Nina Tichava and Jamie Brunson dealsubtly with time and place in theirabstract works presented in the exhibitNEWNewMexico Abstraction. Tichavacombines painting and printmakingtechniques with drawing and collage inworks such as her Borrowed Landscapesseries, which is evocative of NewMexico weaving traditions but withcontemporary, contrasting imageryof natural and built environments.Brunson’s works are influenced by thesensory experiences of meditationpractice, with compositions focused oncolor, pattern, and the interplay of geo-metric forms. The reception is Friday,Aug. 25, at 5 p.m.

McLarry Fine Art, 225 Canyon Road, 505-988-1161

The title of plein-air landscape painter Peter Hagen’s exhibition Almost Not There evokes thesense one has of the world and its troubles falling away (almost) in the meditative stillnessof nature. The title also suggests nature under threat and disappearing, and his works havea slight melancholic sense of nostalgia about them. Most of Hagen’s Impressionist-inspiredpaintings are of locales in the vicinity of Santa Fe and Northern NewMexico. A former realestate agent in Colorado, he was taken by the vistas encountered while showing properties, and the experience reinvigorated an early love for painting. The show opens with a 5 p.m.reception on Friday, Aug. 25.

The gallery presents new worksby Paula Castillo and Ilene Dunnin The Night in Thirds. The exhibitopens Friday, Aug. 25, with a5 p.m. reception. Dunn’s canvasescombine painting and cementin ephemeral abstractions. “Mywork is the out-picturing of myinner process,” she writes. “Itinvolves establishing commu-nication between the layers ofouter conscious elements, andthe inner abstract conscious-ness.” Castillo’s steel sculpturesare evocative of Southwesterndesert plants and other naturalforms that translate primarily asabstractions. Castillo scavengesindustrial steel by-product anduses mild steel and wire to bringher sculptures to life in designscreated using advanced 3-Ddevelopment software.
