be direct-ed through OP shuhaizzard , Manager of OPa knights ( +60192155078 ). should you not qualify to be a knight, we do have a Veterans side for the non-spring chicken amongst us, so no worries. live life, let us have some fun in the sun!

For those in the tech industry, oP liew Choon lian needs no introduction. Helming one of

the fastest growing technology com-panies in asia Pacific, oP liew is a clear example of a successful alumni of royal military College.

as group chairman and chief ex-ecutive officer, liew has successfully lead his company mDT innovations sdn Bhd (mDTi) to a place in history when it emerged 12th in the Deloitte’s Fast 500 asia Pacific 2011 listing, the highest ranking ever achieved by an asEan company.

Between 2006 and 2013, the com-pany won 10 asia Pacific iCT awards, including two Prime minister’s Best of the Best awards in 2007 and 2013. The company was a red Herring asia 100 award winner in 2008, and red Herring Global 100 award winner in 2009.

in 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017, the company was chosen the Best Brand asia and Best Employer awards.

mDTi was also chosen by internet of Things (ioT) Business Platform asia to be among the top 5 vendors behind microsoft, iBm, Google mDT, and Cisco in 2016.

mDTi specialises in the de-sign, research and develop-ment of ioT solutions, pro-viding software, hardware, application systems, and tech-nical services.

“ioT can be considered as one of the most important and revolutionary

technologies with the biggest market potential in this century.

“as a pioneer enabler in ioT tech-nology and system applications in this region, i have always place an importance that our corporate goal is to provide the most optimal solution in the shortest time to meet the re-quirements of our diversified customers.

“We have and will continue to actively indulge in research and development to cre-ate the next genera-tion products, to earn the t rust and

support of our customers and the market as the goals of our dedication and hard work,” explains oP liew.

The immense excitement of ioT and industry 4.0 mega trends has further put mDTi in the spotlight. mDTi’s so-lutions in crowd movement, work in

progress automation, and smart retail solutions are based on its intelligent wireless sensor sys-tems.

The excitement has defi-nitely played a crucial role in mDTi to reach where it is today. The company has been profitable since incep-

tion. mDTi has seen tremen-dous growth especially in ex-

port sales and has grossed more

than half a bil-lion dollars of accumulated export sales to date.

as of 2015, 97% of total revenues are contributed by export sales, which is an evi-dence that the company has made success-ful international presence.

Earlier this year, mDTi has also been selected to be in

Top 25 ioT companies in aPaC and in June, the company has won the Frost & sullivan ioT Company for 2018.

oP liew has also achieved out-standing achievement on his own. He was among the 13 members of the local advisory Panel to mosTi and mDEC, providing input on enhancing national iCT competitiveness. abroad, oP liew plays a vital role in major iCT events as a speaker, judge or panel member.

in 2015, oP liew was awarded the coveted Ernst & young Entrepreneur of the year in Technology Category.

“Getting this award was the most significant achievement in my life. i believe being named as the Ey En-trepreneur 2015 in Technology is the highest honor for a businessman,” ex-press liew.

a humble man, oP liew shares that he does not see himself as a very suc-cessful person but believes that he is just an ordinary person. However, it is notable that he has come a long way since he graduated royal military with

new york, san Jose and Tokyo, serv-ing corporations such as nTT, Pana-sonic, and nEC. liew was then ap-pointed as the General manager of Worldwide operation at matsushita (Panasonic) Corporation, based in Fu-jisawa.

in the early 1990s, he was among the top market analysts on a hot technology called “multimedia” with nick arnett of multimedia Corpora-tion. liew was involved in pen-based and mobile computing, working with Jeff Hawkins, Donna Dubinsky (Palm Computing) and maeda (sharp Cor-poration), and led to the success of the then Palm Pilot and zaurus.

liew also guided matsushita Dis-play monitor Division, managing Pa-nasonic display monitor businesses worldwide in asia, Europe, and amer-ica. He then brought in embedded de-sign and manufacturing technologies to malaysia, making malaysia a hub for analyses, design, sourcing, and procurement of key components of flat-panel displays, wireless commu-

to rm10 million, then from rm10 mil-lion to rm100 million. Currently, our revenues is at rm200 million and we will focus all our attention on realising this target,” he adds.

in addition to that, oP liew also aims to steer the company in becom-ing one of the top five ioT companies in the world.

“i am not motivated by big bucks and not inspired by Unicorns. But i am motivated by achieving the next target and inspired by sharing the success with all staffs and peers,” oP liew says.

speaking on sharing success with subordinates, oP liew stresses the importance of treating employees as a friend and believes that by being kind to everyone, they will return the kindness.

meanwhile when it comes to com-petitions, liew agrees that the best strategy is to have a healthy relation-ship with them.

