PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT
SUBJECT: Scissor Link Bearing Upgrade Kit
PRODUCT AFFECTED: Coal Hauler
Carrier Model Numbers: CH240C, CH220C, 200CII
Serial Numbers: ***-M067 thru ***-M113
Description: This kit replaces the scissor link center joint pin, bearings, washer and locknuts with
a heavier duty configuration. The addition of a spacer between the bearings allows the use of a
larger locknut capable of applying more force, which will hold the joint tighter and lessen the need
for adjustment or retightening.
To add the spacers necessary, a measurement must be taken from each scissor link’s bearing
spacing shoulder. Using this measurement, the final length of the spacer will be calculated during
the below procedure. The spacer provided must then be ground to the desired length, which will
determine the bearing preload applied. Please account for the final grind process of the spacers
in the scheduled downtime.
This kit is an additional upgrade over K800020. This kit contains a different, larger,
more robust locknut. The two nuts are not interchangeable.

1. Observe the following safety policies when installing this kit.
Position the struts to achieve the desired work height. Place the body on stands
and place chock blocks at the tires.
Before disconnecting any hoses or removing any hydraulic components, relieve
all hydraulic pressure from the affected system. Allow all hydraulic oil stored under pressure
to return to the hydraulic tank and install all appropriate lockouts.
2. The parts provided with this kit are identified in Figure 1 below.

The bearing cups and cones in this kit come prepackaged in pairs of one cup
057277 and one cone 057278 as 226357 BEARING ASSYs. Each has a dimension written on
a tag and attached. See Figure 2 below. This dimension is the Cone Face Offset for that
individual set of cup and cone, and will be used along with the scissor link shoulder
measurement to determine the spacer’s desired final ground length.
Each set of cup and cone must remain paired together during assembly or the
preload on the bearings will not be correct.

3. Loosen the top & bottom scissor link joints. Reference Kress Service Manual for complete
disassembly instructions.
4. Disassemble the current center pin arrangement on the truck. Pin, bearings, nut(s) and washer
can be discarded. Reference Kress Service Manual for complete disassembly instructions.
This kit supplies new bearing cups and cones. If the currently installed bearings
are to be reused, or if new bearings from customer stock are used, they must be measured for
Cone Face Offset which has already been done with the kit-supplied bearings. Contact Kress
Product Manager – Mining for the Cone Face Offset measuring procedure if other bearings are
to be used instead of the supplied set.
5. Measure the machined shoulder width of both upper and lower scissor links as shown in Figure
3 below. For reference - “DIM A” would be the measurement of the lower link (Link A) and
“DIM B” would be the measurement of the upper link (Link B).
The shoulder should measure between .490” and .510”. Shoulder measurement
must be accurate to +/- .001”.

6. Select two 226357 BEARING ASSYs to use in the lower link (Link A) and two to use in the
upper link (Link B). It does not matter what order they are installed in each link, but it is
important that they are specific to either the upper or lower link.
7. Add “DIM A” and the Cone Face Offsets of the two 226357 BEARING ASSYs that will be
installed in Link A. Subtract .0025” from that total to get “Length A”, or the final ground
length of the spacer that will be installed in Link A. Note: Subtracting .0025” obtains the
proper preload on the bearings. See Figure 4 below for the arrangement of the spacers between
the bearings for each link.
Example:
DIM A = .506”, Cone Face Offsets of two 226357 BEARING ASSYs are .0685” & .0680
.506” + .0685” + .0680” = .6425
Length A = .6425” - .0025”
Length A = .6400” +/-.0005”
8. Repeat Step 6 for Link B to arrive at the final ground length of the spacer that will be installed
in Link B, or “Length B”. See Figure 4 below for the arrangement of the spacers between the
bearings for each link.
9. Have 226358 SPACERs ground to Length A and Length B.
The spacers must be ground within a tolerance of +/-.0005”.
10. Reassemble components as shown in Figure 4 below. Ensure ground spacers are assembled
into the appropriate link. NOTE: The washer included with nut 226348 does not get used.
Please discard. Use only tanged washer 226356. Refer to Kress Service Manual for
remaining assembly instructions.

11. Bearing Locknut 226348 Installation Procedure:
A. Thread nut onto pin until snug enough to have pulled the seal halves in the middle together.
B. Rotate the pin 3X and check it is still snug, repeat until maintained
C. Lube each screw with the supplied Superbolt lubricant.
D. Using the star torque pattern shown below, torque each of the 5/16 jackscrews to 6 ft-lbs.
E. Rotate the pin 3X.
F. Using the star torque pattern shown below, torque each jackscrew to 29 ft-lb.
G. Rotate the pin 3X.
H. Using a circular pattern, torque each jackscrew to 44 ft-lb.
I. Rotate the pin 3X.
