The Cornea
The eye's outermostlayer is the cornea, which has an importantrole in focusing yourvision by helping tofocus light that entersyour eye.
The cornea also filtersout harmful UV light andshields the eye from dirt, water, and other foreignobjects.
The cornea consistsof five different layers:

The cornea is one of the only tissues in the body that does not contain blood cells to nourish or protectitself. As a result, the cornea draws nourishment from the aqueous humor - a fluid which lies behind thecornea near the front of the eye - as well as from tears. In fact, tears not only nourish the cornea, but theyalso keep it moist, protect it from infection, and help wounds to heal!