“Despite not having any clear com-petitors in malaysia as there are no companies doing the same exact thing we do, we prefer to work and collaborate with other companies rather than see them as threats.”

That being said, oP liew hopes that the tech industry will grow in the fu-ture and it should start with an excep-tional education.

“Universities should start producing capable graduates to fill the technol-ogy gaps. Government should also play their role and should be more careful in allocating the funds to wasteful companies and should in-stead fund qualified and remarkable start-ups and companies.

“The private sector, on the other hand, should help train fresh gradu-ates rather than depending on ma-tured, seasoned candidates to fill the capable posts,” suggests oP liew on his hopes for the local tech industry.

He concludes by advising all oPs in every sectors to reach out to their seniors for assistance and guidance, especially in harvesting their experi-ences as he hints that was his strate-gies in achieving his many remarkable achievements.

top honours. oP liew completed undergradu-

ate and graduate schools in iowa and new Jersey respectively under the malaysian armed Forces scholarship. Upon graduation, he subsequently worked in manhattan for five years with Fuji-Keizai Usa.

liew became a successful industry analyst and strategic consultant in

nication technologies, and rFiD.since then, he has led mDT innova-

tions (mDTi) to over rm 1 billion in ex-ports sales.

moving forward, oP liew hopes to lead mDTi to achieve rm 1 billion in revenues.

“We hope that this goal can be achieved by 2025. in the past we have grown our revenues from rm1 million

The years spent at the royal military College has certainly shaped and molded many of

its students to become independent, highly motivated, disciplined and suc-cessful in their own rights regardless of their chosen vocation be it in mili-tary or otherwise.

one particular success story can be found in oP mohd noor hilman mohd yatim.

The son of a security guard from Terengganu, oP hilman previously worked as a marine engineer with an american company. But he quit after his mother fell sick and came home right away to take care of her. he then spent a few years doing odd jobs to support his parents and four siblings.

at the same time, oP hilman was actively exploring for a business ven-ture. like many other start-ups, oP hilman, 30, was motivated by extra

AUTHENTICALLY YOURSincome and the desire to lift the bur-den on his parents.

in 2015, he founded hilman authen-tic. This brand mainly focusing on pro-ducing height elevated shoes for men. it all started when oP hilman, himself at 173 cm, feels vertically-challenged.

he did a research and found that many men deem that being taller as a confident booster. he took the time to study the potential of producing shoes for vertically-challenged men and knew it was a good market lo-cally, and internationally.

he took the risk by using his savings to produce the shoes. For oP hilman, it was a leap of faith but he had the right mindset of what he wanted to achieve.

he started with a partner and along the way expanded to sev-en staff.

one thing that rmC

has ingrained in him is that oP hilman also relishes challenges.

“The best of being an entrepreneur is in the daily challenges that we face. every day we step into the office, we have new and exciting things to do. The daily risk we take every day may give us a very high reward.”

oP hilman is both philosophical and practical when it comes to the shoe business.

“a bag may carry your belonging, a hat may protect your head, but a good pair of shoes will carry you for-ward. a good pair of shoes brings you places.”

he was quite affectionate with shoes since he was young. having to explain to others why they should wear certain pair of shoes thus comes naturally for him.

When he first started his business, it was not exactly a

gold mine. he is acutely aware of the many competitors out there.

“We have to learn how to angle our products differently than others in the market. as of today, our performance has increased steadily.’

he claims that quitting is not in his vocabulary. Besides, oP hilman is fond of lifelong learning, a trait he also picked while studying at rmC.

he says, “Do not stop learning. Wear those shoes till it’s worn off and keep moving forward. if your pair of shoes is worn out, fix it, repair it, do whatever you can to keep wearing them till someone notice. i won’t just stop there whether i am in a success-ful or failing state. i will always look for room for improvement. Do not be lazy and keep on learning even dur-ing your free time. once you stop, your business will automatically stop as well.”

“When i founded hilman authentic, i made sure that our goals and mis-sion are unique from others. We gave a lot of attention to arts and cultural development especially within malay-sia. it is filled with diverse background and i wanted to introduce our colour-ful country to the world,” he explains.

“Building trust and relationship with my customers is a high priority. i take special care of them because they are the best marketing tool there is. With-out them, i would not be where i am today. i also like listening to my clients because they bring much greatness to the company.”

What about his winning strategies?“it is an open a secret. i have fol-

lowed many successful stories to be where i am today. i also do a lot of reading. i believe these have contrib-uted more than 70 per cent to my success.”

he adds, “When you have a prod-uct/service, you have to understand entirely what you are selling. only then you can reach your particular target market. The reason behind the product/service that you offer al-lows you to be very specific with your segmentation. Focus on them even though they may or may not be the largest contributor to your business

because word of mouth is the best marketing tool there is.”

still, his biggest challenge is in reaching out to my customers. al-though his website www.hilmanau-thentic.com by far is the best, he reck-ons it is not enough.

