Passion For Our Profession
What’s LOVE Got To Do With It!? Joquetta Johnson, Library Media Specialist MASL Afternoon Keynote Thursday, October 20, 2011
The only way to do your best work is to do what you love. #stevejobs
“…to be a passionate teacher is to be someone in love with the field of knowledge, deeply stirred by issues and ideas that challenge our world, driven to the dilemmas and potentials of the young people who come into class each day…”
Robert L. Fried The Game of School
Passion has to start with us!
Honoring passion is more than simply giving students the technology, tools, and a few books on the topics they find interesting. It is a commitment to helping students to discover for themselves – the emotional reasons linked to motivation that drive us to want to study or know something. Maiers, Angela, and Amy Sandvold. The Passion-driven Classroom: a Framework for Teaching & Learning. Larchmont, NY: Eye on Education, 2010. PDF.

A 21st Century Library is much more than Library2.0. It is the
convergence of traditional librarianship values, the coming-of-age of electronic information technologies,
the increased sophistication in the demand of services, and the
professional commitment to self-renewal with the objective of effectively meeting the
information user’s needs in the time frame, place, and format
of their choosing.

The passion for the “what” can work to our disadvantage…
Maiers, Angela, and Amy Sandvold. The Passion-driven Classroom: a Framework for Teaching & Learning. Larchmont, NY: Eye on Education, 2010. PDF.
We can have so much passion
for content [stuff] that we
forget the learner.
Weeded 300 boxes of books… I ran out of time…
…is more than a skill
or competency that can be
trained or
cultivated… Maiers, Angela, and Amy Sandvold. The Passion-driven Classroom: a Framework for Teaching & Learning. Larchmont, NY: Eye on Education, 2010. PDF.
Passion is intrinsic!

Passion learners combine fun, playfulness, and
discipline and, at the same time,
accept the necessity for endurance and perseverance.

Eliciting deep passions requires strength. It takes enormous strength and willpower to overcome obstacles, but passion give us the strength to continue forward. Maiers, Angela, and Amy Sandvold. “…endurance with an edge of obsession.”

Passionate learners not
only ask a lot of questions,
they develop a questioning disposition.
Maiers, Angela, and Amy Sandvold. The Passion-driven Classroom: a Framework for Teaching & Learning. Larchmont, NY: Eye on Education, 2010. PDF.
I believe in this. I own this… This sense of ownership becomes a responsibility – the mission to pursue excellent work.

Passion says…
Proficiency is never achieved
when you are passionate
about something. It is a lifelong
pursuit. Passion may
sleep, but it never dies.

What images and feelings are invoked when you hear the word Passion?
Is Passion driving your library media program?
Why do I need a passion driven program?
Provides Focus
Sparks Curiosity
Promotes Innovations
Supports Collaboration
Encourages Accountability
Allows Us To Be Courageous

Provides Us with Energy
Perhaps the most exciting benefit that comes from cultivating passion is the enthusiasm it generates. Passionate people inspire hope and enthusiasm… There’s an intensity, a commitment, a PASSION with which they approach their work – it’s inviting, tantalizing, alluring, and inspiring all wrapped up in the same package. Maiers, Angela, and Amy Sandvold. The Passion-driven Classroom: a Framework for Teaching & Learning. Larchmont, NY: Eye on Education, 2010. PDF.
Passion is a gift.
Have you lost the
passion for our
profession?
How can you
rekindle that
passion?
How do
you keep the
passion burning?

warm attachment, enthusiasm, or devotion

Its concepts are just a never ending story of an open book of experiences. But love does lie in one's heart, where memories are but shadows lingering in your soul. Love is giving someone the power to break your heart, but trusting them not to.

Commitment is what
Transforms the promise into reality. It is the words that speak Boldly of your intentions. And the actions which speak Louder than the words. It is making the time When there is none. Coming through time After time after time, Year after year after year. Commitment is the stuff Character is made of; The power to change The face of things. It is the daily triumph Of integrity over skepticism. When I say I love you, I mean that I'm committed to working to love you even when it's hard.

About Speak Up
With the increased variety and depth of the digital resources available for classroom use, the librarian is emerging as a critical player in enabling the use of these tools in the classroom, taking on the twin roles of cheerleader and exploration sherpa. http://www.tomorrow.org/speakup/speakup_reports.html