“i have stockists and drop shippers to help me distribute our products around the country. most of them are knowledgeable and hardworking individuals to soaring to reach their targets.” “i always go out to meet my customers and listen to their expec-tations. Customers are never wrong especially when they are very influen-tial individuals. Work hard and work smart. always keep yourself ahead of your competitors.”

most of hilman authentic’s designs now cater for men but soon it will change.

“in the near future, we will be ca-tering more for female customers as well. We have many demands in these past few months. listening to your customers pay because they know better about their needs.”

There are a few stages in his cus-tomer relations.

it begins with prioritising oP hil-man’s customers and communicating with his employees. Then sway your changes and start tracking your cus-tomers before contacting them. at the end of the day, evaluate your pro-gress and seek for improvement.

Deepest satisfaction to date?

The satisfaction of seeing custom-ers’ smile once they purchased hil-man authentic shoes always brings him joy. he resolves to do even better for his customers.

“Being able to see my custom-ers wearing my design around town. From my favourite artiste to my be-loved family, they are wearing my designs. i am truly satisfied they are enjoying the shoes they wear.”

oP hilman is also geared up for overseas expansion.

“We would like to go global mar-ket starting from asean. Then we will move foward to europe

The legacy which he wants to leave behind?

“i would like to be remembered as a person who loves his people and their diversity; someone who spreads joy and kindness. i really enjoy the colour-ful malaysian culture.”

The rV Class of 1994 – 1995 held their grand reunion at the southern Chapter of Jo-

hor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) from 15 to 17 December 2017. it was organised by a dedicated and committed team of oP Johoreans who really knew how to throw a legendary programme for all.

among the committee members were ops who are now smeCorp state Director, immigration staff, en-gineers, Financial Consultants and supported by other of oPs.

Thanks to their tireless efforts, it certainly was one of the grandest events the oPs of vintage 1994-1995 ever had.

The oPs came from far and wide, including those in Kedah, Penang, Perak. The farthest was a homecom-ing of sorts for our fellow brother who just came back from the UK. Welcome back oP nor izwan subhi!

The reunion kick-started with a wel-come dinner in a royal setting at the hrh raja zarith sofia’s library in Uni-versity Technology malaysia in skudai, Johor Bahru.

The dinner was held in one of the halls in the library, with a spread of Johorean dishes such as lontong, as-

sam pedas daun kesum, as well as many other savouries and delicacies of Johorean hospitality (sorry for the biasness as i am a Johorean myself), awaited the guests.

after having a sumptuous dinner and the first of our many bonding sessions during the three-day event (as always, it was as if we have nev-er parted ways and we just took off where we left from our last reunion in Kuantan, Pahang), we went back to our apartment-hotel rooms and refreshed ourselves and then made our way to Taman University for some “serious” reunion tea-tarik session. more bonding time!

By the way, the whole group of Budak Boys and their families bunked for two nights at the value-for-money

scholars inn located within the UTm Campus.

The next day, was one of the high-lights of the reunion as we visited the malaysian army Combat Training Centre (PUlaDa) that was estab-lished by the British after the second World War.

Visiting and honouring our military has been a custom during our previ-ous gatherings. it was no different this time around too.

PUlaDa is situated around 35-min-utes from the state capital of Johor, Johor Bahru, near a sleepy town of Ulu Tiram.

PUlaDa is a legacy of the British, constructed in the late 40's, and was the home of the British Commando regiment. The centre was once a

world recognized training centre for jungle training. it was said to be one of the best jungle survival training schools in the region as even the Us forces are also known to have trained here (sourced from wikimapia.org).

To get to PUlaDa, we took three buses from our accommodation. The 170-strong oPs and families were greeted by military escorts at the en-trance of PUlaDa. We were greeted by a sign that says:

“Kedatangan anda tidak diundang, jika tidak bersedia baik pulang”

“Your presence here is not wel-comed, if you are not prepared, go home”

Perhaps a reminder to course par-ticipants that we mean business here.

We were greeted by major saiful masri of the royal malay regiment (rmr), and staff officer 2 of Train-ing and Warrant officer i Keko of the royal rangers regiment (rrD). Both were smartly dressed in their battle fatigues and shined combat boots.

We were briefed at the lieutenant General Ungku nasiruddin hall and were given inputs on the structure of PUlaDa, training modules, the com-

position of officers and non-Com-missioned officers (nCo). after a fruitful question and answer session, came the highlight of the day (or so we thought) - the army Combat K-9 Training section.

We were given first hand exhibition and exercise showcase by the trained dogs exclusively brought from eng-land. Five dogs were given instruc-tions by their trainers and showed what they are capable of doing – a

clear sign that their trainings have been well conducted by profes-sional handlers.

Funnily, at first one of the dogs was always looking towards the oP’s chil-dren, probably excited to play catch the ball or intrigued by the presence of so many little boys and girls.

The soldiers on hand were very pro-fessional and our kids had a wonder-ful time walking through the K-9 sec-tion living quarters.

We then visited a three-building complex consisting of the museum of PUlaDa, the Weapons Gallery (a hot favourite) and the Combat model Gallery.

The oP kids were clearly excited see-ing all the displays and weapons. as a matter of fact, the writer’s daughter was totally impressed with a Combat model that comes with detailed scale of hills and roads, probably thinking those were toys rather than exercise apparatuses for combat training.

after spending close to 45-min-utes there, we were then escorted to the PUlaDa survival Village. as we walked down the humid hills of the vil-lage, we were also treated to a live ex-

ercise on handling a 1.5 metre Python.it was a thrilling display of calm-

ness by officer Captain mohd azwan, also from rmr, and his soldiers who briefed us on the handling of the ser-pents. a few of the enthusiastic sons of the oPs also showed their brav-ery in facing the phyton themselves. There was also a demonstration on how a phyton was skinned as we were given the impression that we will be having snakes as our lunch.

We then proceeded to the Briefing hut on survival skills, such as start-ing a fire, finding water in plants and roots and also building huts for safety

and finding comfort in the jungle. oP major yousrie, our Form Four newboy in 1995, was also kind enough to join us during this session.

after spending close to an hour at the survival Village, and with the heat becoming more severe and most oPs were carrying their toddlers, we were already very ready to have our lunch provided by the host.

major masri had his soldiers pre-pared us a delicious nasi Kawah, as-sam pedas (again!), ayam be-rempah, sayur lemak labu and water melons. it was perhaps the most awaited lunch for the oPs’ wives and kids with the air conditioner in full blast, and cooling iced grape cordial drinks in hand.

oP Fauzi said was invited to deliver a note of thanks on be-half of us, and also presented a memento to PUlaDa from the Class of rmC 1994-1995.

The writer also extended his appre-ciation to majors masri and yousrie as well as Captain azwan and the PU-laDa team for hosting us despite it being on a weekend.

as we bade them farewell, we also shouted out three “hip hip hooray” cheers for the PUlaDa team. The vis-it concluded at around 1400hrs.

having spent half a day in PUlaDa, we truly saw the sacrifices and dedi-cation of our Boys and Girls in uni-form. The soldiers were very knowl-edgeable, friendly and willing to assist us despite the fact that most of us were former Puteras or Budak Boys, and not commissioned officers.

To the serving men and women of the malaysian armed Forces. We hon-our and salute you!

“We sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm.” – George Or-well

“Blessed is the servant who loves his brother as much when he is sick and useless as when he is well and be of service to him. And blessed is he who loves his brother as well when he is afar off as when he is by his side,

and who would say nothing behind his back he might not, in love, say before his face.” – St. Francis of Assisi

after all the excitement, we were naturally quite exhausted, thanks to the heat and humidity of the weather on that day. We decided that it was best to take a rest in the afternoon before we head out for yet another activity that has been preparedfor us, which was the reunion Dinner on-board a Danga cruise.

The JDT organisers certainly made this reunion a grandiose affair by or-ganising a cruise for our reunion din-ner.

The 170-strong oPs and families had good fun on the cruise, singing and walking through memory lane reminiscing on the past reunions in Bukit antarabangsa in 2002, agro Park, hulu selangor in 2005, Cherat-ing in 2005, Port Dickson in 2010, and Kuantan in 2014.

soon after, the highlight of the evening was a task that all oPs had to execute. shining shoes, cooking Jet mee among others and to make it more fun, we had to do a sketch about this task!

around 2230hours, the cruise docked at Danga Bay and that was

the end of our reunion dinner on board Danga 8. it was indeed a very memorable day for us.

The next day was a sunday. With mixed feelings of happiness as well as sadness knowing that it will be the last day, we indulged ourselves with the emotionally and physically charged paintball games.

after all, it is a tradition of us oPs to shoot and be shoot at!

We played close to two hours which began at 1000hours and ended at around 1200hours. We came away laughing with aches and bruises.

soon after, the inn called us to check-out soon as it was already noon and new customers were com-ing in, which certainly showed that the scholars inn was extremely popu-lar. The service and rooms were clean and comfortable. it was indeed good value for money. Thank you UTm!

oPs began to check out around 1300hours and with hugs, handshakes as well as high fives, we said our good byes and hoped that 2020 reunion in northern part of Peninsular malaysia will be as fun and as grand as the ones in Johor Darul Ta’zim.

TaBur Hills Challenging hills located in Taman Melawati near zoo negara, known as Tabur West and Tabur East is popu-lar amongst avid hikers to catch the sunrise. it is advisable to hike during the day and make sure to bring along first-aid kit and waterproof gloves.
